If you have a mantlepiece what do you have on it?

I'm looking for ideas here because I have no imagination whatsoever when it comes to decorating my home!

I have quite a minimalist lounge as I'm not over keen on ornaments/knick knacks really and I hate dusting but I have a plain, bare mantlepiece and I'm looking for ideas for what to put on it?

I'm thinking of a few candles but what do you all have on yours? Any ideas appreciated and photos would be a bonus Grin

A huge gilt mirror, two tall cast iron churh candlesticks (all ebay buys) and a small picture of traditional variations in Welsh national costume. I do vary the picture from time to time as we have more than we have on the walls at any given time. One of the candlesticks has a light up letter C dangling from the bottom - left over from Christmas when one of the DC got it as a secret santa present and insisted it belonged with my (otherwise very tasteful!) display of ivy, fairy lights and gold pine needles.

The room has a 10ft ceiling so what ever is on there has to have some height.

I really recommend looking at ebay for candlesticks - there are some really beautiful vintage ones and often cost a lot less than nice new ones.

Clock, candle, 3 owl ornaments, photo of my old cat, big pile of coins from DH's pocket.

I have seasonal spring decor-a bird,a pair of bunnies and some decorative wooden tulips. I like to change it out for holidays/season.

A print of The Great Wave of Kanagawa propped up, several nail varnishes and an emery board and a cat laser pen, lol

A collection of art nouveau brass and copperware and plants. Above it is a gilt mirror.

A plant, a succulent, a bowl of loose change, a candle and marches and a fossil Ichthyosaur bone.

Mine has a liberal coating of wax, I always manage to spill the wax melts.
A nice old ticking clock, photo of grandchildren and a vase of daffodils Daffodil

Living room - clock, two bird ornaments each end. I'm militant about it not becoming a dumping ground for random shite so like to keep it clear.

The one in my bedroom - tons of photos some in frames, some not, initial things the kids made, couple of pottery things the kids have made. It's a mess!

Cat ornament and two tealight holders that were a birthday present.

Statue of the Buddha (Thai style), two plants. Fireplace is original Victorian with gorgeous tiling - anything more than that would be too much. When the plants die they won't be replaced, but they seem to be extraordinarily hardy beings.

I have two mantelpieces in my knocked through Victorian terrace. I have postcards, photographs, a beautiful pottery bowl, a Georgian silver cruet set, a small statue and a dandelion head paperweight!

Just one candle at the moment. It gets cluttered around occasions and between Christmas and Easter I like to keep it bare aside from all the dust and occasional cat. It's quite an ornate fireplace anyway so there's nearly too much visual interest there at the best of times.

This is mine, I want to declutter the bottom but I also don't know what to do with it all...

Hallowbat · 11/03/2022 13:30

A wooden bowel & two slices of tree trunk all with battery tea lights so it glows nicely in the evening

balalake · 11/03/2022 13:40

A small clock, some pottery which has sentimental value, and a photo frame.

notacooldad · 11/03/2022 13:43

On one mantle piece I have two small clay things that I made and glazed together and also a small single stem vase with a piece of bamboo. On my mantle piece in the front room I have a small trinket box and at the other side a pair of candle sticks that were made for me.

A letter from ds1's school about headline doing the rounds, a small plastic nit comb, some vicks, 3 flamingo tealights, fabric samples and a 10 pound winner scratchcard. I should probably sort it out.
