Flying to Europe - is it safe?

This may be the stupidest question but I'm going to ask it anyway because I would really welcome opinions (not on how stupid I am thanks!).

Do you think it is wise to fly to Europe on holiday in light if the current situation in Ukraine? Genuine question as I am not very clued up on the ins and outs of the invasion (apart from the big headlines) and was just wondering how safe it is likely to be albeit at the end of June. I started thinking about it due to a comment made on another thread about the fact that a passenger flight could be shot down even if accidentally.

Do we need to reconsider flying to Europe or are we safe enough?

Obviously nobody can see into the future and maybe this is a non-question but I thought it might be a question worth asking. Thanks

I actually feel bad laughing at this as for the people of Ukraine and their family and friends abroad it's so very devastating but is this a branch of grief tourism, but for drama? Trying to find a way to be involved in something not affecting you?!

@RobotValkyrie I think a general unease that that flights might be cancelled is one thing, but concern about being shot down on the way to Spain is a bit extreme.
I was working in Moscow when the Malaysian plane was shot down. It was in airspace right over the pro-separatist forces that brought it down. If there is a war zone between U.K. and Spain this summer we have more to worry about than package tours.

curlymom · 25/02/2022 17:52

Will it be safe to go to the moon?

Truegreen · 25/02/2022 17:55

Travel agent last night said loads of people are cancelling cruises

I guess the uncertainty on top of Covid restrictions is just too much

Makes total sense to me! If you wait, you will lose your money. Not so crazy surely?

RoseRedRoseBlue · 25/02/2022 17:57

This is getting absolutely ludicrous

You are already in Europe OP. Is it safe?

toconclude · 25/02/2022 18:02

@Truegreen

Not really an over reaction to cancel our cruise. We got a full refund, if we waited we wouldn’t, insurance doesn’t cover war afaik

We’re not the only ones to do so. Took ages to get through to travel agent and in their words they processed huge volumes of refunds yesterday.

Just because a lot of people are overreacting doesn't mean you aren't.Hmm
Flazeda · 25/02/2022 18:03

In all seriousness, follow Foreign Office travel advice for the latest information on where is safe to travel and where isn't.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 25/02/2022 18:04

Cracking I'm sat on the beach in the Canaries

God the stupid is strong on here currently

Lanawashington · 25/02/2022 18:06

I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight until I see an explanation of how the whole Russia is between Poland and Ukraine. I’ve been thinking about it all day

BearOfEasttown · 25/02/2022 18:07

@StressyMcStressFace

It's only Spain! I'm aware it is nowhere near Ukraine! Like I said I know it may be a stupid question but maybe I just need some reassurance thanks. Enjoy your holiday parky04
Oh FFS! Hmm
Hobnobswantshernameback · 25/02/2022 18:07

Why the fuck would you cancel a cruise?
Putin hasn't got U boats torpedoing middle aged westerners with more money than sense in the southern med ffs

Truegreen · 25/02/2022 18:08

Well looks like NATO is mobilising, so a European war is looking like a possibility.

I’d rather stay at home in this scenario thanks.

I was pretty relaxed about Covid, but this feels different.

caranations · 25/02/2022 18:09

We'd been idly toying with the idea of going to Moldova. Not now.

GallopingHighRoad · 25/02/2022 18:10

I am really surprised people are considering cancelling holidays this Summer because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Ignorant at best.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 25/02/2022 18:11

Oh god
I don't want to share a planet with people that are this thick
Imagine that they'd be like if the shit really was hitting the fan close to home

Hobnobswantshernameback · 25/02/2022 18:11

Anyone want to join me for some sangria?

cyclamenqueen · 25/02/2022 18:11

The reason people are cancelling is because most insurance excludes war and people quite simply can’t afford the risk of losing the money. Frankly I hate the idea of cruising anyway but I was going to the Med and could rebook for somewhere else and not risk losing money I’d probably do it. Everyone wants holidays to go ahead this year without a hitch.

Was just talking to a polish friend who is very worried about her parents who are elderly and live 20 miles from the Ukraine border. She said people here have no idea about how vulnerable people feel especially if you remember the the brutal way that Russia suppressed the 1956 uprisings in Hungary and Poland.

Just look towards the bright light, you might not have to much longer 🙈
Juno22 · 25/02/2022 18:12

Gallopinghighroad I agree. I despair, and I despair that people are even thinking about it at the moment.

Juno22 · 25/02/2022 18:13

If the situation is dangerous the cruise ships won't be going and people will get their money back. The knee jerk reactions are ridiculous.

GarlandsinGreece · 25/02/2022 18:13

The Russian foreign ministry has said it will intervene militarily in Sweden and Finland if they decide to join NATO. So yes, I actually do feel a bit uneasy right now about travel.

user1481840227 · 25/02/2022 18:14

There should be some government website where they detail travel advice.

I'm in Ireland so i'm not sure what the UK one is but that is normally the place to keep your eye on.
