AIBU to say that people in the “real world” absolutely do care about Downing Street parties?

According to Mark Spencer MP, the new leader of the House of Commons, people don’t care about partygate because what really matters to them is their jobs, NHS backlogs and energy prices.

Personally I am capable of caring about all of those AND being incensed by the “do what I say not what I do” attitude of certain members of the Government and its officials.

YABU = of course nobody cares, move on

YANBU = it absolutely matters that they told us one thing and did another themselves.

I do
It shows them to be hypocritical and lacking integrity
Its insulting to suggest because it was a workplace that what they were up to was reasonable - it wasnt!!

SilkySusan · 09/02/2022 19:05

I don't care about the parties per se. I do care - a lot - about the dishonesty, the lying, the coverups. I won't be voting Tory again.

BrocolliHamster · 09/02/2022 19:07

They think we're too stupid to be able to hold multiple grievances in our heads at once.

roarfeckingroarr · 09/02/2022 19:08

Some do. I couldn't care less and neither could any of my friends.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 09/02/2022 19:09

I can deffo multitask when it comes to ‘caring’

I can be pissed off about a lot of things at the same time

Whingasaurus · 09/02/2022 19:09

I don't really care its annoying but I think they are all the same tbh, the only people in my social circle who do are die hard lefties so they'd find something. Chatting in a shop the other day and not one person cared. I think there's been so much stupid shit thrown around, eh wallpapergate that it's all lost any impact.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 09/02/2022 19:11

I do. Everyone I know cares because we remember lockdown and how hard that lack of social interaction was. My 7 year old saw me looking at the news the other day so I explained about Partygate in a kid friendly way, and she was outraged that Boris had a birthday party when she's had to miss two. She definitely cares!

Itsnotdeep · 09/02/2022 19:11

I think it's hugely depressing if people don't care. They completely should.

SFisnotsimple · 09/02/2022 19:13

Spin

Of course everyone cares

Everyone cares that they couldn't hug loved ones, mental health spiralled downwards, couldn't attend funerals of loved ones, couldn't see dying relatives. Whilst people partied on in Westminster.

Of course we fucking care

Sick and tired of this corrupt gvmt but not enough to roll over and say move on

Outraged and always will be

Mia85 · 09/02/2022 19:13

I have no particular political allegiance but care deeply about this.

A country with no respect for law or democracy is a dangerous place to be. He appears to have contempt for both and so is not fit to be prime minister.

SweetFelicityArkright · 09/02/2022 19:14

It's another layer of dishonesty and corruption as far as I'm concerned, and shows their lack of integrity and how much they disregard us - the people they're supposed to work in the best interests of.
They don't even appear to care that we know and a lot of people are unhappy about it, I get the 'What are you actually going to do about it vibe from it all the arrogance is astounding.

You must live in a place where no one is engaged with politics and probably don't even vote! or you're a Tory bot
elfycat · 09/02/2022 19:17

I care that while many of us were following the flipping rules, trying our best to flatten curves, avoid needing NHS care, missing family, remembering why I hate doing a big weekly shop etc, they were sneaking around doing whatever they wanted.

While people were stressed to the point of being brittle in temperament, the police telling walkers off, cancelling weddings and funerals, and people actually dying of this illness, they were having parties.

And then standing in the heart of government and lying about it. Lying because they knew it was wrong. Sorry because they got caught. Non apologies abound. DARVO at government level.

I care. I have many other things in my life, but I care about this.

DENMAN03 · 09/02/2022 19:17

I don't really care about the parties if I'm honest. Just not something I can be bothered to get het up about.

Sideswiped · 09/02/2022 19:19

Maybe I'm being a cynic, but I don't think it's a coincidence that Bojo announced the dropping of restrictions today.
How stupid do the tories think the voting masses are?

Titterofwit · 09/02/2022 19:20

I do not have an allegiance to any particular party and i am incensed by this
Its the sheer arrogance of them laughing at us all doing as we were told while they carried on their lives as normal.

Onlyforcake · 09/02/2022 19:20

I find it infuriating. They deliberately put out the blame game onto the public "if people follow the rules" "protect others". And they had absolutely no intention of taking responsibility for themselves because they have no sense of duty, respect for others. Just the attitude that they are literally special, different and above. I'd happily storm parliament and get shot as a terrorist right now. I'm looking to revolt like the peasant they take me for.

PuzzledObserver · 09/02/2022 19:21

It’s as if they think that if they just keep on saying it’s no big deal (and while they’re about it: reshuffle the cabinet, misrepresent multiple resignations as acting on Sue Grey’s report and announce the early removal of compulsory isolation), that it will become true. If they just keep on repeating the lie enough times, we’ll believe it.

The thing that bothers me is that they may just be right.

FindmeuptheFarawaytree · 09/02/2022 19:22

I do. I think it's an insult that they are still trying to brush this under the carpet. I also think drinking except a glass with dinner etc should be banned whilst they are working, not to mention that I don't think alcohol should be a claimable expense. Sickening behaviour.

VladmirsPoutine · 09/02/2022 19:22

I'm not particularly bothered about the parties per se but I am in that it's what finally broke the camels back iyswim? Many things that the tories had done hitherto didn't affect their supporters and a great deal of the public - so things like refusing to provide free school meals for kids, cutting the £20 uplift, windrush deportations, granting contracts worth millions to their mates etc etc didn't seem to have any impact as most tory supporters aren't affected by these issues. But they were incensed that the government / officials were getting off their tits whilst they had to follow the rules. So in a way I do care but only that finally the tide has turned.

VikingOnTheFridge · 09/02/2022 19:23

What he actually means is that he wishes we didn't. He'll have seen the polls.

Why be so rude? Honestly it says so much about you that a very valid opinion held by many elicits such nastiness.

CorrBlimeyGG · 09/02/2022 19:24

Mark Spencer lied to the Queen. His offices are in the same building as the local food bank, which he never donates to. The man has zero moral compass.

I care about all the things he mentions, the fact that nothing is being done to address them, and all the lies too. I can care about more than one thing at once.

CorrBlimeyGG · 09/02/2022 19:27

The Met are now considering opening an investigation into the decorating issue, as there is evidence that anti bribery laws were broken.

ufucoffee · 09/02/2022 19:28

I couldn't give a shit about the parties and neither do the majority of my family and friends. They all agree there are more important things for the govt to be getting on with. The only friend I have who is bothered stayed in during lockdowns because she was so scared.
