Flying to Europe - is it safe?

StressyMcStressFace · 25/02/2022 10:31

This may be the stupidest question but I'm going to ask it anyway because I would really welcome opinions (not on how stupid I am thanks!).

Do you think it is wise to fly to Europe on holiday in light if the current situation in Ukraine? Genuine question as I am not very clued up on the ins and outs of the invasion (apart from the big headlines) and was just wondering how safe it is likely to be albeit at the end of June. I started thinking about it due to a comment made on another thread about the fact that a passenger flight could be shot down even if accidentally.

Do we need to reconsider flying to Europe or are we safe enough?

Obviously nobody can see into the future and maybe this is a non-question but I thought it might be a question worth asking. Thanks

Your better off just watching or listening to the news now[/quote]
We have talked through a plan should things kick off there but it's still very much a back stopped doubt will be necessary.

I will crawl on m hand and knees with my children on my back to make my two abroad holidays this year.

Out of interest, what have you planned? Situation so unknown that I can’t see how a plan could be formulated

BananaPlants · 26/02/2022 11:09

@lightisnotwhite - why Turkey?

thanktor · 26/02/2022 11:11

@user1481840227

There should be some government website where they detail travel advice.

I'm in Ireland so i'm not sure what the UK one is but that is normally the place to keep your eye on.

There is Confused

FO travel advice

thanktor · 26/02/2022 11:13

@lightisnotwhite

Poland are Hungary are expecting lots of refugees so that’s going to change what they offer to tourists, regardless of whether it’s going to be possible. I’d avoid Turkey. Not sure Putin is over the Crimean war either.
I’ve booked there

Will take more than Puton to put me off

The only way I won’t be going abroad this year is if the travel company cancels it on my behalf

Simply come back to UK to stay with us.

thanktor · 26/02/2022 11:27

Oh! A simple plan!

WaterBottle123 · 26/02/2022 11:28

@Truegreen

I’ve just cancelled my med cruise for this reason.

Every family member also cancelled their holidays yesterday for same reason.

Holidays are supposed to be fun and relaxing. The worries ruined it for us.

I call bullshit, an entire family cannot be this dim.

New to mumsnet?

thanktor · 26/02/2022 11:29

Because if you’d been on here during the pandemic
You would have realised that people can be.
Many can be

StScholastica · 26/02/2022 11:32

@DameHelena

The whole of Russia lies between Poland and Ukraine. Eh? Poland has an eastern border with Ukraine, doesn't it?
Maybe she is flying anticlockwise round the globe Grin

This gives a potted history/where are they now. www.businessinsider.com/turkey-growing-ties-with-russia-have-caused-problem-for-nato-2022-1?r=US&IR=T

Historically they have always scraped with each other.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 26/02/2022 11:47

There are currently thousands of flights in the sky all over Europe
Thousands of tourists on holiday
Thousands travelling every day
And not one government has grounded flights or warned against travel
I'm soaking up the sun here and will head home in a few days
Just like thousands of other people
And quite frankly if your entire family is full enough to cancel a cruise three months hence to a part of the world nowhere near trouble it's probably best you stay at home.
People working in every aspect of tourism and hospitality are on their knees after covid
Another summer of cancellation will likely be a death knell for many of them.
And that will have catastrophic economic consequences
All because of people who don't understand basic geography

thanktor · 26/02/2022 12:24

@lightisnotwhite

Historically - a lot of shit between countries has gone on

Look what happened to the Lusitania. Cruise liners do get torpedoed.

They knew the risk as had been explicitly declared!!

* The attack took place in the declared maritime war-zone around the UK, shortly after unrestricted submarine warfare against the ships of the United Kingdom had been announced by Germany following the Allied powers' implementation of a naval blockade against it and the other Central Powers*

You need a holiday!

Zazdar · 26/02/2022 20:31

You need a holiday!

Got one booked. In that Russian enclave 60 miles from Syria known as Cyprus.

thanktor · 26/02/2022 21:14

Phew!
