Periods at nearly 55, am I alone?

itstimeforme · 06/02/2022 16:18

Posting for traffic, aibu to ask if anyone else is still having or had periods at nearly 55? I have the odd gap of a month or two with night sweats and other peri symptoms but they keep returning to the regular 4 week pattern. All my friends were done by 50/51! Is there an age when I should seek a medical opinion Confused

Dunno. Will be 53 soon and had one last month - the third since I came off the pill last summer. The last few months I’ve produced a lot of EWCM as well, which I think is a sign of ovulating isn’t it?

Derrymum123 · 06/02/2022 16:24

Nope,57 and still as regular as clockwork. I actually envy people at work who have had menopause and are period free. Dr no help at all with over 10 years of flooding and chronic anaemia. Seems to think it will be OK soon enough when menopause kicks in.

BethDutton · 06/02/2022 16:28

Me! I am 55 in a couple of months and still having a period every month. Never had a gap. It is deadly dull! I will pass on my sisters (2 years older) helpful comment which was identical to my oldest dearest friends helpful comment (18 months older) “really I finished ages ago when I was 51!” followed by a reproving look. DH has given up. I am grateful they are painfree and the flooding from a year ago has stopped. That was the worst. Haven’t sought medical advice, I generally avoid doctors and hospitals.

AnyFucker · 06/02/2022 16:28

God, you poor things

Igmum · 06/02/2022 16:29

Yup. I'm 57 and only stopped my periods a couple of years ago. All done now. I think my mum was the same - periods until she was about 54 - and one of her relatives had a surprise baby at age 50 back in the 1920s.

BethDutton · 06/02/2022 16:30

Thanks AnyFucker, feeling very sorry for Derrymum123 kinda wish I hadn’t read that!

Tricked2003 · 06/02/2022 16:31

I'm 54 and have had regular periods for the last few years..........before that I had NEVER had regular periods in my life, often going 7/8/9 weeks. It's like a cruel joke................

DramaAlpaca · 06/02/2022 16:32

God no, I got a Mirena when I wzs 46 when my periods started going bonkers and never had another one. I'm 57 now. I really feel for you all still having them in your mid-50s.

Mary46 · 06/02/2022 16:35

Thats very draining ladies. I dont have them as coil in. Im 49. Had v bad periods. Im not sure how I be when this coil out as its my 3rd. I dont miss the bleeding though

corlan · 06/02/2022 16:38

55 and a half and still regular. Feels like I've been stuck in perimenopause for 10 years.

SoupDragon · 06/02/2022 16:40

Me.

My mum was in her late 50s so I don't hold out much home for mine disappearing soon.

Only this morning I was pondering how much better the world would be if we could put periods under our conscious control.

itstimeforme · 06/02/2022 16:46

Thank you everyone, I feel for you all though it's very reassuring for me! DH has run out of things to say and I'm the only one out of all my friends of the same age who is still going strong. They are heavy but not quite as bad as previously. When I went to get a scan recently the scanner said she had scanned many pregnant 50 somethings Shock. I'm trying to be patient and I know that they will end eventually but at the moment I just want them gone!!

My mum was 58 and had been peri since early 40s.....I suspect I will be the same (sobs).

Mary46 · 06/02/2022 16:54

Jesus I collapse if I was pregnant (49)Grin

SeasonFinale · 06/02/2022 16:57

Mine stopped post 57. Now on HRT and life is great!

Ericaequites · 06/02/2022 17:00

I’m 51, with more painful but very regular periods. When I spend lots of time with my girlfriend, I go onto her schedule, whereas the reverse used to be true. Both my mother and sister had finished at 52. My brother’s MIL had regular periods until 60.

RaininSummer · 06/02/2022 17:00

Last one at 57 (I hope). Now 59.

poetryandwine · 06/02/2022 17:03

OMG I am sorry for you all. But getting periods is linked to heart health. So that is a pretty big silver lining.

Our rates of heart disease only catch up to men’s 10 yrs after menopause

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 06/02/2022 17:03

I'm 55 this year and still regular as clockwork, just nightmarish in their heaviness now though.

itstimeforme · 06/02/2022 17:03

Wow, after some of these responses I'm not sure what I'm moaning about 😂

Floralnomad · 06/02/2022 17:05

I’m 55 and only stopped having regular periods last year , I’m still having one every 3 months or so , I don’t have any problematic menopausal problems though .

bigyellowTpot · 06/02/2022 17:07

I'm mid 40s and totally fed up now of monthly periods I've been having them for over 30 years. I was actually looking forward to no more periods in the next few years but omg reading this thread and hearing some women are still having them in late 50s 😱. you'd think in this day and age they'd have come up with something so periods could be a thing of the past as they are a total nuisance for women.

nettytree · 06/02/2022 17:10

My mum was 60 and had to have a hysterectomy due to still having horrendous periods. My nan went on even longer. I'm 50 now, hope I don't go the same way.

FinalNameChange · 06/02/2022 17:11

I'm 55 3/4.
Had VERY regular periods until a couple of years ago when they got a little more erratic, and had 10 periods last year. Suddenly getting a lot more hot flashes and haven't had an actual period since November, though I've had similar cyclic discomfort.

SirChenjins · 06/02/2022 17:12

53 here and they’re still as regular as clockwork Angry I’m not sure I wanted to read some of these posts!

I’m taking tranexamic acid for the first time ever this month as they have becoming horrendously heavier and heavier with each month that goes by . It’s been an absolute game changer - I’d highly recommend it.
