Why aren't we building home out at see?

There's a population crisis and a lack of affordable homes and space to build etc so how come more countries don't build out from their coasts, or actually out at see. Watching the world spin and virtually a solid half is just sea! Why aren't more countries claiming territory and building their own extensions?

Where would the floor be??? Would it be floating or dredge up miles of sea bed and try to concrete it??? Mad as a hatter!

JuergenSchwarzwald · 08/02/2022 17:33

We can't just go building on everything and expecting this to be fine

We can bring old housing back into use, reuse brownfield sites, and have fewer children.

I think all of those things are better than trying to reclaim land from the sea.

TonytheDog · 08/02/2022 17:36

This sounds a bite fishy 🐟 🏠

DungballInADress · 08/02/2022 17:45

In a world where the sea level is rising, let's build our homes out at sea? The housing crisis is not about lack of space for new homes, it's about the fact that house prices have risen astronomically, while wages have not and the amount of deposit to purchase a home is now also significant. This is not about not enough land, this is about even those with good jobs and decent incomes not being able to afford to buy homes.

This feels very much like the song you used to sing at school about the wise man building his house upon the rock and the fool builds his house on the sand....

I get sea sick.

GoodbyeKat · 08/02/2022 17:49

lapasion · 08/02/2022 17:49

Did you get high while watching Waterworld?

FrippEnos · 08/02/2022 17:53

17% of the Netherlands is reclaimed from the sea and lakes.

Its the reasons that had so many windmills as they were used to pump excess water from saturated land.

Floating, I'm not suggesting we drain the Indian Ocean and bottle the water 🌊💦

As sea levels rise quite a few settlement will be out at sea. Bit moist though.

This is EXACTLY the kind of thing Trump would have asked (and probably did), except you seem to be nicer and more fun than him Grin

Anyway, watch Waterworld OP. They did this and just spent the entire film bitching about wanting to be on land. Except Kevin Costner, but he had gills and flippers.

SleepingStandingUp · 08/02/2022 17:55

Re retirees sailing on ocean cruises all year, sounds fabulous!

Sometimes it's good to have a think about stuff yourself before putting it out to a wider audience.

Somethingsnappy · 08/02/2022 18:04

"a solid half is just sea"

GrinGrin

Is it solid though, OP?

How would you get to Tesco?

iklboo · 08/02/2022 18:11

Someone was trying to flog me a timeshare in a wardrobe. When I asked who the owner was he said 'Narnia business'.

Let’s build on the thousands of hectares of brownfield sites all over the country which are currently sitting waiting to be developed before we spend billions on reclaiming land from the sea.

Kennykenkencat · 08/02/2022 18:14

We could always strap barges and other boat like structures together and then build flexible “pavements” over the boats with bigger boats moored at the side to create floating streets.

Or strap together loads of plastic water. bottles to create the base of the walkway.

I think trying to build a stable structure out at sea is a major feat of engineering because under the sea is usually sand which isn’t what you would consider to be the most stable of foundations and to dig down to find rock is just too expensive
