What expensive purchase do you regret spending money on?

Or purchases, whatever it was you spent money on and was so expensive, why do you regret it? Impulse purchase in the heat of the moment? I think the most expensive things I regret spending money on are expensive beauty products which I didn't need. I enjoy using them, but regret spending precious money on them. What expensive things do you regret spending money on?

@VodselForDinner

My Mulberry Bayswater handbag. Lovely looking bag but so heavy it’s just impractical for my needs.

Think I’ve used it twice and now it’s sitting all forlornly in its dust bag in my wardrobe.

Sell it ! You will still get a decent return on it and perhaps buy something else that does not give you buyers remorse

Absolutely useless masters degree in my late 20s. I later went to law school. Should've gone right to law school. The masters programme was weak and my advisor sucked.

ValBiro · 12/02/2022 22:56

Knotty ones cardigan, £200. I really really want to love it as much as I should for that price. It is heavy. And the arms are so baggy that when I am doing any domestic chores they end up getting in the way/dirty/wet. It looks nice but just isn't practical for daily life!

@Itshothothot
Miele washing machine rubbish for the price. Got a cheaper one now and it's so much better. X

@KylieKoKo

I'm attempting to fast tomorrow as it's that or a b2b next week. Is anyone else mad enough to fast on a weekend or just me?
Wrong thread Grin

@NutellaEllaElla

Pretty much all kitchen gadgets. Air fryer, slow cooker, rice cooker. They're all a faff to use, clean and take up to much space.
Not really expensive, but my spiraliser reproaches me every time I see it gathering dust at the back of the cupboard.

Remember the 'Deliciously Ella' courgetti phase? No, I don't either.

A large framed paparazzi black and white photograph of Madonna in the 90s.

I loved it on first glance. but I had been drinking. When I handed over the cash the photographer pointed out Guy Ritchie and I immediately was flooded with regret.

£250

I told my partner it was 100 Blush

mowly77 · 12/02/2022 22:59

It’s under my bed because I still can’t face up to what I did. Been almost a year

JudgeJ · 12/02/2022 22:59

@Itshothothot

Miele washing machine (had loads of issues with it)

Wool rugs (they never stopped shedding)

Trampoline (barely used)

Bosch cordless hoover

Loads of high end beauty products

Lazer hair removal

I'm on my second Miele washing machine in 40 years, probably just jinxed it though!

Bissell Spotclean pro. I’ve used it once… it’s loud, takes ages to set up and then to clean it after and put away, cleaning solution is expensive, takes a long time to clean a small area. Not worth it just use a carpet cleaning solution and a cloth it works the same.

Very expensive (but on sale) dressage saddle - didn’t have a horse. Brought one and of course it didn’t fit. Pahh.

Horsebox which couldn’t be towed loaded without a full fat Range Rover - we had an Astra.

Hot tub - especially with electric going up. I can hear it now whirling away on its own in the dark. Grrrr.

Love my Lumea tho ! And my cordless Dyson.

Shit heap of a campervan which pretty much ruined our 6 month trip by breaking down at the worst moments possible (up a mountain in Morocco, on a 6 lane flyover in Italy, in the middle of Barcelona). In the end we were so sick of it we gave it to a local in Crete and bought a tent!

Trendy reportage wedding photos. Not sure who I thought I was tbh.

Vivienne Westwood dress, albeit in the sale, that was just a tiny bit too tight but I told myself I would lose a tiny bit of weight and it would be fine. Have never worn it and now it's got sun damage from my poor storage.

£3k on an online college art course for DC. There was nothing suitable locally, so it was this or nothing. I couldn't manage to find anyone who'd done this particular course to check if it was any good. We did talk to several friends whose teens had done a different art course at the same college and found it quite good, but they highlighted the weaselly nature of the college administrators.

Unfortunately DC's course was an absolute shambles. More than half of the tutors appeared to have no knowledge whatsoever. All were overworked. Assignments were poorly specified, wasting many hours of students' time trying to find out what they were meant to do, and often they got no feedback. And the administrators really were weasels!

I had collected evidence from the outset in case I might decide to stop paying on the grounds of breach of contract, but there wasn't a clear breach of contract. It was just quite crap. So I kept making payments for a year after DC had dropped out, my blood boiling with every bank statement!

DC returned to independent study and did land on their feet, getting onto an excellent university course a year later on the back of portfolio and relevant work. So at least it didn't blight their life.

Hot tub Impulse purchase and now cannot use it for medical reasons. Packed up in the garage, utterly pointless!

SocksAndTheCity · 12/02/2022 23:04

A fixer-upper of a flat that I spent £20K or so getting fixed up and ready to sell in February 2020, so just in time for viewings to be stopped and then everybody to decide they wanted a garden.

Paid bills and council tax on it while it sat empty as well as current home until September 2021 when finally managed to sell it for £10K less than I paid for it in the first place.

RovenderKitt · 12/02/2022 23:07

Audi A3 Convertible. Looked lovely but was a heap of shit. Spent a fortune getting it constantly repaired. Didn’t help that our local Audi garage are a shoddy bunch of cowboys - they used to visibly cower when I walked in 😂

ValBiro · 12/02/2022 23:07

@SocksAndTheCity Ouch! That must sting. Blimmin' covid!

I think this sort of thing happens to every hot tub owner to be fair. I still want one though. Hot tub Madness

A Victorian plumbing bathroom. Quality is appalling and customer service is non existent. Never again.

Nocutenamesleft · 12/02/2022 23:13

@Fiftysixthnamechange

Dyson hairdryer, I don't get it, am I missing something?! It's crap, leaves my hair Crispy too.
Ooh. If you sell it. Please let me know!!
StellaGibs · 12/02/2022 23:16

The Babyliss Big Hair is the only thing in my house I look at and get angry about. I've no idea why it gets such good reviews.

justasking111 · 12/02/2022 23:24

Huge D bath in our new house, takes 20 minutes to get enough water to sit in, uncomfortable to lie back in. Used it once. Would have come out but it's a brand new bathroom other jobs ahead of that project
