Me and my partner have very different tastes, plus he’s a big meat eater and I’m vegetarian so we often eat separately but yesterday ordered some Chinese food.

We ordered:

Half a crispy aromatic duck
Mixed seafood chow mein
Plain chow mein
Egg fried rice
Mini vegetable spring rolls (4 tiny ones)

It came to £40! I was shocked, they didn’t even give free prawn crackers. I know prices have gone up a lot recently, especially food, but I thought this was especially pricey really. How much would this order - or similar - cost in your local area?

Also, in the interest of aibu, aibu to think this was a crazy price?!

P.s. a lot of my posts seem to be about takeaways🙊 explains the weight gain I guess haha.

In Essex

Marmite27 · 27/02/2022 16:41

Leeds, £30-ish. There’s no seafood chowmein on the menu, so just went for a special and a veg

Half a duck - £15
Special chow mien - £5.80
Veg chow mien - £5.20
Mini spring rolls (6) - £3

You’d get free chicken wings over £15 too and they always Chuck half a bag of prawn crackers in too if you don’t order them (we’ll they do for us Wink)

phoenixrosehere · 27/02/2022 16:41

Half a crispy aromatic duck - £18
Mixed seafood chow mein (equivalent) - £8.20
Plain chow mein - £5
Egg fried rice - £2.50
Mini vegetable spring rolls (4 tiny ones) - £5.50 (for 5)

£39.20

In Oxfordshire

Duck and seafood are usually more expensive dishes.

OneTC · 27/02/2022 16:42

Between 30 and 40. South South London

Marmite27 · 27/02/2022 16:42

So £40.70 I’m in Scotland.

OldTinHat · 27/02/2022 16:46

£31.50 in the south east, and free prawn crackers.

maddy68 · 27/02/2022 16:55

Northwest ....around 40 ish.

IhateHSBC · 27/02/2022 16:58

Half Duck £15.50
Seafood Chow Mein £6.20
Plain Chow Mein £3.50
Egg Fried Rice £2.00
Mini Vegetable Spring Rolls (4) £1.50
£28.70 total.

EveryAvenue · 27/02/2022 17:03

Just priced it up at my local in Manchester central. £37.60 with delivery.

Half duck- £15.80
Seafood chow mein £7.20
Plain chow mein £5.90
Egg fried rice £2.70
Mini veg spring roll (4) £3.50
Delivery fee 2.50

They only give free prawn crackers if you order over the phone for delivery/ collection and pay in cash. It’s definitely the meat. We order vegan for two from the same Chinese and it costs roughly £28 with delivery and we always have enough left over for the next day.

Jody21 · 27/02/2022 17:17

Half crispy duck 16e
Prawn chow mein 9e
Plain chow mein 4.50e

So roughly 37 euro (I'm in Ireland), that's probably about 30stg.

Gingerkittykat · 27/02/2022 17:21

NightmareSlashDelightful · 27/02/2022 17:24

I’d be paying around £45, £47 for that order from my local takeaway.

No free prawn crackers though? Bastards Grin

roundtable · 27/02/2022 17:29

I dont have a menu to hand but that sounds about right. The duck is a stinger.

If we ever order a Chinese we buy duck from the supermarket. I'm too stingy to pay all that. Plus we do our own rice as we jist have boiled and we prefer jasmine.

Hope you enjoyed it though op - I would have been miffed too at the lack of prawn crackers. That's a given surely? I've not had a Chinese in a long time so maybe it's changed?

Roselilly36 · 27/02/2022 17:39

Sounds about right. Did you not know the price when you ordered it OP? Not sure why you seem surprised, half a duck is a fairly expensive dish from a takeaway.

NerrSnerr · 27/02/2022 17:48

@SC215

Also what did you have the egg fried rice with?!
With the rest of the meal I assume?
littlepeas · 27/02/2022 17:54

I can't believe I actually just checked this, but was curious! This would have been £34.80 from our Chinese takeaway - South Warwickshire.

Georgyporky · 27/02/2022 17:57

Restaurant or t/a ?

BarbaraofSeville · 27/02/2022 17:58

Not sure exactly as the menu for the Chinese takeaway is in the car, but I'd say £20-25 and that's after considerable price rises recently, six months ago, it would be more like £15-18.

What did you have, just the spring rolls and some of the rice and noodles?

But there must have been loads of food there, portions are usually large so I'd expect that amount of food to serve 3-4 comfortably or do leftovers for lunch for you both.

If it's a cost issue, you probably want to not order two large meals for one person.

TheChosenTwo · 27/02/2022 17:59

£40 roughly round here (SE). free delivery and a bag of prawn crackers usually.
