To not want to work at my local McDonald's in case someone I know comes in?

I currently work in care, but have started to look for other jobs mainly because of bad management and I feel so overworked because of lack of staff.

I’ve applied for retail jobs, but got no response or rejected. So I applied to work at McDonald’s, there’s a few 20-30 mins from me who’s hiring. I got an interview at a McDonald’s 20 mins from me next week, my local McDonald’s is also hiring. It’s a 10 min walk from my house, ideally I’d like to work at my local McDonald’s but again it’s my local McDonald’s which means I’ll see people I know, school mums, neighbours etc basically everyone who knows me and that’s putting me off. I don’t know why, a part of thinks just fuck it and apply, and there’s the other part of me that’s scared. Tbh I’d like to work my way up and hopefully become a manager one day, it’s silly but has anyone worked at a place like this in your local area?

Face mask and a hat like someone else said, and no one will know anyway Grin

tackling · 05/02/2022 15:16

But really, anyone who judges isn't worth knowing anyway. It's fine. It's just another job and you'll probably get a free meal or two as well.

VodselForDinner · 05/02/2022 15:31

There’s nothing wrong with working in McDonald’s. It’s decent, honest, hard work, and you’re likely to learn new skills like customer service, time management, and food hygiene.

sweatervest · 05/02/2022 15:44

i work in mcdonalds and people from years ago recognise me, even though i'm wearing the cap and mask.

i love love love love working there and the extra money is obviously brilliant and needed.
plus free drink and free food. hooooooooooooooooooooooooray.

Mumofsend · 05/02/2022 15:44

Nothing but respect here. You are working hard.

One of the school dads delivers my weekly shopping, I worry what he thinks re my wine and chocolate heavy food shop Blush swings and roundabouts

LubaLuca · 05/02/2022 15:54

Nobody would think anything of it. You want a convenient job close to home, there's nothing to criticise there. It's a great opportunity, with far better prospects than in your current role.

nellly · 05/02/2022 16:40

I wouldn't think negatively seeing someone I know working at macodnalds (which I frequent far too often for drive thru coffee when the baby sleeps in the car)
I would be happy to see a friend and say hi!

hangrylady · 05/02/2022 17:08

There's no shame in hard work. If anyone judges you they're not the sort of person whose opinion matters. Go for it OP.

Loopytiles · 05/02/2022 17:09

Go for it!

Ridiculeisnothingtobescaredof · 05/02/2022 17:12

I bet McDonald's pays more than care. And who cares what they think, go for it :)

justaweeone · 05/02/2022 17:18

Go for it OP
My Ds has worked there since he was 16 and still works in the holidays when back from uni
He had also considered their degree apprenticeship
He loves working there and has gained so many skills
He's well paid and doesn't have a bad word to say about it

BarbaraofSeville · 05/02/2022 17:40

Good luck with the interview OP and if anyone you know sees you, remember that they'll be jealous as you get free food while working there and they have to pay for it.

hibeat · 05/02/2022 19:22

Yup. It was cool. Never had a bad comment. And it's cool on the cv later on too. Go for it.

Lampshading · 05/02/2022 19:25

However you feel is valid so don't want it to sound like minimising- but you'll be treated better than you are in care, get paid more for less stressful work, and it does look good on a CV as shows customer service etc. Most people won't care either, hope your interview goes well.

Wizzbangfizz · 05/02/2022 19:38

Anyone who would judge you isn't worth knowing OP - a days work is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.

RightOnTheEdge · 06/02/2022 15:11

Good luck with the interview tomorrow OP.
I hope it goes well!

Giraffesandbottoms · 06/02/2022 15:50

If I had a friend of acquaintance who worked at McDonald’s I would be thrilled as I assume There is some sort of discount or perk re free food 😬 a job is a job, they are a fantastic employer and well done x

gogohm · 06/02/2022 15:51

If you opt for kitchen nobody would know

babyjellyfish · 06/02/2022 15:55

No personal experience of this but I know tons of people in my home town who are doing low paid jobs. Mostly in shops but I don't see any difference between working in the corner shop or working at McDonald's. I certainly wouldn't judge someone I knew if I went there and saw them working.

swampytiggaa · 06/02/2022 16:00

Good luck with your interview 😊

Chocomelon · 06/02/2022 16:02

I can understand why you would feel that way but you just need to do what you're comfortable with.

RoyKentsChestHair · 06/02/2022 16:07

Good luck with your interview!! Treat is as a trial run for the one you want, that way it will take the pressure off a bit. I had an interview a couple of weeks ago for a job I wasn’t really sure about. I went anyway, got some practice and then when an interview came up for a job I did want I was less nervous as I’d had a bit of recent experience. It will also be handy to see what questions they ask and then you’ll be better prepared if the local one offers you an interview too! Saying that, 20 mins isn’t too bad anyway, so if they offer it to you it could be worth taking it, getting some experience and then potentially making the closer one part of your next career move in a year or two if you get fed up with the journey. Good luck!

SartresSoul · 06/02/2022 16:34

I understand this. I worked in Greggs when I was a student years ago and I saw a fair few people I went to school with. I was absolutely mortified that they’d think all I’d amounted to was a Greggs worker when I was actually doing it to pay the bills while I was at uni. I totally get it, I found it really soul destroying.

kierenthecommunity · 06/02/2022 20:00

I’d definitely go for the interview, as if the local one comes to nothing, a job 20 minutes drive away is hardly a mega commute either Smile

Sharrowgirl · 06/02/2022 20:06

I was served in McDs by someone I knew and was mortally embarrassed that I’d been ‘caught’ having one (I was on my own). So they might be more embarrassed than you!
