Flying to Europe - is it safe?

StressyMcStressFace · 25/02/2022 10:31

This may be the stupidest question but I'm going to ask it anyway because I would really welcome opinions (not on how stupid I am thanks!).

Do you think it is wise to fly to Europe on holiday in light if the current situation in Ukraine? Genuine question as I am not very clued up on the ins and outs of the invasion (apart from the big headlines) and was just wondering how safe it is likely to be albeit at the end of June. I started thinking about it due to a comment made on another thread about the fact that a passenger flight could be shot down even if accidentally.

Do we need to reconsider flying to Europe or are we safe enough?

Obviously nobody can see into the future and maybe this is a non-question but I thought it might be a question worth asking. Thanks

I think that is a slight over reaction, no one is cancelling holidays yet, you'll be fine

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 25/02/2022 15:29

I'm due to go Latvia in August. To be entirely honest, if Russia invades Latvia (a NATO member), then we've got far bigger problems than worrying about a holiday!

FlorrieLindley · 25/02/2022 15:31

@junglejane66 🤣

Exactly...

@BarbaraofSeville

FFS I was being sarcastic.

This thread is insane, as are most of the Ukraine related threads on here today.

Russia are bombing the shit out of Ukraine and people are asking daft questions about the likelihood of being shot down on a flight to Spain in 4 months time.

Sorry, I didn't get your irony then, probably because of too many panic posters here.
KloppsTeeth · 25/02/2022 15:36

Until the government advises against travel, I shall still go on my holiday.

Scianel · 25/02/2022 15:36

@BattenbergdowntheHatches I like you.

tttigress · 25/02/2022 15:43

A work colleague (who works in Krakow, Poland), has just rearranged their holidays due to this war.

bigbluebus · 25/02/2022 15:45

The Foreign Office will advise you if it's not safe to travel to individual countries.

We are planning a holiday in August to Majorca, can’t see a problem with that.

HelpMeHiveMind · 25/02/2022 15:48

I was a little confused why NATO have sent ships to the med. I'd assumed Spain / Greece etc would be totally fine, does anybody have reason to think otherwise? Obviously if a full-scale European war has broken out by summer it could be different, but i doubt summer jollies will be top priority in that case.

Poland does border Russia. There's a tiny bit of Russia in between Lithuania and Poland, opposite from Sweden. It also borders Belarus and Ukraine so no I wouldn't say it's a particularly safe country to go to right now.

OP, Spain will be fine.

AuldAlliance · 25/02/2022 15:53

You might want to avoid countries that border Ukraine, certainly. The one my sibling lives in is preparing for a massive influx of refugees and organising blood donations to deal with casualties they expect to arrive over the border in already overstretched hospitals.

But Spain should be fine.*

  • Disclaimer: Unless there's been a series of huge earthquakes no one spotted, like the one that has apparently shifted the enormous landmass of Russia and squeezed it in between Ukraine and Poland. Maybe Spain's gone thousands of kilometres northeast? In which case, all bets are off.
Lesperance · 25/02/2022 15:55

The UK is still in Europe, OP. As much as Ukraine is. I've got two countries between me and Ukraine, you will have three if you go to Spain, which is the same as if you stay in the UK. I am not worried at all, and you shouldn't be either. I wouldn't book a holiday to Moldova right now, but Spain should be fine. Enjoy your holiday.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/02/2022 15:57
We know that.

But without the big bit with Moscow in, it's not 'the whole of Russia in between Poland and Ukraine' unless there's a big wormhole accessed by a secret door at the back of Kalingrad's main library.

LegallyBlende · 25/02/2022 15:58

I dont think many planes fly into Uranian air space very often anyway, a bit too far to go

Probably too early to say from a political perspective.

Yes but the Kaliningrad Oblast is not "the whole of Russia" - it's a bit of German East Prussia that the Soviets thought would be a useful port after WW2.

Russia is between Poland and the USA (Alaska) if you look at it that way!

I am going to Denmark in June - I suspect we have bigger problems than holidays if it is dangerous to fly there by then.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 25/02/2022 16:04

JuergenSchwarzwald · 25/02/2022 16:06

Norway has a border with Russia too. I doubt anyone is cancelling trips there.

LemonViolet · 25/02/2022 16:06

Literally none of Russia is between Poland and Ukraine, I’d really love to hear the explanation for that one!
