Periods at nearly 55, am I alone?

itstimeforme · 06/02/2022 16:18

Posting for traffic, aibu to ask if anyone else is still having or had periods at nearly 55? I have the odd gap of a month or two with night sweats and other peri symptoms but they keep returning to the regular 4 week pattern. All my friends were done by 50/51! Is there an age when I should seek a medical opinion Confused
@LadySlipper I am 52 as well and think the same as you each month! DM had last period at 49 and younger friends now period free.

Periods heavier now then when I was younger and have had flooding incidents Sad. Ended up having scans etc but thankfully nothing untoward found
If you’re having really heavy bleeding I’d really recommend tranexamic acid - I’m taking it for the first time this month and it’s been absolutely brilliant

Anonymouseposter · 06/02/2022 21:32

I had regular periods that got increasingly heavier until I had a hysterectomy when I was 58. I never took HRT.
I don't know if they were really ovulatory periods or if it was because I had fibroids. I do know that it was a major nuisance.

Ozanj · 06/02/2022 21:33

My Nan and great gran had regular periods until 60. Hoping they don’t go that long for you. Both did get pregnant naturally in their early 50s. In our family it tends to be a sign of longevity - all the women who had periods until 60 went on to live to 100 at least. Though Nan did pass away at 85 when she slipped off a table while cleaning the ceiling so she probably would have hit 100 too.

Not just your family. "Normal" periods (not fibroids and other abnormal bleeding) well past 50 (and other signs of fertility, e.g. unassisted pregnancies) are a reliable sign that the body is aging more slowly than average, so unless there's an unfortunate accident, such women can expect above average longevity.

Holothane · 06/02/2022 21:47

No I’ve had so many -Robles 9m 0n tablets now to regulate things still have them I’m 56 in July.

Holothane · 06/02/2022 21:48

Sorry troubles.

Isnt it better to have later life menopause when it comes to health? No decrease in collagen, bone density, vaginal atrophy that comes with menopause.

user1471604848 · 06/02/2022 22:11

What's the rush to want periods to stop?
Once you're in menopause, isn't there more risk of bone density decreasing etc.

I had earlyish menopause (49) and would rather it had happened in my 50s.

I didn't know that. That's made me quite happy. Thank you!
blyn72 · 06/02/2022 22:17

A friend of mine had periods until she was 56 and - just to cheer you up - I know somebody whose mother had her at 52, conceived quite naturally :-).

If your periods are manageable and you're healthy, try not to worry about it. Everything will happen in its own time. I can understand you being fed up with it though.

userxx · 06/02/2022 22:20

@Derrymum123

Nope,57 and still as regular as clockwork. I actually envy people at work who have had menopause and are period free. Dr no help at all with over 10 years of flooding and chronic anaemia. Seems to think it will be OK soon enough when menopause kicks in.

10 years of flooding? Oh Jesus 😞

Starbonnet123 · 06/02/2022 22:27

Nope you're not alone 57 and still going strong , in peri menopause and have been on hrt for 7years .
It's nice to know I'm not the only one, I can't wait for them to finally finish .

thenightsky · 06/02/2022 22:31

@doitwithlove

On HRT and still having periods at 56yrs old. I will be speaking to my gp very soon 😬
62 and having HRT periods. I spoke to my GP and he threatened to just stop my HRT. I can't do that... family history of osteoporosis. Guess I'll have periods forever then.
PrettyBluebells · 06/02/2022 22:32

I'm 54. I'd had a mirena for 5 years and bleeding. They were concerned so I had biopsy's but everything was clear, turned out the mirena had become less effective and I'd started my periods again. I've now had a new one put in, so everything has stopped again. I'm assuming that at the end of these 5 years I'll be a couple of months off 60, so it should've stopped. Although my sister is 59 and still having periods.

PermanentTemporary · 06/02/2022 22:35

I'm 52 and currently ok with it continuing, though I missed one last year so it's slowly getting less reliable.

I have been told off by my GP for not using contraception and I guess conception is possible, but have been having unprotected sex for 14 months having read the statistics for live births at this age. Freaked out by the birth story up page though!

Momijin · 06/02/2022 22:44

If average is 51 then as there are plenty of women going through the menopause in their 40s then it makes sense that there are also plenty of women well into their 50s or later.

I'm 51 and haven't had a period for 18 months. Although it is nice not to bleed, doesn't the menopause bring a lot of ageing issues?

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 06/02/2022 23:01

I came off the Depo at 52 to see if my periods had stopped. They had not. I did not appreciate them coming back.

I'm now 53, back on the Depo, no signs of peri menopause. Doc ran some hormone tests recently and they also show no signs of menopause.

justasking111 · 06/02/2022 23:10

56 before they stopped very heavy for a few years. I have PCOS so when young could Go months without a period. I thought that was why I carried on so long

Mossstitch · 06/02/2022 23:14

😨 Had no idea they could go on that long you poor things!! Mine stopped at 49 with very little trouble other than a couple of years of erratic periods and few hot sweats. I wonder if it correlates to how early you started, I was 12🤔 I do know someone who had a baby naturally at 52 though😳

babbi · 06/02/2022 23:20

54 and still going on regular every sodden month .
I just can’t seem to find the unsubscribe button 😩

No symptoms so I haven’t started on HRT or thought about anything like that .
To be honest I haven’t a clue what to do to prepare as it seems like they will never stop ..

oviraptor21 · 06/02/2022 23:21

Am I the only woman that wants them back? 😂

WeAllHaveWings · 06/02/2022 23:32

Im 53 and my last period was a tsumani in October, but this weekend I have really painful boobs which was always the warning sign of my period coming.

Sods law I also have my first mamogram tomorrow, I'll need to load up with paracetamol and Ibruprofen and just hope it doesn't hurt too much while they are this tender! 😫

RedRec · 06/02/2022 23:36

I had my last period when I was 58 (was fairly regular until then). Am 59 now.

noirchatsdeux · 06/02/2022 23:49

My mother was through the whole thing before she was 50. I'm 54 this year, periods have been erratic for the last 5 years, had a couple of flooding type ones last year (big shock, mine have always been on the lighter side), then a gap of about 6 months...and now they seem to be back to the usual monthly schedule!

I've often wondered if it is because my mother had kids and I haven't. My female GP hasn't been much help, to be honest.

My mother had her menopause at 45. She lived another 50 years. For me all over by 50.
