Flying to Europe - is it safe?

This may be the stupidest question but I'm going to ask it anyway because I would really welcome opinions (not on how stupid I am thanks!).

Do you think it is wise to fly to Europe on holiday in light if the current situation in Ukraine? Genuine question as I am not very clued up on the ins and outs of the invasion (apart from the big headlines) and was just wondering how safe it is likely to be albeit at the end of June. I started thinking about it due to a comment made on another thread about the fact that a passenger flight could be shot down even if accidentally.

Do we need to reconsider flying to Europe or are we safe enough?

Obviously nobody can see into the future and maybe this is a non-question but I thought it might be a question worth asking. Thanks

@HelpMeHiveMind

I was a little confused why NATO have sent ships to the med. I'd assumed Spain / Greece etc would be totally fine, does anybody have reason to think otherwise? Obviously if a full-scale European war has broken out by summer it could be different, but i doubt summer jollies will be top priority in that case.
Ukraine's on the Black Sea. The only access to the Black Sea is through the Mediterranean.

Of course NATO always have ships in the Med anyway, many NATO countries have a Mediterranean coast and several have a Black Sea coast.

I’m an air hostess, I’ll still be going to work (albeit not to Russia any time soon) I’m going to Spain next month on holiday, no concerns at all

Deliberateplanning · 25/02/2022 16:22

This is the Ukraine thread equivalent of washing and quarantining our shopping back in 2020 isn't it

givethatbabyaname · 25/02/2022 16:27

I just googled "Uranian", just to be sure. Yes, it really does mean "relating to Uranus".

It's been since about 2016 that I've frequently thought I'm living in a different world to so many people. Maybe, Uranus...

Mochudubh · 25/02/2022 16:43

The chances of anything coming from Uranus.........

thanktor · 25/02/2022 16:46

It would have to be full blown ww3 to derail my intention to holiday abroad this year. In fact - for first time in just a few weeks

ldontWanna · 25/02/2022 16:54

Spain is fine and should continue to be fine. And if it isn't and shit is flying over it,even by mistake then we're definitely better off going to Uranus.

SallyCinnamon3009 · 25/02/2022 16:55

What do people feel the chances of getting to Egypt in July are? I'm thinking it's gonna be quiet as last time I went the majority of guests were Russian

liveforsummer · 25/02/2022 16:56

I imagine by June it will all be over, if not unless you are planning to visit Moscow or Kyiv then I'm sure you'll be fine. You'll know by then if that's changed though.

@Truegreen

I’ve just cancelled my med cruise for this reason.

Every family member also cancelled their holidays yesterday for same reason.

Holidays are supposed to be fun and relaxing. The worries ruined it for us.

What?!
Juno22 · 25/02/2022 17:04

How can anyone on here know whether we will be able to go on holiday to Spain at the end of June? It's only February.

I’d be fascinated to know your stance on covid

I’m guessing you were…. Cautious?! Grin

thanktor · 25/02/2022 17:06

Somewhat supportive of lockdown perhaps?

May be?! 🤣

@BattenbergdowntheHatches - excellent comment! Perhaps the best on all of these ridiculous threads today Smile

Honestly, some people need a good old dose of common sense and an atlas! If the nuclear apocalypse does come, at least we all know who would make it now Hmm

Yes but at least people didn't stop getting their shopping altogether, months in advance, just in case ... 😆

Were you all going on holidays in or near those countries?

Seems somewhat of a random over reaction tbh.

1forAll74 · 25/02/2022 17:26

A lot of airlines are now altering their airspace, as to where planes can and can't go. things can change all the time..Danger in the skies it seems.

Yes they can't go over Ukrainian airspace - not really an issue when flying Manchester to Alicante

Seriously?

Jeezo, Covid really has fucked with a lot of people's heads and perception of risk. That and 24 hour rolling news.

RobotValkyrie · 25/02/2022 17:42

Actually OP's question is not completely ridiculous re: holiday plans. Russia has just closed its airspace to British flights, in retaliation to the UK doing the same to Russian flights. There could be more "tit for tat" involving other European countries (as they impose sanctions of their own on Russia), meaning many European flights normally crossing Russian airspace may need rerouting.
That wouldn't impact flights from the UK to Spain, but it would impact many flights from the UK (and perhaps other European countries) to Asia.

I would feel pretty nervous, personally, if I had to fly over that part of the world right now. A passenger plane did get shot down while flying over Ukraine, back in 2014 (when the current conflict really started)

HenceThus · 25/02/2022 17:43

@thunderonlyhappenswhenits

What do people think about Cyprus ? Meant to be going in may
In the kindest possible way, if it's not safe to travel to the Mediterranean in May, you, we all will have slightly more urgent worries as it would mean the conflict has spread, which would be devastating for Europe, so book your holidays by the sea, most likely you will have an amazing time., unless of course, we are already nuked not likely.
