To wonder if the government have started any planning on what if a nuclear weapon hit britain

Even in the current climate, I don’t actually believe that a nuclear bomb will be hitting the UK.

But I wondered if the government have prepared for the eventuality.

I heard that in the 70s/80s there were loads of leaflets and adverts of what we should do if we were attacked.

In other countries they have bomb shelters and sirens.

I wouldn’t have a clue what to do. The only thing I do know is that I would want to be with my family when it happened.

Anyone one else wonder about this?

Ah - I don't think it will happen. Realistically it would be the end of the world as we know it. If it does though I'm off to a park in the middle of a city that will be hit, with a bottle of JD - I would not want to try and survive it- DH and adult DS are on board with the idea and we would hope to be instantly vaporised. I would also try all of the drugs I've never dared to take- I have heard heroin is rather moreish.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 06/03/2022 00:20

I’m assuming the government are aware we’ve all seen The Road and have realised it would be better to be at the epicentre of the bomb than survive and deal with the aftermath.

viques · 06/03/2022 00:20

I don’t think they will drop a bomb. Far easier to spread smallpox, anthrax or the stuff they used in Southampton. A co ordinated attack at a number of key high traffic sites across the country should do it. Much more Putin’s style.

ImInStealthMode · 06/03/2022 00:24

There's a concrete bunker literally in the garden of our apartment block (leftover from German occupation of Jersey in WWII). Mind you it's got a manky rotten wooden door on it these days, so not sure it'd be much use.

Rinoachicken · 06/03/2022 00:27

Seems they do have ‘a plan’

DF is on a cruise at the moment. Can you imagine just being on the high seas and WW3 happening with nuclear ICBMS flying all over the place?

Every country you want to go to has been nuked

I guess that's probably a film or something.

TimeForTeaAndG · 06/03/2022 00:33

@somewhereovertherain

As we have a nuclear power station 12 miles away. Nuclear submarine factory 30 miles away and a nuclear repossessing plant 50 miles away we’re fucked.
Waves from partway between a nuclear power station and Faslane.

Orange I have a copy.
I seem to remember then showing it as the pre-amble for Cry Freedom at the cinema and I was a soggy mess before we even got on to Steve Biko.

Anoooshka · 06/03/2022 00:41

How would we repopulate the earth if the nucler bunkers are full of old men (and only a few women)? I mean, who's going to offer to have one of the male Tory cabinet's babies?

It was very bleak and thought provoking..a bit like now I guess.

I expect Carrie has friends who fancy sacrificing themselves for some posh wallpaper.
Dougieowner · 06/03/2022 00:49

Back in the 80's I was installing standby generators in bunkers for essential services.
Some of these bunkers still contained tinned food from the 50's when they were originally built. At the time this food was being disposed of and replaced with new supplies.
20-years later I was recovering the self same generators as the bunkers were being decommissioned following the fall of the Berlin wall and the so called "piece dividend".
Of course there are still bunkers but technology has moved on and local control is no-longer required as it is more centralised.
With the best will in the world no government (especially in a densely populated country such as ours) could provide secure protection for the whole population so they have to ensure essential services (and the government) can still function and the population as a whole has to look after itself.
I can understand this so go with it regardless of how unpalatable it may seem to some.
I was also in the army (PBI) so have been trained to operate in an NBC environment and it is not a lot of fun.

Worrying isn't going to help anyone.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 06/03/2022 00:50

Orange yes it was so bleak and totally undermined the idea you might want to survive the blast. It's incredibly powerful.

nightscrollingdoom · 06/03/2022 00:56

Ah but remember that Switzerland built loads of nuclear bunkers under its apartment buildings!

What’s not to like? Politically neutral, lots of nuclear bunkers and every citizen has access to a gun. They really did intend to repopulate Europe in the event of nuclear apocalypse.

EddyF · 06/03/2022 00:58

Why London? Also why would the government issue a 20 minute warning? All it would do is cause carnage. Better to leave it as a surprise?

Davros · 06/03/2022 00:58

I live near one of these so I could try to force my way in
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Londondeep-levell_shelters
I also live near the deepest tube station on the underground

Tealightsandd · 06/03/2022 01:03

@Xpologog

The government have got a bomb shelter for themselves. I don’t think they give a flying fig what happens to anyone else. But I could be wrong.
I suspect you're right.

Or they'll have prior warning and already got themselves out to New Zealand (which is where, over the last 5-10 years, many super rich have bought up property as somewhere safer to go if needed).

AuntTwacky · 06/03/2022 01:04

🙄

PickAChew · 06/03/2022 01:10

@lightand

I was told recently there is a bomb shelter under our County's County Hall. For the planners if there is to be a nuclear bomb!

Made me wonder if other County Halls have the same thing, all for themselves!

No idea about our county hall but it does have a sprung dance floor, so we could salsa our way into oblivion.
Tealightsandd · 06/03/2022 01:11

If that face is aimed at my post Twacky you can read about it here, if you don't believe me.

Just watch "When the wind blows" and get under that table 🙄

Tealightsandd · 06/03/2022 01:15

If not out of the country, the government certainly won't be in London. They'll have an idea in advance of what might happen and how things are progressing, and will get themselves out.

DropYourSword · 06/03/2022 01:18

"Started" planning?! Nah, I'd say they have always made contingency plans since it ever became a risk. There's no way they're only starting to plan now. Refining plans maybe!

Andouillette · 06/03/2022 01:19

@notimagain

But I wondered if the government have prepared for the eventuality.

Of course they have..as others have mentioned upthread there will have been a standing plan in place since the late 1940s/very early 1950s, copies distributed and held secure in various places around the country.

The much more important questions are:

  1. When was it last reviewed and when were any revisions made to it (cf. pandemic planning)?
  1. Will the plan make a scrap of difference in the event the worse happens?
Most recent one I can find is 2015 assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/472419/NEPRG00_-_Concept_of_Operations.pdf

@Alisae

I reckon Mumsnet users should form our own wasteland horde. Safety in numbers and all that. Make a start on this thread by organising checkpoints for survivors so we can gather.

We can hammer the details out as we go along, but naturally there would be rules. Mumsnet rules.

The clan would be trained in deadly hand to hand combat techniques, such as the t-Rex arm basket slam. Clan weapon of choice: the dreaded dirty loo brush.

Stepmums, babies with their ears pierced and those who park in considerately would be our main form of sustenance in the early days.

I’ve played every single Fallout game, which pretty much makes me an expert. I’m certain that we need to start collecting bottle caps and bobbleheads to prepare for the currency change over.

I understand that we can't digest sweetcorn, so when the 'balloon goes up' and society collapses i calculate that with four tins of sweetcorn, a washing-up bowl and a small nail brush, one should be able to survive without additional food forever...

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles I vote for you to be in charge of provisions. That is exactly the type of out of the box thinking we are going to need in an apocalyptic wasteland Grin
