If you have a mantlepiece what do you have on it?

I'm looking for ideas here because I have no imagination whatsoever when it comes to decorating my home!

I have quite a minimalist lounge as I'm not over keen on ornaments/knick knacks really and I hate dusting but I have a plain, bare mantlepiece and I'm looking for ideas for what to put on it?

I'm thinking of a few candles but what do you all have on yours? Any ideas appreciated and photos would be a bonus Grin

I change mine depending on the season BlushGrin
At the moment I only have lights because I have a 10 week puppy who likes to pull them and I didn't want anything breaking.

Some vintage candlesticks I got from a charity shop. And then a can of deodorant and an empty coffee mug DH has dumped on there.

NorthernSoul55 · 10/03/2022 23:42

A bunch of tulips, a couple of small plants, a clock, a wax burner...... And a thermometer for the endless rows about the central heating, a Christmas gift bag with a chocolate bunny in it (dgd's), my hairbrush, a letter from HMRC, earphones, theatre tickets, dog treats, £8 in £2 coins, 2 birthday cards and OHs phone.
Oddly, there is only fruit in my fruitbowl

WorraLiberty · 10/03/2022 23:48

@NewYearEveryYear I love the boat!

@Cocolapew I hadn't considered lights. I might look into that, thanks!

Also loving the random things like the Fox's Glacier Mint, German Christmas house and empty can of deodorant 😂😂

From left to right :

  • a sort of ornamental candlestick
  • a wooden autonotam model of an accordion player (Timberkits)
  • a flowering cactus
  • a pottery statue of a naked lady which is an original bought from an artist in Dinan 20+ years ago and is IMO quite beautiful
  • a clock
  • a small glass turtle
  • another Timberkits wooden automaton, this one a guitar player
  • yet another Timberkits model, this one of Stevenson's Rocket
  • a little statue of a woman holding some flowers.

Occasionally there will be theatre tickets or similar stuck behind the other stuff so we know where it is

Mines decorated for spring/Easter. Blush Normally only the painting, the sign and mirror and actually a few other bits are up there.

An 'Admiral's Hat' clock in the centre, glass candlestick holders and candles at end sides, photos of daughters, gifts from daughters which are ornaments of an elephant and a dog.

JaceLancs · 11/03/2022 01:48

Green glass and portmeirion pottery

Some blue and purple Caithness glass paperweights, some small purple glass vases and candle votives, a small glass otter and a carriage clock.

Notarealmum · 11/03/2022 07:14

Clock in the centre, antique candlesticks each end, framed photos between. Oh and, like other pp, a large mirror on the wall.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 11/03/2022 07:16

A 1950s clock, two brown ceramic squirrels (one on each end) and two candles.

FantasticFebruary · 11/03/2022 07:26

I don't have one but if I did, it would have a minimal number of tasteful things and no crap. In my dreams anyway!! & given the state of the economy & the price of houses haven risen hugely around here, that's where it's likely to stay!!

FourChimneys · 11/03/2022 07:28

Plants, photos, a nice pot with random bits and bobs inside, a few books and currently a couple of thank you cards.

SilverGlassHare · 11/03/2022 07:29

A painting of somewhere close to our home on the chimney breast, then white and turquoise raku, and some turquoise/green glass. It’s maximalist really, probably have a bit too much on there!

Reluctantadult · 11/03/2022 07:32

A large plain mirror in the middle that's sitting on the mantle itself and leaning against the wall, nursery photo of the kids on the left, Maori carving of kind of a naked man on the right that we got when we travelled to New Zealand where my dad lives.

Stillgoings · 11/03/2022 07:32

An old gold clock with embroidery face, two cute photos of the kids, a ceramic jug full of daffodils and a matching green sylvac rabbit.

00100001 · 11/03/2022 08:00

It's essentially a bookshelf

OlafLovesAnna · 11/03/2022 08:02

Nothing on my mantelpiece at all. I have a big colourf picture over it, then flowers in a jug and a terracotta armadillo and a candle on the hearthstone to the side on the fire.

ghostmouse · 11/03/2022 08:03

Candles and a photo of me and dh.

Lots of dust…

Feralcrossmersea · 11/03/2022 08:09

Hard to describe...

If you have a mantlepiece what do you have on it?
LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 11/03/2022 08:11

Picture was a 50th birthday prezzie from my sisters, painted by an artist friend. Wedding photo, lovely bowl gift from daughter, and my mum’s christening silver at the moment. I often change things around but the picture dominates.

(The picture frame is wonky, the left is 1cm longer than the right, and I’m too mean to get it fixed).

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 11/03/2022 08:12

Ginger vase, photos in sliver frames, clock.
100 year old house.

GeneLovesJezebel · 11/03/2022 08:13

Fairy lights, clock, pictures.
