Just sitting here wfh freezing in my dressing gown & wondering what life would be like being married to a handsome ogliarch.. I can imagine myself living in Kingingston, kids in the best private schools, posh restaurants, travelling the world whenever...! Lighthearted by the way, love my dh😍

You're familiar with the expression "gilded cage", right?

Herani · 15/02/2022 12:49

I'd never presume they'd be remotely loyal or faithful. Can you imagine the oligarch groupies? I have a couple of friends who are married to insanely rich partners and the pressure to stay ridiculously thin and young is real.

Kidnap risk...

No, you'd never worry about the leccy bill.

You may, of course, worry about ending up sleeping with the fishes...

I'm with you OP. In my head his name is Dimitri and he looks like an older version of Jon Snow, with the sexy Russian accent Grin

The best part would be the divorce settlement!

hihellohihello · 15/02/2022 12:52

Scary. People don't get that rich and powerful by accident. Have you read / seen the documentaries about Alexandra Tolstoy-Miloslavsky?

Honestly, the wives and girlfriends of ultra-rich men I had most contact with a few years back not Russian, but UK-based for part of the year, homes in Knightsbridge, two estates in the home counties, one with a rather gorgeous Palladian house, one devoted entirely to their polo ponies, helicopters, owned a premier league club, fleets of staff, incredible wealth etc etc seemed very bored and disengaged. Their lives, as far as I could see, were a featureless blur of expensively beige interiors and shopping, and transport between the two in expensively-upholstered forms of transport. I'm not even sure they were aware of what country they were in all the time, because it didn't make that much difference.

I was all prepared to rabidly envy them I'd been on one of the estates in Berkshire just before I met any of them, and was wowed by how gorgeous it was, and I've always thought I'd be very good at being very rich but I genuinely came away thinking 'Those women are bored by their own lives, and at least I'm interested in mine.'

Anniegetyourgun76 · 15/02/2022 12:57

I'd imagine the fantasy is better than the reality unfortunately. A gilded cage is still a cage.

ComtesseDeSpair · 15/02/2022 12:58

My friend is a Russian oligarch - or his father is, anyway. They’re both called Dmitry. I think Dmitry Senior is former KGB and I don’t think I’d want to be married to him, but Dmitry Junior is lovely.

This anecdote is adding nothing to the discussion, I’m aware.

I'd say there would be a water tight prenup😭

I mean, I'm sure there are lots of happy, rich women I don't see why there wouldn't be but these women weren't. They reminded me of myself on anti-depressants, with everything a bit dulled, but in their case by wealth cushioning them, not drugs. I think everything seemed a bit samey to them -- they seemed like people looking out the window at a landscape that didn't interest them much.

Cleanbedlinen12 · 15/02/2022 13:07

Phew!

If they decide to divorce you for whatever reason, they can take away your children and you will never see your kids again.

I personally wouldn't want to be married to a Russian oligarch. A European/American billionaire on the other hand... 🙃

Wheres Kingsington?
LaBellina · 15/02/2022 13:25

You wouldn’t have the worry about your utilities bills but you would have to worry about your DH having endless possibilities to cheat with much younger & more beautiful women then you, people only being interested in being your friend so they can use you for your money/connections, risk of your DC and you being kidnapped, I read years ago that many rich women are terrified of becoming poor and have frequent nightmares about it. Also it seems pretty boring to me to be able to buy and do everything you like without thinking twice and the effect this has on your DC too. Basically you’re completely out of touch with reality…I think if I were that rich I would keep enough money to have a comfortable lifestyle but would end up feeling guilty for being so rich and end up donating the majority of my money to animal welfare, homeless people, and investing in facilities to make poor people’s life easier.

mibbelucieachwell · 15/02/2022 13:30

Your security guards would probably be well fit.

😁😁😁 Eye candy for all the mums on the school run... However I guess the dc would have to go to boarding school to fit in with our jet set lifestyle unless I had a tutor for them of courseWink

My Russian friend is super rich and she’s the most unhappy woman I know. The slightest little thing that isn’t perfect in her life seems to piss her off.
