To wish we were back in the EU

This situation in Ukraine and seeing how the EU has responded to it all has made me miss being in the EU and want to be back in rather than just out on a limb on our own. I wondered what MNers think
YABU - better off as we are
YANBU - wish we were back in the EU

I can guarantee you most mumsnet will respond you are being reasonable. As far as I'm concerned it's a Nato thing with one objective where everyoneagrees. 27 countries making a uniformed decision is not Ideal (imo it never will work!) What do you think is better?

WandaThePanda · 27/02/2022 20:16

YANBU. We’re stronger together - I hate the feeling of our country being comparatively out on its own.

Poetrypatty · 27/02/2022 20:25

What do you think is better?

I think they've responded to the crisis more rapidly and with unity. Seeing Ursula von der leyen made me miss sensible leaders. They're allowing in refugees for 3 years whereas we're not Angry I like being part of a group, rather than just one lone country led by Boris Johnson and his useless cabinet.

We're a founding member of NATO. That's more significant than being a member of the EU. An attack on one NATO member state is considered an attack on them all.

We're not. We're in NATO.
Sometimeswinning · 27/02/2022 20:37

We're always allowing refugees?? Boris is a twat absolutely. But he'd be in charge regardless so him and his party would still say stupid things. I'm not getting your argument if I'm honest. How will the Eu make it better? You're reaching for another remainer argument. Nato is the key. Being part of Europe is why anyone is even taking any notice of this to be fair.

ReflectiveJournal · 27/02/2022 20:39

I think anyone retorting that being in NATO suffices has not read about the steps the EU has taken today.

I am ashamed we are not doing at least the same.

Poetrypatty · 27/02/2022 20:40

I'd prefer to be within the EU currently, simple as that.

As for refugees, EU have said Ukranians can stay for 3 years with no visa. We aren't taking any, except for close relatives of people already living here.

I think leaving the EU was the greatest act of economic self-harm this country has done in recent years. However, we are not going to re-join and I'd like a competent government prepared to work constructively with the EU member states.

And have you read what NATO is doing? Or have you assumed everyone is home drinking cups of tea and only the EU is acting?

Er.... NATO?
TomPinch · 27/02/2022 20:47

I can't stand Johnson but I am not sure how the EU has been brilliant and the UK awful in this recent crisis.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/02/2022 20:48

I wish it every day!

raspberryjamchicken · 27/02/2022 20:50

NATO and the EU both contribute to security in Europe. NATO is about military security while the EU is more about soft security - economic, cyber, ecological etc. Both are important. If the conflict teaches us anything, hopefully it will be how important EU-UK cooperation remains after Brexit.

Porridgealert · 27/02/2022 20:50

I don't understand. Johnson was pushing for things before the EU could get agreement. There's a reason why Donald Tusk was berating the EU leadership and the heads of state of several EU countries which wouldn't agree to do what the UK and Canada were pushing for. Controversial opinion on MN but actually, I think Johnson has done OK. He's kept in touch with Zelensky, he's given a lot of what's been asked for, he's pushed other countries to go further than they wanted to. The East Euopean states have strong ties to the UK and want to keep them, regardless of the EU, because the uk has significant armed forces which they know they need. NATO trumps the EU.

Sometimeswinning · 27/02/2022 20:51

The Eu are doing their bit. Good! They'll obviously accept Ukraine to the Eu to make Visa's a non issue?

Georgeskitchen · 27/02/2022 20:53

YABU there are several other countries that want out of the corrupt money pit that is the EU

Poetrypatty · 27/02/2022 20:55

What has he done that's good? We still have a country full of oligarchs, including in the House of Lords. We're not helping out any refugees. Johnson and Liz Truss are using it as a publicity stunt, including Johnson at some Ukranian church today even though he won't offer refuge to citizens. Truss standing in front of flags. Look at the amount of Russian money they've had. He's probably delighted that it detracts from his partying.

Yep. And it's actually quite disgusting to use the situation in Ukraine like this.

I'm no fan of Brexit. But the point is, this situation has hit home the isolation and missing being part of the EU. So it's not using the situation in Ukraine to make a point, it's saying what has happened has made not being in the EU seem worse, for people who felt part of that and felt that it was something taken away from them.

OhWhyNot · 27/02/2022 20:59

I wish we were back in the EU

But they didn’t act that quickly (as is usual with the EU) Germany dragged its feet so no I’m not impressed by how the EU in itself have handled the situation

I am impressed by Poland

And I hope we follow suit and allow people to come here

The partying is old news you need to let it go.
MimosaPiqueNique · 27/02/2022 21:00

You’re right of course and I think ultimately there will be a push to be back in the single market.

It will all come out eventually that Russian money bought Brexit and the general population will realise they have been conned.
