To wonder if the government have started any planning on what if a nuclear weapon hit britain

Even in the current climate, I don’t actually believe that a nuclear bomb will be hitting the UK.

But I wondered if the government have prepared for the eventuality.

I heard that in the 70s/80s there were loads of leaflets and adverts of what we should do if we were attacked.

In other countries they have bomb shelters and sirens.

I wouldn’t have a clue what to do. The only thing I do know is that I would want to be with my family when it happened.

Anyone one else wonder about this?

Frankly if it’s an all out release of nuclear weapons on the UK then that’s it, and quite quickly for many people.

OTOH there is a credible scenario along the lines posed by the OP - “a nuclear weapon”, singular, (basically a warning shot) then it’s down to luck but a bit of prepping might not be a bad thing.

And FWIW If the Russians went “all in” I”m not sure a bunker under the Houses of Parliament would be much use.

lllllllllll · 05/03/2022 23:44

In the event of a nuclear attack, a bomb shelter and a siren aren’t going to be much help OP.

veevee04 · 05/03/2022 23:44

I've planned I would get some drugs and end myself we aren't in the direct blast radius I checked on nuke maps. I don't fancy dying a slow death from radiation poisoning and/or starvation. It's the end if it happens there's no coming back.

tcjotm · 05/03/2022 23:46

@TimeForTeaAndG

The best thing you could do is get as close to the target site as possible and get wiped out cos noone wants to be around during the fallout and subsequent slow death.
This. Child of the 70’s/80’s. This was what I was taught. Ensure you die ASAP, there are no prizes for surviving the initial attack, you just postpone the inevitable.

Agree that they should be planning for cyber attacks, fuel and food shortages etc. But wouldn’t hold my breath.

alexdgr8 · 05/03/2022 23:46

i guess the wives were needed in the bunker; i mean someone's got to do the washing up.

ScribblingPixie · 05/03/2022 23:47

I saved a bottle of morphine from a late relative's medicine cabinet for just such an occasion.

My govt-issue handbook from the 1960s suggests I get under a table, surrounded by mattresses with my torch and water and they knew how to do things back then.....

That plan was solved decades ago and contingent s were put in place, same with Russia's mount yamantau , America's mount weather, Russia's bunker 42, etc

Today's tech, that's just a psychological reassurance, other than that, it's oh pickles, unfortunately

If the advice is anything like that contained in the Cold War Protect and Survive leaflet, it's a hard pass from me. It was utter nonsense.

Rinoachicken · 06/03/2022 00:00

There used to be something called the Civil Defence Corp - basically each area (county?) would practice and plan for what they would do in the event of bombing/attack - how they would get information to the public, public safety, infrastructure, coordinating with central govt and emergency services etc. There were still community public air raid shelter and bunkers, sirens, from WW2 and these formed part of their planning. They came under the jurisdiction of he Home Office and had funding and everything.

Then atm free the Cold War the funding was cut, plans got quietly shelved and the whole thing was disbanded. Shelters and bunkers were forgotten, sold, left to decay, repurposed.

So now, even if your local council is hastily trying to plan for ‘what if’ - there’s nothing really for them to offer - there’s nowhere they can tell you to go, there’s possibly shelters under council offices, but that’s no good for the rest of us. I don’t even know that there’s any mass notification system that would reliably get any warnings out.

So basically - don’t rely on the hope or expectation that anyone ‘higher up’ has planned for the safety and survival of the public at large. They haven’t, and in reality they can’t now. It would be too late anyway. They can’t possibly build enough public nuclear bunkers all over the UK and have them stocked and ready for the entire population.

So, if you really feel the need - it’s up to you to plan whatever you feel is best for yourself and your family.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_Defence_Corps

This old Panorama episode (titled ‘if the bomb drops) from the 1980s shows what was left of the CDC doing their little planning exercises, and talks about how all the shelters have been left to decay etc. Quite an interesting, if depressing watch.

@toomuchlaundry

I was asking DH whether we still had air raid sirens in this country, and if so where are they and who operates them?

And what was his reply?

xmaswiththeinlaws · 06/03/2022 00:05

I doubt there are any plans for anyone outside the government, they are not renowned for their ability to plan, just fend for themselves. Just hoping our house sale goes through quickly. Thinking the concrete inspection pit in our new garage could double up as a bunker if need be.

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles

I understand that we can't digest sweetcorn, so when the 'balloon goes up' and society collapses i calculate that with four tins of sweetcorn, a washing-up bowl and a small nail brush, one should be able to survive without additional food forever...
This has long been my apocalypse plan. Green Giant is on 4 for £2 currently if you have a Tesco club card

Does anyone remember this book (and the televised version)

They have their bunker and they will probably send us a text.
Crying and laughing at this
Cattenberg · 06/03/2022 00:10

I was told recently there is a bomb shelter under our County's County Hall.
For the planners if there is to be a nuclear bomb!

Made me wonder if other County Halls have the same thing, all for themselves!

Ours does! There’s one where the district council used to be as well.

I’m not one of the chosen few who’d be invited in, but if I happened to be passing at the right time and somehow got in, I can just picture myself sitting in the gloom alongside councillors, the Mayor and our godawful MP. We’d sleep on the concrete floor and live off baked beans and tinned fruit. Everyone would hear every tiny noise from the sole toilet cubicle and it would soon stink out the whole bunker. The councillors would bicker constantly and it would be too dark to read. Someone, perhaps the jolly Mayor, would magically produce a guitar and make us all sing Kumbaya and Ging Gang Goolie.

Then after a few weeks we would emerge, “OW, MY EYES!” and the councillors would keep arguing over the agendas of special budgetary meetings as their teeth and hair fell out and everybody died.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 06/03/2022 00:10

There are plans, but they aren't very reassuring so they aren't shared. It is all stuff like where to put the mass graves.

Ocsetldil · 06/03/2022 00:10

We head to Essex for the secret nuclear bunker.

The continuity of government would be one of the main primary goals, then if a national emergency was declared then all motorways, ect would be locked down for military traffic only ect
Clarabe1 · 06/03/2022 00:14

The original protect and survive videos are on you tube. I would have thought the advice today would be the same. Close the curtains and get under the table. If you don’t have curtains I presume it’s game over.

Ocsetldil · 06/03/2022 00:14

I remember When the Wind Blows @OrangeCinnamonCroissant. I was thinking about that the other day and I couldn’t remember the title. A very depressing book.

Meltinthemiddle · 06/03/2022 00:16

We got bombed to shit during the war because of the dockyard so I guess we will be fucked. During the 80's I lived 2 miles away from the dockyard and I am sure I remember my mum being given iodine tablets with a leaflet in case of a nuclear disaster.
