What expensive purchase do you regret spending money on?

Or purchases, whatever it was you spent money on and was so expensive, why do you regret it? Impulse purchase in the heat of the moment? I think the most expensive things I regret spending money on are expensive beauty products which I didn't need. I enjoy using them, but regret spending precious money on them. What expensive things do you regret spending money on?

All of the designer handbags and shoes. Could have put a deposit down. Have a great wardrobe to hand down to DD but I wear the same Dior, MCM and Alexander Wang bags everyday. So no point having the others. Givenchy so heavy!!! Plus after baby my feet have changed so none of them fit anyway Blush

DH bought me a Celine dress for bday one year as I had said I liked it on a celeb. Urgh, it looks awful on my body shape so I never wear it. It just sits on a hanger and every time we have an event to go to (not often) he suggests I wear it which makes me cringe

Shadedog · 12/02/2022 23:25

@littlesnowdropfairy it doesn’t work. If you don’t charge the battery every 3 months then it essentially breaks. I’ve only kept it because there is a way of fixing it by forcing apart the casing, disconnecting the old battery from the circuit board and making a new battery pack and soldering it on. I’m almost certainly never going to do this but I’m reluctant to chuck it. I even kept it through my big Marie Kondo push of 2017. My advice is don’t by a second hand one because if the owner hasn’t been regularly charging it you will also need a soldering iron. If they are selling it they probably haven’t been charging it.

I am the queen of useless, expensive buys. Some have been:

Burberry Mac - wanted to look all sophisticated and Parisienne. It made me look like a tree trunk. Sold it after a year, wore it twice so £400 per wear.

Slender tone bum shorts. I suspected they over promised, and indeed they did. Completely useless.

Trinity NuFace. £300 and no perceptible difference at all.

I paid £500 for a session of NLP when I was having debilitating panic attacks. The guy promised to cure them. Guess what, he didn’t. I was in my 20s and on a low wage so I really felt that one, but I was desperate.

Veja Roraima high tops. The most uncomfortable shoes I have ever owned, they live in my wardrobe after the first wear.

And my current bugbear, I paid the dentist for a teeth whitening course. Got the moulds done etc. I can’t actually use it as the gel gives me shooting nerve pain after 30 minutes, it’s torture. Am seeing the dentist next week to see what can be done, otherwise that’s £350 down the drain.

I’m usually a bargain hunter and get some great stuff in charity shops and the sales. It’s when I decide to treat myself it all goes wrong…

On the other hand, I love my Philips Lumea and Babyliss Big Hair!

Our house.

But only because we bought it pre covid and could easily afford it but post covid it's a huge struggle and feels like a huge burden.

I used to love it and was so proud of us, felt like we'd finally "made it" all our hard work paying off but now I get so cross just cleaning it and wishing it was easier and cheaper.

Am I the only one who goes hmmmm at all the Dyson hate on MN? Dyson products are far superior to most of their cheaper competitors. Yes they’re expensive but if you can afford it why settle for anything less?

I just imagine anti-Dyson bot farms churning out the hate on behalf of Babyliss and Hoover 😂😉🤣🤭

😉😉

I hate Dyson hoovers.I've not tried the hair stuff! TBH I hate most hoovers I've bought (which is plenty because I used to have obsessive hoovering tendencies when my anxiety was bad). I've given up and gone back to Henry and his stupid falling over fat ass.

Wedding day. Total waste as turns out I a married a lying cheating piece of shit

I'm more hmmmmm at the Dyson lovers. I used the Air Wrap and it was an appalling waste of money.

A fool and his money are soon parted and all that 😂😂😂😂

House extension. Doubled our mortgage to fund it and then 90s recession hit. Enjoyed it but I am now left alone due to divorce with an unmanageable house too big for me and not nearly enough equity to sell and be OK.
Designer bags seem so much more unregrettable.

Cocolapew · 13/02/2022 00:01

Not overly expensive but dear enough for me at the time. Years ago the style and beauty board on here were raving about a Chanel foundation. I decided to treat myself to it, it was around £30. It was awful, I looked like I had been embalmed, it was the strangest texture.

Mumblechum0 · 13/02/2022 00:04

A Chagall at a charity auction. Don’t even like it, I was just getting the bidding going but no one else bidded 😟

WeBurnedSoBrightWeBurnedOut · 13/02/2022 00:09

@blessings2022

Really? I have invisalign at the moment and it's been the best money i've ever spent!

pawpaws2022 · 13/02/2022 00:21

@WhyPaulMemory sensodyne rapid relief is the only toothpaste that works for me with whitening pain. Brush with it, smear it on, do whatever you need to!
I use zoom day white which needs much less time and doesn't seem to aggravate

SuperSocks · 13/02/2022 00:30

Another even crazier one - £300 on a replica Victorian dress for a murder mystery party!! It was a fun party but I was very overdressed compared to everyone else. It's a size 8 and as I've been hovering between a 14 and 16 for years I think it's safe to say it's unusable now! But the bloody corset was made to fit so I can't even sell it!

AutomaticMoon · 13/02/2022 00:34

@HunterHearstHelmsley Same, both my Dyson products are hugely overpriced disappointments!

allfurcoatnoknickers · 13/02/2022 00:37

Very, VERY expensive white/black/grey wool rug in a geometric pattern. I loved it so much.

One day DH and I had to be out for a long stretch, so booked our dog walker to take the dogs out for a lengthy walk...and he didn't show up and the dogs peed and pooed on the rug and ruined it. Couldn't get the stains or the smell out and had to chuck it.

MistyElla · 13/02/2022 00:45

Hydrafacial was a huge ripoff. My skin was terrible for weeks afterwards. Never again.

LikeABreathRipplingBy · 13/02/2022 00:54

A woodstore and 6 tonnes of firewood for the wood burning stove we never got round to buying. Just had to pay somebody to take half of it away. The rest is still sitting outside.

An original Marc Chagall? Wow! Which one?

I love my Dyson have one downstairs and another upstairs.
Topseyt · 13/02/2022 02:44

Mine is my heated clothes airer, as some seem to rave about on here.

I never use it now. Far too big, runs at 5p an hour - if it is on overnight that is 50 - 60p, so might as well have just run the tumble dryer for 90 minutes. Waste of £100.

yorkshireteaspoonie · 13/02/2022 03:45

Invisalign - still ended up with three years of fixed braces after

GHD rise hot brush - just created a massive tangled mess and pulled loads of hair out (the £18 GHD heat spray was also a waste it smells disgusting like 90's teenage girl perfume RANK 🤢)

Phillips lumea - I could not stand the flashing lights

I love my cordless dyson it's so much lighter than and other cordless

And the revlon 'one step' hair dryer/ brush takes about ten mins for completely dry silky frizz free hair for only £40 compared to the £400 dyson

torquewench · 13/02/2022 03:46

Gym membership. Joined one that's conveniently on my route to work. I drive past it twice a day.

Dyson vac - tiny cannister + 3 cats = ballache to use. I emptied it yesterday and all the crap blew over me and into my face.

Air Wrap - sent it back to qvc after trying and failing miserably with it for 60 days.

Philips Lumea - ebayed it as it made zero difference.

I do love my Dyson Hairdryer and Babylis big hair though and use them every day.

HappydaysArehere · 13/02/2022 04:36

Another Dyson avoider. Worst vacuum cleaner I have ever had. Had sparks coming out of it so ditched it and bought my long lasting and wonderful Sebo.
Food processor sitting unused while I use a hand beater and hand blender/chopper.
Expensive ice cream maker.
