This situation in Ukraine and seeing how the EU has responded to it all has made me miss being in the EU and want to be back in rather than just out on a limb on our own. I wondered what MNers think
YABU - better off as we are
YANBU - wish we were back in the EU

Have you read the same stuff as me?

The EU have held out for days on providing support. Italy concerned about its high worth goods and Germany it’s gas

We have offered, and continue to offer support, just like your e8 derail EU, but as is the case now, much quicker

Do your Brexit bashing elsewhere, don’t use the horrific situation in Ukraine

Tickledtrout · 27/02/2022 21:26

YA most definitely NBU OP. UvL was very impressive today. And when Putin's broken EU membership will hopefully expand to include even more Eastern European and Scandinavian states.

Russian influence in our current administration has left us impotent. One silver lining may be the eventual unravelling of that. Or at least it's clear existence to the voting public.

Who'd have thought that this European generation's Churchillian leader would be a Ukrainian Jew? Certainly not Boris. Bojo and Truss left with sad photo ops and empty soundbites.

That says more about your attitude than mine. I miss the EU, I see the EU countries as our friends and allies, and I miss them and being part of it all the more in the wake of what's happened. You don't get that or don't feel that way, fine. But I do feel that way and I miss being in the EU right now.

Ursula von der Leyen single handedly fucked up vaccine procurement for the EU who then took extensive legal action against, what must be, one of the only pharmaceutical companies in history to produce vaccines on a not for profit basis. Slow hand clap for UvdL, pharmaceutical companies are unlikely to be so charitable in future. She also threatened to activate article 16 of the Northern Ireland protocol when she thought we were cheating the EU out of vaccines; we weren't. Her CV is a list of incompetence and failure to deliver, she is not universally well thought of in Germany.

We are in NATO, sadly many EU members of NATO fail to spend 2% of GDP on defence as required by NATO. The UK has always paid its way. Of the 21 EU countries also members of NATO only 8 of them spend 2% of GDP on defence, it's not just the wealthiest ones either, although they all enjoy the protection of NATO. In MN parlance it's the defence equivalent of cock lodging.

The EU was far slower than the UK to close airspace to Russian air traffic despite the fact it is probably more useful for them to do so. German dependence on Russian gas and the Italians concern about reduced sales of designer goods to Russia delayed SWIFT sanctions.

There are 70,000 Ukrainians living in the UK so that would be quite a lot of close family refugees we're happy to welcome in.

There are many excellent things about the EU but a failure to see any of their short comings is baffling.

EthelTheAardvark · 27/02/2022 21:39

The partying is old news you need to let it go

Not sure if you've noticed, but there's an ongoing police investigation which may well result in the Prime Minister being prosecuted. If he is prosecuted and convicted, how do you suggest we let that go, @joydivisionovengloves71 ?

Wizzbangfizz · 27/02/2022 21:40

Sorry but you lost me at Ursula VDL being a good leader because she brushes her hair.

The EU are in no way showing strong leadership here and you could argue that some of their actions amounted to war mongering in the Ukraine. NATO is a far bigger and more important political organisation to be part of.

HundredMilesAnHour · 27/02/2022 21:41

Totally agree and well said @Chloemol

Some of the posters on this thread are so wrapped up in their Brexit bashing and their hatred of Boris that their interpretation of recent events is verging on delusional a la Putin.

Wizzbangfizz · 27/02/2022 21:42

@FOJN agree with your post 💯- they also dragged their heels over the Swift sanction, presumably because they couldn't agree on it.

Sometimeswinning · 27/02/2022 21:44

That says more about your attitude than mine. I miss the EU, I see the EU countries as our friends and allies,

It most definitely is a brexit bashing thread. We're still part of Europe. Hence why we all feel for the Ukraine and will help where needed. The Eu is not Europe. Its 27 privileged countries which the Ukraine didn't make it in to even though they have been desperate to! The Eu will do the minimum. Nato will do what's needed.

