MIL in a strop

Partners family came round today and we're all over my 4 month old boy, which is lovely to see! However.. his dummy fell on the floor and my MIL picked the dummy up and put it in her mouth to "clean" it! I was horrified, i took the it off her before she put it back in my sons mouth. She was offended by this and said I was being too precious, AIBU? I'm fuming in all honesty

@xxlockdownbabyxx omg you are not being unreasonable at all, that is rank sorry 😂

duvetdayforeveryone · 20/03/2022 18:49

YANBU! That is nasty!!!

Wedonttalkaboutboris · 20/03/2022 18:50

My mil used to do this and it made me Envy so gross!

Imissmoominmama · 20/03/2022 18:51

It used to be common practice. She was probably embarrassed.

gamerchick · 20/03/2022 18:52

Yeah it is rank but it was done in the past and some parents still do it. It's not something to get in a twist about. Unless she's full of illness/herpes. Just tell her you don't want her to do that.

DontLookBackInAnger1 · 20/03/2022 18:52

YANBU

Anyone who thinks their mouth is clean is a bit thick

Marinerscove · 20/03/2022 18:52

Oh- that’s interesting to know!

DuckyNoMates · 20/03/2022 18:53

She was offended by this and said I was being too precious, AIBU? no, it's your child. Plus its grim.

Marinerscove · 20/03/2022 18:54

@Imissmoominmama

It used to be common practice. She was probably embarrassed.
Oh that’s interesting! I didn’t know!
Fernsinthegarden · 20/03/2022 18:55

I’d probably be put out about her putting it in her mouth but my 4mo was starting to put all sorts of grubbiness in her mouth at this point so I’d not be overly miffed but just brush it over it and move the conversation along next time ‘oops, thank you, I’ve got another dummy here anyway that one needed a wash anyway!’

Marinerscove · 20/03/2022 18:55

Sorry for my random ‘it’s interesting to know’ I was trying to reply to a comment about the fact it used to be common practice! 🤦‍♀️

HellToTheNope · 20/03/2022 18:55

That's absolutely disgusting. 🤮

NorthSouthcatlady · 20/03/2022 18:57

Grim!

Pinkflipflop85 · 20/03/2022 19:03

The poor woman probably just did it on autopilot!

Moody123 · 20/03/2022 19:04

It is a very old thing to do however most of my family do it with nieces and nephews ... I don't like it and wouldn't do For a young baby, however my DS put everything in his mouth at around 6 months old...

beetuljoos · 20/03/2022 19:07

Everyone does that around here, it would probably be instinctual for her rather than something done maliciously. Yes it seems silly when you think about it but it's one of those things you do almost subconsciously. I don't/didn't do it, before anyone jumps on me, but I can totally see how you might when it's very common or perhaps was when you were raising children.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 20/03/2022 19:17

I used to do it. Never with someone else's DC though.

Porcupineintherough · 20/03/2022 19:20

Fuming? I wouldnt love it but she hardly put it in the dog's mouth. Sounds like you both need to calm the fuck down.

Thehop · 20/03/2022 19:21

There are more germs in your mouth than your anus.

Tel her not to do it again the dirty cow

Freddiefox · 20/03/2022 19:22

I do t think you need to be fuming, just tell her calmly it’s not what you do.

It’s not the best thing, but not the worst either. Just communicate with her.

xxlockdownbabyxx · 20/03/2022 19:22

Thanks all! I'm not fuming that she did it, honest mistake and I get that it can be instinctual. I'm more annoyed at the fact she said I was being precious! I wasn't rude and I didn't try shame her, I just said l oh don't worry I have another dummy here.

Porcupineintherough · 20/03/2022 19:23

@Thehop if you mean bacteria then yes that's true, but it's the ones in your anus that are most likely to make you dick. Humans are basically one big bag of bacteria, they're largely benevolent.

Porcupineintherough · 20/03/2022 19:23

sick

xxlockdownbabyxx · 20/03/2022 19:23

Yes I'm annoyed that she told me I was being precious
