Is DH BIU- to talk with DSIL about planned baby name

fringely · 26/03/2022 10:40

DSIL is 34 weeks pregnant with first DC.
A few weeks ago her and her DP announced the planned baby name.
The actual 'sound' of the name is fine, but it is heavily associated with something which DSIL and her DP were not really aware of. They have been made aware of the association since (as it's pretty common knowledge- not sure how they hadn't heard of it tbh!) but are of the opinion most people won't make the association. DH and I are of the other opinion that most people will definitely make the association, it's not a good association, and genuinely worry that it's not fair to give a baby that name and it's fully possible it could lead to bullying when older.

Whilst DP and strongly agree on the huge issue with the name and agree it's unfair to lumbar a baby with it, I don't think DH should say anything. DH thinks he should have a proper talk with her about his concerns on the name and why he doesn't think it's fair to give to a DN. I think nothing good will come and we should stay quiet.

(So far we have said very little about it. We were notably shocked when told what it was, and clarified 'X' as in X'?? But other than that have nodded and smiled).

It’s Lucifer isn’t it!

It’s Lucifer isn’t it!
No.
Chocolatehamper · 27/03/2022 20:48

@SeaToSki

Well if they go ahead with Genghis, hopefully it gets shortened to something innocuous like Gus.

Maybe they could use something bland for a middle name, then the poor boy can alway just use that.

What works as a middle name for Genghis though..?

Khan

No, keep guessing 😂

I actually like this one too!

Ok so the name is Genghis…. I’m really confused why that would be bad?
Maybe my history isn’t strong.. but I don’t remember Genghis Khan being depicted as Adolf Hitler bad?
What am I missing? 🫤

GettingItOutThere · 27/03/2022 20:55

@fringely

Ok I'm kinda done here. The name is Genghis.
jesus christ hahah
Lochroy · 27/03/2022 20:57

@MurderAtTheBeautyPageant

Apparently 1 in 300 of us, or something like that, are descended from Genghis Khan so if questioned they can just say 'old family name'.

Some people have never heard of Google.

What a ridiculous name to saddle a child with. I can see decades of bullying in the life of this child which will carry on into adulthood. Parents are thoughtless.

supersop60 · 27/03/2022 21:11

Poor little niece.

"The name Genghis is a boy's name meaning "universal ruler". "

From Google,

Why is that a bad name ?

Hawkins001 · 27/03/2022 21:12

Besides, if he due to wars, then theirs Alexander the great, attlia the hun ect

Hawkins001 · 27/03/2022 21:13

*it's

Panda368 · 27/03/2022 21:21

If you really want to discourage them there is a history podcast called Wrath of the Khans by Dan Carlin.

Gengis Kahn is possibly one of the greatest mass murderers/rapists in history. Responsible for horrific atrocities against a huge number of different peoples he just didn’t quite make it to Europe so our own European cultural awareness is pretty low where he is concerned.

Merryhobnobs · 27/03/2022 21:24

Seriously?!!! Are they bonkers!!

Winecrispschocolatecats · 27/03/2022 21:25

Crikey. That guy wiped out over 10% of the global population and your DSIL wants to name her kid after him? Are you sure they're not just pulling your leg??
If in the UK, we don't have many restrictions on baby names, but there are exceptional circumstances whereby parents may not be allowed to register a name if it is deemed offensive or likely to 'cause harm' to the child. I'd really hope that friends and family (not just your DH) try to talk them out of it!

Thinkingannie · 27/03/2022 21:33

Is it Jezebel? If it is it does have connotations but is also lovely and unusual x

Poptasmagorical · 27/03/2022 21:38

I remember a post about a baby name dispute over Oedipus. My guess is that's what this name is too.
And they really don't want to be calling their baby Oedipus.

Poptasmagorical · 27/03/2022 21:39

Oh, I filtered by poster and it didn't show me the three most recent posts by op! So it's Ghengis. Where did they even get the name of not from the Ghengis?!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 27/03/2022 21:45

Is it Olivia?

Some people shouldn't be allowed to be parents.

I actually know of a child called lucifer. Poor thing!

Whatinthelord · 27/03/2022 21:48

I don’t mind Gengis. I wouldn’t choose it but it is an actual name at least.

Obviously I would think “Khan” straight away, but I don’t think it’s horrendous.

Medusa

greenlynx · 27/03/2022 21:49

It’s a strange choice. Does it have cultural meaning for them or is it a family name? I wouldn’t think badly about a kid named Ghengis despite knowing about Ghengis Khan. My first thought would be : where his parents are from? And the second: oh gosh how to pronounce it correctly. I think they will struggle with his short name and it’s too complicated for nursery/ primary school and so on. And it doesn’t sound good tbh. So I would approach it from these angles.
I would tell my sibling openly my opinion but I wouldn’t go into a long heated discussion.
