Me and my partner have very different tastes, plus he’s a big meat eater and I’m vegetarian so we often eat separately but yesterday ordered some Chinese food.

We ordered:

Half a crispy aromatic duck
Mixed seafood chow mein
Plain chow mein
Egg fried rice
Mini vegetable spring rolls (4 tiny ones)

It came to £40! I was shocked, they didn’t even give free prawn crackers. I know prices have gone up a lot recently, especially food, but I thought this was especially pricey really. How much would this order - or similar - cost in your local area?

Also, in the interest of aibu, aibu to think this was a crazy price?!

P.s. a lot of my posts seem to be about takeaways🙊 explains the weight gain I guess haha.

South East here, ordering that from my nearest takeaway would cost £41.50:

Half a crispy aromatic duck - £20
Mixed seafood chow mein - £7.50
Plain chow mein - £5.50
Egg fried rice - £4.50
Mini vegetable spring rolls (6) - £4

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/02/2022 15:48

Half a duck... £17.00
Chow mein dishes... £6.50 each
Egg fried rice... £2.40
Spring rolls £2.50

So £35ish.

purplewolfie · 27/02/2022 15:49

The duck's the pricey thing -should've gone for a 1/4!

CMOTDibbler · 27/02/2022 15:49

About £38 from ours

YetAnotherWalk · 27/02/2022 15:50

Sounds about right, but we'd get free crackers.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 27/02/2022 15:52

About £40 at mine, SW London.

SC215 · 27/02/2022 15:53

Half a crispy aromatic duck: £19
Prawn chow mein: £7.30
Bean sprouts chow mein: £5
Egg fried rice: £3.40
Mini spring rolls: £3.50 for 2, so £7
Delivery: £1.50
Total: £43.20

Half a crispy duck is always expensive.

Grilledaubergines · 27/02/2022 15:53

I’m London/Surrey and that’s £30 approx

Curiosity101 · 27/02/2022 15:54

£35.40 + £2 delivery so £37.50 in total

We're in Nottinghamshire

The duck was £18 on its own

SC215 · 27/02/2022 15:54

Also what did you have the egg fried rice with?!

Curiosity101 · 27/02/2022 15:54

*£37.40 in total

Nidan2Sandan · 27/02/2022 15:54

East Anglia

Half a duck £21.50
Chow mein £7.50 each
Egg fried rice £3.60
Spring rolls £2.40

So £42.50 plus delivery charge

rainbowunicorn · 27/02/2022 15:55

About £38 here. Nearly £16 just for the duck though so that is where the biggest expense is with Chinese takeaway.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 27/02/2022 15:55

Our local Chinese doesn't do the duck so I can't compare that but I'm guessing the duck is expensive? We spend £40 between 4 of us and that gets us loads!

Bluepop09 · 27/02/2022 15:58

Half a crispy aromatic duck £16.90

Mixed seafood chow mein - they don't have mixed seafood but have a mixed special which is the most expensive at £7.90

Plain chow mein £3.90

Egg fried rice £2.90

Mini vegetable spring rolls £4.20 but you get 12 so for 4 would be £1.40

Total £33, plus 15% off orders over £25 = £28.05. North east. Bargain lol

TheWitchersWife · 27/02/2022 15:59

Went and got my menu off the fridge.

Half a crispy aromatic duck with pancakes - £14
King Prawn chow mein - £6.10 (they don't do mixed sea food, they also do shrimp chow mein at £5.80)
Plain chow mein - £3.80 (large)
Egg fried rice - £3.50 (large)
Mini vegetable spring rolls (10) - £2.70.

So £30.10. Cheaper if you chose regulars instead of large.

We do go to these because they're amazing, cheap, and do the best deals. You have to either collect or order on the phone, cash payments only. Free delivery within 3 miles and free prawn crackers when you spend £13.
Not in ubereats, justeat or any of the others.

Ribrabrob · 27/02/2022 15:59

Interesting, so it does all seem to be roughly the same! I just thought it seemed very expensive.

@SC215 I was boring and just had some of the rice with the plain chow mein and spring rolls. If I were having it with more people I’d have bits and bobs of other dishes (seaweed, chips, foo young) stuff but my partner only likes the duck and seafood noodles so won’t share dishes :(

I'm in east London and half crispy duck can range from 10 to 25. There's a massive variety in prices here.

ukborn · 27/02/2022 16:01

Sounds about right. The half duck is about £19 here.

countdowntonap · 27/02/2022 16:06

Half a crispy aromatic duck £15.60
Mixed seafood chow mein £6.60
Plain chow mein £5.50
Egg fried rice £3.20
Mini vegetable spring rolls £4.10 for 12

=£35

TattiePants · 27/02/2022 16:08

Half a crispy aromatic duck - £19
Mixed seafood chow mein - £7.80
Plain chow mein - £6.30
Egg fried rice - £2.50
Mini vegetable spring rolls - £4.50

£39.90 in the north east

SquirmOfEels · 27/02/2022 16:08

Half a duck £27:50
King prawn chow mein (don't have seafood) £6.50
Plain chow mein £5.50
Egg fried rice £4
Mini vegetable spring rolls (8pc, don't have 4s) £4

Total: £47.50

London - the price point of about £18 gets you a quarter duck

MayBMaybenot · 27/02/2022 16:08

Just looked at our take away menu and it would be £36.00 but you would get some free prawn crackers onto. (East Midlands, near Derby)

Chestofdraws · 27/02/2022 16:09

He ate half a crispy duck and a seafood chowmein to himself. That’s a lot of food

Cost is average but his meal was very expensive and about thirty quid.
