To wonder if the government have started any planning on what if a nuclear weapon hit britain

Even in the current climate, I don’t actually believe that a nuclear bomb will be hitting the UK.

But I wondered if the government have prepared for the eventuality.

I heard that in the 70s/80s there were loads of leaflets and adverts of what we should do if we were attacked.

In other countries they have bomb shelters and sirens.

I wouldn’t have a clue what to do. The only thing I do know is that I would want to be with my family when it happened.

Anyone one else wonder about this?

I live near salt mines wouldn't know if they will save us.
Rather go in one go with my family than suffer for weeks/months/years of slowly dying.

ProfessionalChancer · 05/03/2022 22:38

Come on, give them some credit. They came up with ‘Hands, face, space’ didn’t they? I bet they have a lovely little rhyme all ready.

Justmuddlingalong · 05/03/2022 22:39

I remember the old adverts and leaflets about what to do in the event of a nuclear blast. We were all taught how to hide under the desks at school. 🙄 It was truly terrifying as a child. I'd hate to be a child or parent with younger kids now, trying to cope with the worry. I'm old enough to have a "fuck it, if it happens it happens" attitude. But I remember the fear of a nuclear bomb well and sympathise with those struggling to cope with the uncertainty.

BooksAndHooks · 05/03/2022 22:39

They are welcome to their bunkers. I wouldn’t envy them if they survived a nuclear attack.

Dashel · 05/03/2022 22:40

I would like to think there have been various plans in place for sometime for nuclear attacks. The armed services must plan for things like this, whether Bojo has read or been briefed on them is another matter.

nocoolnamesleft · 05/03/2022 22:40

I would follow the advice I remember my mum giving when I was a child: run towards the bright light, so you go fast, and go together.

toomuchlaundry · 05/03/2022 22:43

I was asking DH whether we still had air raid sirens in this country, and if so where are they and who operates them?

poodlepoop · 05/03/2022 22:43

We did duck and cover practice at school in reception.

if a nuke hits I doubt there's much anyone could do, I certainly don't think hiding under a table will help

Stationfork · 05/03/2022 22:44

They will announce it on Twitter at 10pm

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 05/03/2022 22:45

I like the little model house 😄

Iamnotamermaid · 05/03/2022 22:47

Don't be silly...

Ficti · 05/03/2022 22:47

I will be joining the party at No.10 if there's a nuclear war. Boris & Co will most certainly know how to 'go out' with a bang!

Esspee · 05/03/2022 22:50

We Scots in the central belt would be the first to go as Faslane Naval Base is a prime target. We will be praying we get Independence before there’s a nuclear war because one of the first things that will happen when Scotland reverts to being an independent country is that we will send all the nuclear submarines to England probably Milford Haven.

lemongreentea · 05/03/2022 22:50

@Xpologog

The government have got a bomb shelter for themselves. I don’t think they give a flying fig what happens to anyone else. But I could be wrong.
Basically this. Boris and his current wife and official kids have spaces reserved.
AtlasPine · 05/03/2022 22:51

I don’t want my dog to suffer. He’s so pure and good. I can’t even BEAR to think of my grandchildren or their parents being caught in one. I’m not too bothered for myself as I’m at the other end of life.

Agree that there will be bunkers but only for the elite, royalty and those in parliament. What an awful bunch to repopulate the country afterwards.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/03/2022 22:52

They've been planning since 1945 at the latest. Nothing has ever changed that.

TheFoldOx · 05/03/2022 22:54

Peter Hennessy wrote a very good book on this topic a few years ago. www.amazon.co.uk/Secret-State-Whitehall-Cold-War/dp/0141008350?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

It shows how plans evolved over 40+ years as technology, both offensive and defensive, evolved. It also touches on the likelihood of the various plans surviving the reality of a nuclear exchange.

Blueeilidh · 05/03/2022 22:54

Absolutely they will have plans, just like they had plans for a pandemic.

somewhereovertherain · 05/03/2022 22:54

The only point this government would plan the response is about a week after it’s hit.

They’re a fucking useless shit show. That can’t even do sanctions properly as too in bed with the Russian backers.

somewhereovertherain · 05/03/2022 22:56

@Blueeilidh

Absolutely they will have plans, just like they had plans for a pandemic.
Trouble is they spent 10 years planning for the pandemic only for it all to be pulled to plan for a no deal Brexit.

Zero chance of them planning for a anything that doesn’t give them a profit

TheFoldOx · 05/03/2022 22:56

Which would be news to the Welsh...
wingscrow · 05/03/2022 22:56

You mean like they planned for Covid?

Johnson could not plan his way out of a paper bag...

Amnotamug · 05/03/2022 22:56

I shall euthanaise my darling dog and absolutely hold my children and granddaughter until the end !

Namechangeroo1234 · 05/03/2022 22:59

@AlternativePerspective

Well, in the event of a nuclear attack you should adopt the brace position:

Lean forward, put your head between your legs and kiss your arse goodbye.

Grin

I laughed too much at this.
Blossomtoes · 05/03/2022 22:59

@TimeForTeaAndG

The best thing you could do is get as close to the target site as possible and get wiped out cos noone wants to be around during the fallout and subsequent slow death.
This. I definitely wouldn’t want to survive.
