To not want to work at my local McDonald's in case someone I know comes in?

I currently work in care, but have started to look for other jobs mainly because of bad management and I feel so overworked because of lack of staff.

I’ve applied for retail jobs, but got no response or rejected. So I applied to work at McDonald’s, there’s a few 20-30 mins from me who’s hiring. I got an interview at a McDonald’s 20 mins from me next week, my local McDonald’s is also hiring. It’s a 10 min walk from my house, ideally I’d like to work at my local McDonald’s but again it’s my local McDonald’s which means I’ll see people I know, school mums, neighbours etc basically everyone who knows me and that’s putting me off. I don’t know why, a part of thinks just fuck it and apply, and there’s the other part of me that’s scared. Tbh I’d like to work my way up and hopefully become a manager one day, it’s silly but has anyone worked at a place like this in your local area?

You are working, that's something to be proud of so don't fear what other people might think.
Their opinions have no input or valuation on your life path so if you want to take the job do so.
Be proud, hold your head up,there's absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about working in MacDonald.
Good luck on your management path.

SalsaLove · 05/02/2022 12:41

I can understand why you feel like this, but there will never be any shame in doing an honest days work. McDonald’s has an excellent reputation for their management programme. Excellent choice!

Bagelsandbrie · 05/02/2022 12:41

Anyone that comes into McDonald’s to eat has no right to judge you for working there…! (I say that as someone who loves a McDonald’s). Go for it.

Iliketeaagain · 05/02/2022 12:43

What another OP said - McDonald's has got a good reputation for developing staff in to management. A family member worked from when he left school up to managing a branch with support from McDonalds to develop up the levels, so it could be a good career opportunity.

There is no shame in working anywhere IMO.

ghostmouse · 05/02/2022 12:44

Nothing wrong whatsoever in working in Maccies. My son did it for years and progressed quite quickly up the career ladder.

His mates thought it was cool that he was working there and tbh it’s a job and you are working

Good luck!

OverByYer · 05/02/2022 12:44

if people judge you for holding down a job, no matter where are not worth worrying about. I believe MCdonalds are a good employer.

Good point!

Honestly OP there’s no shame in working anywhere - we’re not all high flying business people! McDs has a good reputation as an employer - you’re not condoning people feeding their toddlers McNuggets every day by working there. It’s a massively popular international food outlet - I can’t see why that is anything to be embarrassed about. Go for it. And good luck!

Aboutcoffee · 05/02/2022 12:45

Go for it!!
Chances are you will only see them there once and then they will go to the McD further away so you don't know they are there every 2 days😂

Thesearmsofmine · 05/02/2022 12:45

Go for it OP. I get what you mean because I remember as a teen people used to say you’d end up working at McDonalds if you didn’t work hard but actually with an adult perspective there is nothing wrong with it at all! It’s a decent job and they give you the chance to work your way up.

DreamerSeven · 05/02/2022 12:45

Go for it! Be proud you are trying to do an honest days work and looking to progress. I honestly wouldn’t think twice about it if I saw someone I knew working there.

This is SO true!! Grin

I'd never judge anyone holding down ANY job, whether MaccyD's or whatever, and certainly no worse than a job in a supermarket or Primark or wherever. MaccyD are actually quite a good employer and I'm sure you'd be able to get longer hours or even promotions if you wanted more than a few hours of serving drinks or whatever, once you've got your foot in the door and prove your reliability.

SleepingStandingUp · 05/02/2022 12:47

I wouldn't judge someone working somewhere I take my kids for a treat. I would choose to use the other one more often so YOU don't judge ME 😂

Aquamarine1029 · 05/02/2022 12:48

Anyone who would judge you for working hard at an honest job isn't even worth knowing. Go for it.

Berengaria1 · 05/02/2022 12:49

There is never any shame in working to earn your living. You are better than anyone who might judge you.

MaChienEstUnDick · 05/02/2022 12:50

People bringing me food? I love them, I don't judge them!

This is the perfect time to trot out my grandmother's favourite saying: those that matter don't mind, and those that mind don't matter.

Hold your head up high and take advantage of every opportunity your new job brings.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 05/02/2022 12:51

Working further from home will make your life more difficult. A job is a job. Take it.

deeplyrooted · 05/02/2022 12:51

I chuckled when I read this because I immediately wondered how many of those people might be embarrassed to be seen eating there😂

MacDonalds is a great employer. Hold your head up and go for it.

sandgrown · 05/02/2022 12:51

I have a “good “ job in the public sector but after partially retiring my relationship over over 20 years broke down . I still had a dependent child and needed extra money so I took a temporary checkout job in a local supermarket. I did see people I know but after the initial surprise there were no negative comments. I loved doing a different sort of work and the money really helped . Go for it OP

Kshhuxnxk · 05/02/2022 12:51

I respect anyone out there working. Doesn't matter what the job is at all.

LikeALeadBalloon · 05/02/2022 12:53

This is really true op. People who know you will be pissed off you work there because you will judge THEM for the frequency they eat there! Go with the option that is more convenient for you! Good luck 🤞

Exactly what I came on to say
mclovinit · 05/02/2022 13:07

I know McDonald's is a great employer, I worked for them when I was younger. I loved working there, which is one of the reasons why I applied again. It's not because I don't want to be seen working at McDonald's, I just don't like working at a place in my local area knowing anyone I know can basically just walk in. I prefer working in an area where nobody knows me.

Wouldn’t it be worse if they saw you queuing up outside the dole office? Go for it and hold your head high.
