Why aren't we building home out at see?

There's a population crisis and a lack of affordable homes and space to build etc so how come more countries don't build out from their coasts, or actually out at see. Watching the world spin and virtually a solid half is just sea! Why aren't more countries claiming territory and building their own extensions?

Were you turbot powered? I’ll have to knock you off your perch and poacher ideas.

NYnewstart · 09/02/2022 21:39

Nicola Sturgeon might be up for the concept of building in the sea. She might snapper the idea up. If anyone can mackerel it happen, she will. She likes to skate where others flounder. She’s a right old shark.

NYnewstart · 09/02/2022 22:49

As for Boris, eel be no good. He’s a right clown(fish).

That’s enough politics for minnow.

Loving the puns but to put some context on reclaiming land from the sea. A county park called Samphire Hoe at Dover, which is about 75 acres was created using 7 million tonnes of chalk marl that was dug out when creating the channel tunnel. To get any sizeable land would literally mean moving a mountain.

Notjustanymum · 09/02/2022 23:16

Wait, what? Why hasn’t anyone thought of that before?
I mean, ships haven’t exactly proved to be less safe than houses on dry land in the millennia preceding this one - or have they?
Tides, Weather, St. Elmo’s Fire, lack of Fresh Water might give you a clue, OP… and that’s just for starters!

Norgie · 09/02/2022 23:23

So, you build a house on the sea, a houseboat?
You go to bed in the English channel and you wake up halfway to France.
Imagine phoning your boss to explain why you're going to be late for work?

onlychildhamster · 09/02/2022 23:30

@Norgie this hotel was built on reclaimed land, so no it doesn't need to be a houseboat!

@lemongrasstea

Where would the floor be??? Would it be floating or dredge up miles of sea bed and try to concrete it??? Mad as a hatter!
And yet it has been done successfully in many countries, Gibraltar, Dubai, Singapore, Netherlands to name a few. Not mad at all.

Boats don't have a problem with tides, that's why they have sails/engines. Most boats can cope with F9s. Water makers are not expensive and convert sea water to freshwater, lots of yachts have them including mine.
NatashaBedwouldbenice · 10/02/2022 07:52

Yep, that's it, a typo on see/sea is obviously a sign I'm very thick and should in fact relinquish control of the keyboard.

😬

Come on, no one is this thick. Half term started early?

Don’t be mean OP has admitted to being a sleep deprived mum of toddlers. We’ve all had odd ideas in her shoes - I swear I saw Elvis once at 3am

Given how much of Jan was spent at home with covid so the 6 yo at home, I'd be going even more crazy if half term was early!! I'll quite gladly push it back against Easter!

Thank you @Hoppinggreen, also jacked up on to much Go Jetters 😂