Sacada · 27/02/2022 21:46

RE: The EU's offer today to supply 'fighter jets' (but er.....no pilots) to Ukraine. The inanity of such an 'offer' is off the scale. Flying a fighter jet takes years of training, and a substantial back-up maintenance and support structure. Meanwhile the citizens of Kyiv are being slaughtered tonight.

Porridgealert · 27/02/2022 21:46

When UvL tok over from Juncker, she gave an impressive speech and I really thought she was a sensible and competent leader. But she's been slow-footed and unimpressive in her handling of different situations. I read about her political history in Germany and it seems like she operated on a similar fashion. Good talker but no action.
The EU will always have weak leaders because the first choices of strong competent politicians are always discarded as no country want a strong leader from another country in place in case they disadvantage other nations.

underneaththeash · 27/02/2022 21:47

I'm happy that we can make our own decisions more quickly. (and I voted for bexit).

underneaththeash · 27/02/2022 21:47

I voted against Brexit I mean

Whydoesthecatalwaysdothat · 27/02/2022 21:49

This thread is baffling.

Have you been asleep for the last couple of days, Op?

EthelTheAardvark · 27/02/2022 21:51

O P name what Ursula has done that you think Boris hasn't done????

It's more a question of naming what Johnson has done that Ursula van Der Leyen and EU haven't. For example, taking shedloads of money from Russia and Russian oligarchs for their personal political advantage, appointed people like Lebedev to a position in our legislature, allowing Russian manipulation of our media, making himself and his ministers a laughing stock when negotiating with Putin.. To say nothing of diverting billions of public funds to cronies, failing to pursue fraudulent operation of covid contracts, totally fucking up on things like PPE, care homes and the first lockdown resulting in thousands of preventable deaths, trying to change the lobbying rules to prevent his mate being disciplined, blatantly breaching the laws his own government promulgated ...

Usernamepleasework · 27/02/2022 21:56

I am Scottish and the majority here voted to remain but it didn’t matter what we wanted HmmHmmHmm

worriedatthemoment · 27/02/2022 21:59

This is just wrong
Think about what some people are going through tonight and your worried about us not being in the eu
We are still part of europe and always will be
But there a people suffering hugely and this is not the time to talk about brexit

Chloemol · 27/02/2022 21:59

Then please feel free to move to a EU country

I have friends that live in the EU, it’s not as good there either.

I would like to see the countries as our friends but the shambles over the pandemic and jabs, this situation and how Brexit showed how those European Governments thought of us for daring to leave and the rest shows it’s simply not possible to get a group of vastly different countries to agree on anything

At least we are on the front foot supporting Ukraine not having to wait for public perception to push a country into being less selfish

Sometimeswinning · 27/02/2022 22:01

I am Scottish and the majority here voted to remain but it didn’t matter what we wanted hmmhmmhmm Not a brexit thread! Ukraine war is not about you Shock

Really???? (Laughing emoji needed) 🤣🤣🤣

But what has that got yo do with yhe situation in Ukraine? Its like you hate Boris Johnson so much, you're unable to separate out different issues so there's a distinct lack of credibility in what you're saying. His handling of covid will be examined at an enquiry and I'm pretty sure he'll be gone by the next election but if not, the electorate will definitely vote him out over parties, but none of that takes away from the fact on this issue, he's handled things pretty well actually.

I am impressed by Poland

Me too, they have really stepped up and been amazing.

The NL weren't so impressed by Poland when they wanted Poland to leave the EU a few months ago:

@Poetrypatty

I am impressed by Poland

Me too, they have really stepped up and been amazing.

Also, do you think that Poland would even let one refugee if they were non-white.

Poland and Hungary are extremely racist countries and have tried to bring that racism to the UK.

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 27/02/2022 22:11

Ukraine is also racist and anti-semitic.

When the Jewish president stood for office, Jewish leaders were worried there would be a rise in anti-semitism.
