To wonder if the government have started any planning on what if a nuclear weapon hit britain

Even in the current climate, I don’t actually believe that a nuclear bomb will be hitting the UK.

But I wondered if the government have prepared for the eventuality.

I heard that in the 70s/80s there were loads of leaflets and adverts of what we should do if we were attacked.

In other countries they have bomb shelters and sirens.

I wouldn’t have a clue what to do. The only thing I do know is that I would want to be with my family when it happened.

Anyone one else wonder about this?

The government have got a bomb shelter for themselves. I don’t think they give a flying fig what happens to anyone else. But I could be wrong.

AlternativePerspective · 05/03/2022 22:23

Well, in the event of a nuclear attack you should adopt the brace position:

Lean forward, put your head between your legs and kiss your arse goodbye.

We'll be left to barbecue I'm afraid.

SalsaLove · 05/03/2022 22:23

We’d be fucked. There’s no where to go for any of us.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 05/03/2022 22:24

Of course they haven't. This shower couldn't plan their way out of a paper bag.

BrilloSolar · 05/03/2022 22:25

I'm sure there is some sort of plan, although didn't they cancel or the PM not turn up to the last pandemic planning meeting before Covid - sure I read that at the time.

But realistically, what can you do? London - get down into the underground? I don't know if that's far enough down, and if it is, come up to what?

So I'd say it's probably the easiest plan / quickest meeting - "We'd all be fucked" end of meeting.

It'd be more useful if they have a plan for cyber attacks, running out of fuel, Eastern half of Europe becoming homeless, food shortages. But based on how they managed Covid, I wouldn't hold my breath!

Simonjt · 05/03/2022 22:26

Probably not, we couldn’t even cope with a bit of wind a couple of weeks ago.

RicherThanYew · 05/03/2022 22:26

I've got several pop up Wendy houses that you're all welcome to join me in. I've got ingredients to make a nice victoria sponge as a sort of farewell cake too, I could whip one up before the mushroom cloud engulfs us right?

LaurieFairyCake · 05/03/2022 22:26

Since Priti Fucking Patel is managing to avoid welcoming any Ukrainians to asylum here like EVERY OTHER country in Europe is doing I'm not holding out any hope they're managing any sort of piss up in brewery

Feedmepancakes · 05/03/2022 22:26

Our government really don't give a fuck what happens to us.

I'm quite sure there will be a bunker somewhere for themselves though.

FlibbertyGiblets · 05/03/2022 22:26

Iirc we duck and cover. Under a table or pop a door off hinges and hold it over you. Just like that.
Wrap bodies up and place them outside, bury if possible.
Brush off any flakes that land on us before re-entering our homes.

But the advice might have changed since I were a nipper.

Think cheery thoughts, people.

@Simonjt lovely to see you here! I name change all the time, but just love seeing your comments!

I was told recently there is a bomb shelter under our County's County Hall.
For the planners if there is to be a nuclear bomb!

Made me wonder if other County Halls have the same thing, all for themselves!

Gotajobthrunepotism · 05/03/2022 22:28

@FlibbertyGiblets. That’s pretty much all I remember. I think I got my knowledge from watching threads

How could they top Protect and Survive? I bet they gave up trying.

Gotajobthrunepotism · 05/03/2022 22:29

There is an old bunker a few miles from me. Mind you, I didn’t even want to go on a tour of it as I have claustrophobic

Yes, the Government have an underground bunker so does the Queen, but I think if they suddenly started delivering leaflets there would be mass panic, and with nuclear weapons of today there wouldn't be any point.

joangray38 · 05/03/2022 22:31

Vaguely remember going to the local leisure centre in the late 70s to practice what we should do if a nuclear attack was triggered as it could be completely be closed off. Pity it was knocked down a few years ago.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 05/03/2022 22:31

You have to remain inside for as long as possible - preferably a couple of weeks - then the worst of the fallout risk will have dropped. After that you'll have to stop your neighbours from attacking you to steal your pasta and toilet rolls.

Hoardasurass · 05/03/2022 22:33

All the leaflets and videos of what to do in the event of nuclear war were bs that was meant to make people feel better.
The fact is people know far to much about nukes to believe that painting your windows white or building a shelter with your internal doors against a brick wall (actual advice from the government) would do Jack shit to protect you.
The simple fact is that in the event of a nuclear war everyone will die its only a question of how quickly.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 05/03/2022 22:34

Seriously. There is no point to a plan

Thurlow · 05/03/2022 22:34

Of course they have a plan. They have places to survive in.

Us however? We'll die. Well people in and around London would. Dunno what other places they'd target.

EffOrfagain · 05/03/2022 22:36

They have their bunker and they will probably send us a text.

TimeForTeaAndG · 05/03/2022 22:36

The best thing you could do is get as close to the target site as possible and get wiped out cos noone wants to be around during the fallout and subsequent slow death.
