To wish we were back in the EU

This situation in Ukraine and seeing how the EU has responded to it all has made me miss being in the EU and want to be back in rather than just out on a limb on our own. I wondered what MNers think
YABU - better off as we are
YANBU - wish we were back in the EU

@HundredMilesAnHour

We're a founding member of NATO. That's more significant than being a member of the EU. An attack on one NATO member state is considered an attack on them all.
Yes

@Whydoesthecatalwaysdothat

This thread is baffling.

Have you been asleep for the last couple of days, Op?

This ^

Do you understand the difference between the EU and NATO op?

Have you been following the news? Did you note the EUs shambolic reaction to the blocking of swift etc? As usual their response was slow and weak.

Sorry but these self absorbed feelings about bexit are totally irrelevant to the crisis in Ukraine.

OhWhyNot · 27/02/2022 22:20

I’m impressed by Poland’s response to this crises

I’m well aware the response was different for Syrian refugees (and I hope this stays more organised) than what it shall be for refugees from Ukraine

Poland making the choice to stay or leave the EU is entirely down to what their population choose to do it’s no utopia

@FOJN

Ursula von der Leyen single handedly fucked up vaccine procurement for the EU who then took extensive legal action against, what must be, one of the only pharmaceutical companies in history to produce vaccines on a not for profit basis. Slow hand clap for UvdL, pharmaceutical companies are unlikely to be so charitable in future. She also threatened to activate article 16 of the Northern Ireland protocol when she thought we were cheating the EU out of vaccines; we weren't. Her CV is a list of incompetence and failure to deliver, she is not universally well thought of in Germany.

We are in NATO, sadly many EU members of NATO fail to spend 2% of GDP on defence as required by NATO. The UK has always paid its way. Of the 21 EU countries also members of NATO only 8 of them spend 2% of GDP on defence, it's not just the wealthiest ones either, although they all enjoy the protection of NATO. In MN parlance it's the defence equivalent of cock lodging.

The EU was far slower than the UK to close airspace to Russian air traffic despite the fact it is probably more useful for them to do so. German dependence on Russian gas and the Italians concern about reduced sales of designer goods to Russia delayed SWIFT sanctions.

There are 70,000 Ukrainians living in the UK so that would be quite a lot of close family refugees we're happy to welcome in.

There are many excellent things about the EU but a failure to see any of their short comings is baffling.

All of this.

Absolutely agree.

And with the rest of your post FOJN

TooOldandTired · 27/02/2022 22:32

This is a pretty disgusting way to find to complain about brexit op, on the back of people who are being bombed and killed.
If you want to look at the actual facts of what happened you will see the UK was ahead of the EU in providing military equipment, sanctions and agreeing to remove Russia from SWIFT. The UK had already announced sanctions while Italy and Germany were trying to get carve outs for various industries in their countries. Read what Donald Tusk has to say about them a couple of days ago - twitter.com/donaldtuskEPP/status/1497120868367056896

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 27/02/2022 22:33

Also this whole crisis is Germany's fault because they put trade with Russia above Ukraine.

They agreed to NordStream 2 when we and the US told them not to.

I agree with @TooOldandTired

Poetrypatty · 27/02/2022 22:38

FFS no it isn't. It's Russia's fault.

I actually find that comment disgusting. I am saying I wish we were still in the EU I miss the EU. It's not 'complaining about Brexit' which has already occurred and is a past event. I miss my EU friends and neighbours at this moment of world crisis. The fact that I'm not allowed to say so now according to some on here is actually quite disturbing.

Nah you're alright thanks. Last year Ukraine asked the EU for help with training their armed forces, the EU put some options forward but only came to agreement on which one to go with last week- bit late really. We have been helping to train and work alongside them since 2015 as well as providing weapons etc without the glorious red tape of the EU. If they're so wonderful I wonder when they are going to let Ukraine join and benefit from the delights of the European Union?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 27/02/2022 22:41

While I think Brexit was a folly, in this case we responded first, while the EU were dragging their feet.

Sometimeswinning · 27/02/2022 22:42

FFS no it isn't. It's Russia's fault.

*Putins fault actually.

worriedatthemoment · 27/02/2022 22:43

@Poetrypatty but we are part of europe so they are still our friends and neighbours , being in the eu doesn't make you a neighbour
Geography does

Sometimeswinning · 27/02/2022 22:44

After all this information @poetrypatty please tell me why you miss the EU?? That was your original post.

Poetrypatty · 27/02/2022 22:45

Yes sorry quite right I should have said Putin's fault.

worriedatthemoment · 27/02/2022 22:45

I think this post os quite short sighted really , no organisation is all good or all bad
And i think it is a little poor taste when you think of the suffering that many are going through and the scary times we are all living in

worriedatthemoment · 27/02/2022 22:46

** As in the eu all good or all bad

RoastedFerret · 27/02/2022 22:46

How'd that work? You were in the EU back in 2015?
I was shocked to hear about the UKs stance on refugees tbh. As soon as this all kicked off my EU country quickly waived via requirements for Ukranians and put the message out that they were welcome. We don't fund lethal weapons though. The glorious red tape of the EU allows us to make our own decisions.

Poetrypatty · 27/02/2022 22:46

I miss being a part of the EU. I think some get that some don't.

That's fine op, feel free to miss the EU and being in the EU but perhaps if you had some facts on your side and it wasn't all based on poor you and your poor feelings then people wouldn't think you were being disingenuous. this situation in Ukraine and seeing how the EU has responded to it all has made me miss being in the EU and want to be back in rather than just out on a limb on our own.I think they've responded to the crisis more rapidly and with unity.I miss the EU, I see the EU countries as our friends and allies, and I miss them and being part of it all the more in the wake of what's happened. You don't get that or don't feel that way, fine. But I do feel that way and I miss being in the EU right now. It is patently untrue that the EU responded rapidly and with unity and if you had followed what was going on in Ukraine for the last week you would know that. Maybe instead of worrying about your I miss the EU feelings you could have a bit of empathy for people being bombed and killed.

I'm confused, did you move or did your friends and neighbours move when we let the EU? If it's neither then the good news is that other European nationals can still be your friends and we didn't get towed futher into the Atlantic so we're still neighbours. Seriously OP you sound quite childishly wedded to the idea of the EU whilst being quite blind to the reality of it.
