What expensive purchase do you regret spending money on?

Or purchases, whatever it was you spent money on and was so expensive, why do you regret it? Impulse purchase in the heat of the moment? I think the most expensive things I regret spending money on are expensive beauty products which I didn't need. I enjoy using them, but regret spending precious money on them. What expensive things do you regret spending money on?

Some designer handbags weigh a ton and are totally impractical, I got one for a birthday and Christmas present ( too much for just one gift ) its lovely soooo lovely and not too heavy. See by Chloe, not in the mulberry league but its lovely

I decided it would be a good idea to buy a hot tub during lockdown. It was a cheer me up present as had to postpone my wedding twice.

Had it 15months and sold it as i got pregnant and never used it. Cost a bomb in electric & chemicals!

CoalTit · 13/02/2022 15:52

@Motherofgorgons If your rugs have fringes the Roomba will get tangled up in them.

Onlyhereforthebiscuits · 13/02/2022 16:16

Designer glasses (as in spectacles not drinking glasses).

Such a waste of money. The day I after I bought my £300 Chanel frames I met a friend who had also bought new glasses....identical to mine. They looked great! Except hers cost £60 in boots....

I was an idiot.

TatianaBis · 13/02/2022 16:33

That can go either way - I have super expensive glasses - but they're worth every penny - rimless, ultra-light, cat eye - not something you can get in Boots.

ChocolateDeficitDisorder · 13/02/2022 16:35

Dyson products are far superior to most of their cheaper competitors.

Rubbish. My DH insists on buying Dyson hoovers so we have an upright and a corded. They're awful - constantly whining and clogging and I can't get a whole room done before they need to be tinkered with. Junk.

Shuttheblinds · 13/02/2022 16:36

If anybody wants to sell their Philips Lumea please message me!

I have had a few Mulberry bags and loved them all apart from my Bayswater, agree it is just too heavy.

Mine is probably shoes. The amount of expensive shoes I have bought that hurt too much to wear them is mad. Only last November I bought some loafers from Russell and Bromley that are gorgeous but kill me and some Vionic boots that I bought based on the reviews of them being comfy and a bit on the large side so size down. I did. They are too small!

DilemmaDelilah · 13/02/2022 16:50

Not too expensive -and it was a present so we didn't actually pay for it.... but membership for our local theatre for Christmas 2019. It would have given us access to cheap tickets and better seats for a whole year! except it was 2020 and there was no theatre to speak of for well over a year 😞

"I also don't 'get' why anyone pays £400+ for a pair of glasses! You can get good/decent ones online for less than £50, or as a pp said"

I didn't buy a frame that cost that much. It's adding the price of the glass that makes it difficult, then they need to be thinned down twice or I'd be wearing jam jars.
I wouldn't buy glasses online because I think it's so important to try them on in real life. I've worn my current glasses every day for 15 years so I have to be sure before buying.

Gwenhwyfar · 13/02/2022 17:35
@Gwenhwyfar ah fair enough. Don't beat yourself up re being more assertive. They're something you'll use every day and get a lot of wear out of over the next few years.

I'm at a very strong prescription so without my glasses on can see v little. It was one of the reasons I went to asda, I knew the price of the frames were all in the fixed £120 so couldn't unwittingly wander into a v expensive section, that and the thinning of my prescription included.

Glasses can be incredibly expensive especially for complicated prescriptions and it's not like it's something you can just do without. I'd had my last pair for 6 years. The pure joy at putting on the new ones and not having a wee scratch mark was great. I hope you enjoy your new glasses Smile
Thanks. I've had a pair of rimless glasses for about 15 years so really not sure how much I will like these new frames. It will be a huge change!

RosesAndHellebores · 13/02/2022 17:54

I've thought of something else. Slippers. We spend so much time wearing them and accept they have no arch support, even some of the trendy, expensive ones.

I have given up and now wear Josef Siebel Betsy Clogs. Birkie slippers hurt me. Totes are OK but the arch support doesn't last last a wash.

Sorry wrong thread!

La mer face cream, hand cream etc. waste of money.

A visually stunning barn conversion we bought just after DD1 was born. Cathedral ceiling and double staircases in the hall. Huge inglenook fireplace that you could stand up in. Acres of York stone flooring everywhere. Much too big. Much too echoey. Much too cold (boiler wasn't nearly big enough).

I knew within 2 days that we had made a horribly expensive mistake - it was like living in York fucking Minster. It took me another 4 years to persuade DH to sell though, but at least we made £125K on it!

Really sorry to read your post about your DH. That must have been so hard x

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 13/02/2022 21:12

I’ve just spent nearly £400 on a pair of Fairfax & Favor boots that dig in the back of my knees. Had to size up to fit my wide feet but clearly my legs are too short and the boots are uncomfortable to sit down in. Have read lots of reviews about what an awful fit they are, very inconsistent and difficult for some to actually even get on. Would have bought some more as they’re very nice looking but daren’t in case they fit even worse.

shiningstar2 · 13/02/2022 21:23

A rater expensive state of the art running machine from John Lewis. Love walking but not in the winter. Hate being cold. Was going to use it for some much needed winter exercise , starting with walking and building up to running 😁 Used once and as well as the expense it takes up a massive amount of room and making the spare bedroom an unattractive proposition for anybody staying ,😮

StartingGrid · 13/02/2022 21:26

I feel like we need a thread for all the unloved Bayswaters to find a new home - I have two and use them daily! I do have a Commes des Garcons bag I've only ever used once though, its very kitsch and impractical Hmm

Also regret buying a pair of Chanel sunglasses as I lost them within 6 months!

A smeg fridge, all style and no substance
Dyson vacuums x 2, absolute crap!
Shark vacuum, rubbish broke repeatedly

Poetrypatty · 13/02/2022 22:26

Neom pod thingy. Really dislike it and the oil smell is too strong for me plus it always seems to need charging. Also once bought a sofa I was already having second thoughts about as soon as I'd paid. Hated the colour and fabric and only kept it a few weeks.
