If you have a mantlepiece what do you have on it?

I'm looking for ideas here because I have no imagination whatsoever when it comes to decorating my home!

I have quite a minimalist lounge as I'm not over keen on ornaments/knick knacks really and I hate dusting but I have a plain, bare mantlepiece and I'm looking for ideas for what to put on it?

I'm thinking of a few candles but what do you all have on yours? Any ideas appreciated and photos would be a bonus Grin

Candles, bottle of matches, photographs, invitations

StoneofDestiny · 11/03/2022 15:24

In my last home I had a very ornate French marble fireplace - had two large pewter candlesticks , 4 old silver photograph frames and a lovely antique clock. Used to love decorating it at Christmas.

Now I just have a wood burner with no surround.

Cocolapew · 11/03/2022 15:26

@PumpernickleSoup, B &M they are cluster lights.

Susu49 · 11/03/2022 15:52

@luxxlisbon

Nothing, very occasionally a vase of flowers though.
Same here. Can't stand clutter and don't go in for decorative bits coz it's just more to dust!
Doratheexploret · 11/03/2022 16:01

A clock and two wooden pears.

WorraLiberty · 11/03/2022 16:11

@InsufficientOven

This is mine, I want to declutter the bottom but I also don't know what to do with it all...
@InsufficientOven I love your fire. I have the same in gold but it's looking tired and old and doesn't even work properly Blush

You've just inspired me to paint it black!

Thank you @Cocolapew , they are beautiful!

I used to be minimalist but I now have things that people have bought so I like them out to remind me. The metal figures are dh's. DH actually made the mirror and the fireplace. All three sides of the fireplace open to reveal some of his 1000 plus CDs.
My DD always says that nothing matches in our room, it doesn't but I like it and that's what matters.

Small clock, picture of DD, small ceramic bowl filled with chocolate and a tiny teddy

Dustyroad63 · 11/03/2022 16:48

Just bought a lovely new mirror from Dunelm so rearranged it yesterday.
I always like a green plant on the mantlepiece.

This is mine, if I can post it successfully. There's dust along with the 'pretty' stuff. The china I've had for decades, the fabric tulips are home made, the clock was a free gift from Damart because I'm an old fogey who likes thermal layers. Not to everyone's taste but I like it.

@Ffsmakeitstop I love that mirror, so unusual!

Vases, tchotchkes, children’s art, whatever crap DP has put on there today in defiance of my need to vignette

4 x Framed photos, 3 x Willow Tree ornaments, 2 x candles.
It's a very large piece of wood above a wood burner, and very high ceilings so can take a lot of stuff.

woodhill · 11/03/2022 18:01

I have a clock and candles, sometimes flowers

Fernandina · 11/03/2022 18:04

A large black stone like an obelisk with white lines running through it.

A small black & white landscape painting.

And, for no good reason I can think of, a limpet shell.

Thank you he got the idea from a bloke in Cornwall. We live in West Yorkshire so it doesn't really go but then it's definitely not a show home.

I have a painted wall (feature) on chimney breast, so no pictures hanging over - literally nothing on the chimney breast itself. . That helps with non fussy look. On my mantle itself I have 3 items- a large handmade glass dish that is upright , it has etched decorations but you can see the paint colour through it. I think it would work similarly with a say A4 or A3 size painting- but I like how I can see the colour through it. . Then I have 2 small items, very small including a clock that is very decorative but not fussy.

anyoldname76 · 11/03/2022 18:18

Usually it's just got a lantern, artificial plant and a little wooden ornament my DH carved on it. At the moment it's also got a half eaten box of maltesers, open pack of custard creams, half a pack of prawn crackers and a tub of fish food on it Hmm

supperlover · 11/03/2022 18:28

Here's mine

A nutcracker, an ornament of Santa that has a real street lamp that really lights up, an ornament of St Basil's Cathedral, a Slovakia flag, a woodwork cat with some broken spectacles, a London phonebox (not full size) and a bag of dog treats.

MadKittenWoman · 11/03/2022 21:27

Candles, clocks, plants, ornaments, cards.

tunainatin · 11/03/2022 21:31

Currently an orchid in a a pot, small bunch of lilies in a mug, and a decorative ceramic tile.

Kittykatmacbill · 11/03/2022 22:48

Sitting room - our framed invite framed, a year of the monkey paper cut from China, a candle in a green jar, an embroidery I finished over year ago and can’t quite decide where to put up and in price of place, dh’s pride and joy a Lego Apollo Luna lander…

Dinning room - very anti mumsnet but my bday cards, a model car from a childrens storybook, and a vase filled with tasteful (ish) dried leaves, sometimes an orchid but not now!
