Me and my partner have very different tastes, plus he’s a big meat eater and I’m vegetarian so we often eat separately but yesterday ordered some Chinese food.

We ordered:

Half a crispy aromatic duck
Mixed seafood chow mein
Plain chow mein
Egg fried rice
Mini vegetable spring rolls (4 tiny ones)

It came to £40! I was shocked, they didn’t even give free prawn crackers. I know prices have gone up a lot recently, especially food, but I thought this was especially pricey really. How much would this order - or similar - cost in your local area?

Also, in the interest of aibu, aibu to think this was a crazy price?!

P.s. a lot of my posts seem to be about takeaways🙊 explains the weight gain I guess haha.

Central London - £60-ish

CrimbleCrumble1 · 27/02/2022 16:12

We only get quarter of a duck.

transformandriseup · 27/02/2022 16:13

Half duck in our touristy town is £20. We rarely order it.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 27/02/2022 16:14

We're in Cumbria.

Half a crispy aromatic duck - £9.80
Mixed seafood chow mein - £7.50
Plain chow mein - £3.70
Egg fried rice - £2.90
Mini vegetable spring rolls (4 tiny ones) - £3.20 for 10

So in total, £23.90.

ProfYaffle · 27/02/2022 16:14

Yes, it's the half duck for one person that's expensive. We only ever get a quarter. Agree with pp, half a duck and a chow mien is a lot of food for one person.

BobbinHood · 27/02/2022 16:14

It’s the half, rather than quarter, duck that’s made it so expensive. Half crispy aromatic duck is a lot for one person! That whole order is a lot of food for 2 so I’m not surprised it came to £40+. Would definitely have expected free prawn crackers though!

SquirmOfEels · 27/02/2022 16:15

And from the other Chinese takeaway nearby:

Aromatic duck, half £19.50
House special chow mein with seafood £9.60
Plain chow mein £5.95
Egg fried rice £5.60
Mini vegetable spring rolls (10) £5.30

Total: £45.95

ShinyMe · 27/02/2022 16:19

Hm. I had no idea how much this would come to here, so I checked my local takeaway and we're talking:

Half a crispy aromatic duck - not available in any of my locals, but you could get an aromatic duck starter for £8.30
Mixed seafood chow mein £6.30 (well, this was for a king prawn one, I couldn't see a seafood one)
Plain chow mein £4.50
Egg fried rice £4
Mini vegetable spring rolls (4 tiny ones) £3.80 for 10

FangsForTheMemory · 27/02/2022 16:21

There's only one good Chinese near me (the other isn't very nice) and this is what they charge:

Half a crispy aromatic duck £19.70
Mixed seafood chow mein £8.50 (price for king prawn mixed n/a)
Plain chow mein £5.30
Egg fried rice £3.80
Mini vegetable spring rolls (4 tiny ones) £1.65 (actually £3.30 for 8)

Comes to £38.95, so virtually the same as yours. I'm in the southwest.

asocialistvalentine · 27/02/2022 16:22

Half a crispy aromatic duck - £15
Mixed seafood chow mein - £6.50
Plain chow mein £5
Egg fried rice - £2.80
Mini vegetable spring rolls - £2.80

£32.10

Ribrabrob · 27/02/2022 16:24

@Chestofdraws it is indeed, I don’t disagree. He’s got a bit of a strange eating schedule though - nothing all day sometimes and then a really big meal in the evening.

ImInStealthMode · 27/02/2022 16:25

£40.80 here (Jersey) but we'd get prawn crackers thrown in.

EdithWeston · 27/02/2022 16:25

Half aromatic duck - £16.00
Chow mein with seafood - £8.50
Plain chow mein - £5.00
Egg fried rice (large) - £3.50
4 vegetable spring rolls - £3.00

Total - £36.00

No delivery, must collect. East Midlands

Justme10 · 27/02/2022 16:26

Half crispy Peking duck £17.50
Chow Mein dishes £8
Egg fried rice £2
3 mini veg spring rolls £3

So £38.50 but with delivery would be £40.
And you would get free prawn crackers.

PrimroseTheSmooth · 27/02/2022 16:27

Half a duck- £18.50
Seafood noodles- £9.90
Plain chow mein- £6.80
EFR- £4.90
Mini veg spring rolls- £5.20

£45.30 in North London.

DubiousGoals · 27/02/2022 16:27

I'm in Kent, it would be £32.90 plus £2 delivery charge

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 27/02/2022 16:29

£42 from the nice one near me in the North East. The disgusting one would likely be less.

oviraptor21 · 27/02/2022 16:29

Also SE

Half a crispy aromatic duck - £19.50
Mixed seafood chow mein - £10.90
Plain chow mein - £5.50
Egg fried rice - £4.50
Mini vegetable spring rolls (6) - £4.20

£45.00

OdeToSadDisco · 27/02/2022 16:30

£34.40 but with 8 spring rolls, from my favourite takeaway. The duck is the expensive bit, £18.50.

Edge of London.

goingtotown · 27/02/2022 16:31

North London £42 + 4 delivery.

SpiderVersed · 27/02/2022 16:33

Given that half a crispy duck is £15-18, that’s where the expense is. Your DH must eat for England to scoff all the duck and a seafood chow mein. He’s also picked probably the most expensive items on the menu.

user5898533 · 27/02/2022 16:35

Half a duck is a ridiculous amount for one person though? It 10/12 pancakes worth

Chestofdraws · 27/02/2022 16:36

He didn’t eat it with pancakes he just had the meat it seems with rice and chow mien.
Aubrrgin · 27/02/2022 16:36

I’m in Dublin and, based on menu from our local Chinese take-away, it’d come to €49.00 (so £41.20) excluding delivery.

Not doing the Mumsnet “anyone who eats more than a single Cornflake is just asking for diabetes” thing, but the issue here is that the duck is an expensive main course in itself so you’ve basically ordered enough food for at least three people.

TwoCoffeesPlease · 27/02/2022 16:36

I just ran that order through just eat and came to £38.

What were you expecting op? Takeaways are very expensive especially when you get the duck. Seems pretty normal to me
