To be absolutely terrified of war

Putin has threatened severe consequences unlike any ever experienced before, if any Western countries intervene. I have relatives in Africa and am wondering whether to evacuate the UK now before it's too late. A Chinese official on Channel 4 the other day said this would trigger Armageddon. Is anywhere safe in the world if things escalate? Are we all doomed? I was at the market earlier and heard some students talking about learning how to use a gun and conscription not being far off. This is all really scary.

It's ALMOST as if all those rumours about fake news, and the Kremlin paying bots/shills to whip up fear across various European countries could be true....

Conscription my arse.

Chikapu · 24/02/2022 19:33

@LampLighter414

Very scary. Rumours are they'll bring back conscription for all able bodied men
Do you feel clever for posting this?
Chloemol · 24/02/2022 19:39

If he hits the button it doesn’t matter where in the world you are

Theunamedcat · 24/02/2022 19:44

My only concern is China if they back Russia we are potentially fucked

Choccy21 · 24/02/2022 19:44

There won’t be conscription, let’s be realistic.
And if that was the case, women would also be involved, as all combat roles are now open to men.
Putin doesn’t want Ukraine to join NATO.
NATOs Forces would our number Russia by ten times.

Putin said if the West get involved they’ll be consequences that have never been seen before.

So surely the West have to intervene, otherwise Putin will do what he likes as he knows the West would be scared of him..
It’s very complicated.

SweetPetrichor · 24/02/2022 19:45

Unless you’re in Ukraine, I wouldn’t worry. Don’t borrow trouble.

bluetongue · 24/02/2022 19:49

Thanks Mumsnet. I needed this thread. Won’t lie this current situation hasn’t been great for my mental health. At least I’m in Australia not Poland or Lithuania so at least it’s a very, very long way away.

Where have these rumours come from? What a stupid thing to post. It's achieving nothing but making people more anxious than they maybe already.
godmum56 · 24/02/2022 20:03

Google Cuban Missile Crisis. There's a good film about it too. Its called 13 days

mumofEandE · 24/02/2022 20:12

Are you in the UK?
Conscription?
I can't imagine any of my Year 11s summing up any energy to be of any use!

@HereComesTheSum

So many of these ridiculous threads today. 100% DM phishing for stories.
What a stupid post! Yes dear, I know that the DM is considered the depth of everything but, whisper it softly, other news outlets are available, even the Grauniad will take a view!

Then they can self-identify out of it.

Don't talk such absolute bollocks. There are no such tumours.
HesterShaw1 · 24/02/2022 20:23

Rumours even

JudgeJ · 24/02/2022 20:23

@MonStylo

Where the people going nuts about this on Mumsnet today alive (or older than a young child) in 1991? It was way more scary then, I was terrified by “When the wild blows”. Still here though.
I'm in my 70s and have lived through things like this many times, the Cuban Missile Crisis was the worst I can remember, I recall talking at school if we would be going home.
HesterShaw1 · 24/02/2022 20:23

And turn off the news and stop trying to infect other people with your panic. If it's actually genuine.

Libraryghost · 24/02/2022 20:24

Nobody wants war except mad men. Old men like to play games with young mens lives. Best advice is to stop reading about it and focus on something else. The future is unknown and the world usually keeps spinning. You could move to Australia and get bitten by a poisonous snake. Life is fragile for all of us, best not to focus on what ifs. Thanks

Libraryghost · 24/02/2022 20:26

In the 70s one woman actually killed her children and herself because she was that convinced nuclear war was coming - and of course it didn't. Stay away from media.

Dinosaurs1994 · 24/02/2022 20:28

A (very selfish granted) part of me wishes Ukraine would just surrender.

Millions of lives could be lost throughout this and for what?

Ukraine's leader has been urging the civilians to take up arms and fight. Civilians for fuck sake.

People say Putin won't be satisfied with Ukraine and will push on and on, so wait for him to try it with a NATO country and then get involved. Not now.

The crazy bastard is threatening us with nuclear war. I'm sorry but any well intended loyalty to Ukraine shouldn't come before our own countries safety.

I'm gob smacked that the UK is getting involved at all in light of such threats.

Boris is an idiot. Does he not care about his family?

I know none of this is right, but those are my thoughts along with praying somebody takes him out first

Ciaram55 · 24/02/2022 20:31

I kind of feel reassured that the fact he warns of these consequences that he wouldn't follow them through. If he did intend to do that why would he warn us.

Libraryghost · 24/02/2022 20:31

We tried appeasing Hitler by basically giving him Czechoslovakia and look how that turned out. The trouble is megalomaniacs will not stop, we have to take action because the consequences will be even more dire if we don't.

Libraryghost · 24/02/2022 20:32

@Ciaram55 oh believe me he means it, he is a mad bastard.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/02/2022 20:32

Russia has been dicking about its borders for all of my life, and all of my parents' lives. They are a bad country to be next to, but this is just more of what they do. It is not the beginning of the apocalypse.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 24/02/2022 20:33

We’re part of NATO. We can’t not be involved.
