he is a tory,
he is not even labour

whether he and his wife are rich should not matter

"He's not even labour"
Do you think Labour MPs and they families lifestyles reflect those that they (used to( represent? Do you think they live on council estates and send there kids to the local sink comprehensive with holes in their shoes? Of course they don't!!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/04/2022 18:02

obviously not @Georgeskitchen
but i think this is how labour voters preferred it

OP - your ignorance is showing.

Keir Starmer did not go to public school. The fact that you're pretending he did is ridiculous.

TinaWeymouthsBass · 03/04/2022 18:03

@MrsLargeEmbodied
Grammar schools used to be state run not public, you had to sit an eleven plus exam and attain a certain grade to be accepted they had very little to do with class they were about intelligence and attainment for whoever could make the grade from whatever background.
There are a few grammars like that now but most have become privateish fee paying schools.

The school that Starmer went to was state run when he got his place but became private when he was in his final year but because he was already a student didn't have to pay fees.

@abc4321

Personally, I see being financially successful as an asset for anyone involved in overseeing the country's finances.

Though I'm not especially interested in how his wife did or didn't make her fortune.

She inherited it. Not sure that qualifies her or him for anything. I guess she was "successful" to managing to be conceived in the right womb to be wealthy.
Octomore · 03/04/2022 18:07

The kind of school that is considered to be "private" (or "public schools") are the kind you have to pay for

This shouldn't need stating.

LolaLouLou · 03/04/2022 18:09

@deedeemegadoodoo

Why would a man from one of the richest families in the world want to do a job (MP, Cabinet Member etc) that pays a salary that is chicken feed to him?
This. I just don't "get" him and his motivations.
DoubleShotEspresso · 03/04/2022 18:10

OP your post doesn't make much sense.
But of course it matters.
His wife and her income/insane wealth is of course relevant whilst he's directly placing huge chunks of the population into not just abject poverty but the need to choose between heating snd eating.
He's got zero grasp of what the majority of us face in the coming months and clearly doesn't give a toss either- sods off to California for Easter while many he's supposedly serving are at food banks and freezing. He and his wife are a disgrace to humanity.

SierpinskiSquare · 03/04/2022 18:12

Sunak finally lost me when with the way he dealt with the millions of people who fell through the cracks when it came to Furlough. He was so pompous and heartless about it. He wanted all the glory of 'No one will be left behind' then promptly left millions destitute. He is uncaring and he is a hypocrite.
The fact he is wealthy and his wife even wealthier is neither here nor there. I don't care if he can actually relate to extreme poverty but I do care that he is a liar and a hypocrite.
I don't think you have to actually fully understand someone else's misfortune to be able to show compassion and understanding.

Rishis always seems to be engineering publicity shots and it makes him look ridiculous - he is so vain and silly! TBF if he was otherwise competent I wouldn't care but alongside the knowledge of what he is really like the photo shoots look especially ridiculous.

Michellexxx · 03/04/2022 18:12

If the genders were swapped here, and it was his wife working as an mp and him the offsprings of v v wealthy family, I really think the discourse around this would be different. People would admire her for choosing to work for so ‘little’

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 03/04/2022 18:12

It's not just about them being out of touch.

There is a serious conflict of interest issue.

Whilst various measures have been enacted over a number of years, including on Sunak's watch by HMRC to destroy the ability of individuals to be freelance contractors, jobs have been exported to tech companies such as Infosys (which Rishi's wife's Dad founded).

We are not talking about his decision to work though. The problem is his ability to do a good job.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/04/2022 18:16

agree with the publicity shots
they do not do him any favours

OP posts:

bit like the mp who gave his children a burger in the mad cow disease era

@PastMyBestBeforeDate

Isn't it the fact he's trying to look as if he cares about the average person when he hasn't got a clue? If the Queen tried to pretend she understands Elsie's struggle to heat her flat then she'd get stick too.
But should that stop him doing his job and trying?

He is an intelligent man. Money and coming from a certain background doesn't mean you are incapable of finding out about others' lives and wanting to help run your country balancing all the various needs of people, finances, the future, current situations etc.

Many of us are in jobs helping or serving people who we cannot fully empathise with.

PaterPower · 03/04/2022 18:22

The Golf that Sunak was (possibly for the first time and with a photographer conveniently to hand) filling up himself is the cheapest of three cars that he / the family own. The other two are much higher end motors which are kept at his out of London homes.

He and his wife deserve the scrutiny because:

A) She clearly can influence her family firm’s investments as they are now scaling back in Russia, following the criticism

B) Sunak has had ample opportunities to redress the gap between the richest and poorest, even prior to Covid and the Ukrainian war, but has maintained policies which have kept it widening. Capital Gains Tax is still taken at a far lower % than the highest income tax bands - this directly benefits his wife and himself.

C) As previous PPs have already pointed out, he’s presided over covid ‘support’ policies which were (deliberately?) open to manipulation and fraud, particularly by the already rich. He shows no appetite for hunting down and reclaiming any of our cash that was thrown away.

The UK press have done a far more effective job of shaming the wealthy into giving back money they had no need (but the legal right) to claim than he / his department has.

This. He had a totally incorrect understanding of who many of these people were and how much they actually earned. Those endless sickening sound bites about leaving no one behind while in reality 3 million people were left on the scrap heap.
LenaLena10 · 03/04/2022 18:23

@1forAll74

He won't have to worry about the gas bill at the moment, I think I read that he and family have gone to their holiday home In California for Easter.
Certainly not worrying about any bills at home, too busy building a swimming pool, gym and tennis court onto his mansion. How can he empathise with not having enough money to heat a home.

Levelling up....I really wish we were in it together...

Any politicians or their relatives in Europe and America who have accepted large quantities of Russian money deserve to be under scrutiny right now.

(Also, anyone who came up with ‘eat out to help out’ in the middle of a pandemic should perhaps not be in charge of anything too complicated
*
^*

This with bells on.

Imagine the hypocrisy of a government that refused to feed hungry school kids while at the same time giving those people who could afford to eat out buy one get one free. Says it all really.

PegasusReturns · 03/04/2022 18:29

out of touch with reality?
do you know how much these politicians earn?
even Kier Starmer earns a good sum

His wife is worth £430m, to put that in perspective you’d have to earn and save every penny of an MPs salary for 5,000 years to have her fortune. It’s incomparable.

Shinyandnew1 · 03/04/2022 18:30

a grammar school? isn't that public?
