Periods at nearly 55, am I alone?

itstimeforme · 06/02/2022 16:18

Posting for traffic, aibu to ask if anyone else is still having or had periods at nearly 55? I have the odd gap of a month or two with night sweats and other peri symptoms but they keep returning to the regular 4 week pattern. All my friends were done by 50/51! Is there an age when I should seek a medical opinion Confused

I'm 52 this year, and every time I get one, I think "oh this could be the last".

Thankfully they're light thanks to the Mirena I've got in albeit painful, but I've had absolutely no menopause symptoms. Feeling slightly alarmed after reading this ...........

Inastatus · 06/02/2022 19:46

I’m relieved to read these posts. I’m nearly 58 and still having periods. I was still regular as clockwork until I was 57 but for the last year they have been more erratic. Not been too troubled with meno symptoms yet.

FangsForTheMemory · 06/02/2022 19:48

I don't know how to break this to people who are looking to the menopause as the end of menstrual misery, but you can still get all the PMT symptoms. I get mood swings, nightmares and constipation although it's six years since I had a period. The fun part is that without the period itself, you don't know when to expect all the other hijinks.

Nomoreusernames1244 · 06/02/2022 19:48

Me too.

Makes me laugh on here when posters state as fact that by 40 you’re in menopause and therefore will be infertile. 45 and your dried up and shrivelled.

Nope, still going strong here. Mind family pattern seems to start and finish on the older side.

Hbh17 · 06/02/2022 19:48

I had had hardly any periods from about 34 to 48. Then they were back every single month from 48 to 56. Have been period-free for a few months, so keeping my fingers crossed. But the short answer is that everyone is different!

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 06/02/2022 19:52

Oh I have found my women here. I’m 55. Came on today. Nauseous, backache and cramps; just like I have had for the past 41 years. For the first time ever though I was not regular. I had not had a period for a couple of months. That’s never happened before. No other menopause symptoms. I had my last baby aged 44.

Zerrin13 · 06/02/2022 19:52

I had my last period a week before my 55th birthday. I thought they were never going to bloody go!

mrstnov13 · 06/02/2022 20:03

My Mum was having regular periods right up until she died at 56. I don't hold much hope for mine stopping any time soon.

itstimeforme · 06/02/2022 20:21

Thanks again for everyone who has taken the time to respond. It has been so reassuring. Before today all I had read was that average age of menopause was 51, and this is not something I want to be above average in! Now I know I'm not alone I won't worry and let nature take its course, though hopefully before 60 😱

when you say average age of menopause is 51 does that mean periods have fully stopped? Am 50 so only really starting to get to grips with what is about to happen, am woefully ignorant of this whole menopause thing.

HazelBite · 06/02/2022 20:27

Had my last period aged 63, mind you I didn't throw my tampons away for another year (just in case Shock)

itstimeforme · 06/02/2022 20:32

63!!! Wow, I feel like such a moaning minnie now.

I think menopause has happened when when you haven't had a period for a year.

My mother was 58. I truly hope mine end sooner!! 🤞

Twospaniels · 06/02/2022 20:37

I’m 55 and 2 yrs ago was having heavy periods and flooding, hot night sweats etc.
GP put me on sequential HRT patches and now have a bleed every month but much light and only for 2-3 days.

My sister is 58 and was still regular, GP gave her sequential HRT patches, but she moved and got a new GP who put her on conti patches and after 3 months she has stopped having a bleed.

Have you asked about HRT?

Katshouldnotswim · 06/02/2022 20:46

I’m currently having yet another period right now, so if this is the last one ( fingers crossed ? I’ll be almost 55 and menopausal.

Thankfully they seem to be getting lighter, the last 8 years or so they’ve been ramping up in pain and quantity.

I’m just thankful that DH has had the snip otherwise it would be very stressful not knowing where abouts in my cycle I am.

itstimeforme · 06/02/2022 21:03

@Katshouldnotswim thank you, I always thought you went on HRT after your periods stopped. Definitely something to consider.

@LadySlipper I am 52 as well and think the same as you each month! DM had last period at 49 and younger friends now period free.

Periods heavier now then when I was younger and have had flooding incidents Sad. Ended up having scans etc but thankfully nothing untoward found

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 06/02/2022 21:18

63!! Fooking 'ell!

romany4 · 06/02/2022 21:21

My best mate is 56 though and still regular as clockwork every month. Her mum was 58 apparently when it all finished.

Cissyandflora · 06/02/2022 21:22

Sounds normal to me. I’m a couple of years older than you. Periods still happening but the past year very infrequent.

crispinglovershighkick · 06/02/2022 21:23

Regular until 52ish, then six months of solid bleeding, had some fibroids removed and then one more period, nothing else for 11mos. I went on hrt, have started bleeding again, last month for two weeks. Gynae says it's normal when you start hrt and 'it will settle' but it's very annoying.

I'm glad I didn't throw away all my washable pads and period pants but it's grim having to get them out again at the age of 54. I've had periods for 44 years!

Rubyupbeat · 06/02/2022 21:25

Mine have seemed to have stopped just now, I am 58 in a couple of weeks. My gp was 63!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/02/2022 21:29

One of my friends is 54 and like me (a bit younger) hasn't had a single sign of peri so far.

Kind of hoping that it'll all just stop one day, as I know my mother had horrendous symptoms from about 42 until a hysterectomy aged 58 and was apparently still on HRT because of symptoms when she was around 70.
