What the title says.

This will be the one where he resigns, so if please keep the whatabout to a minimum.

@BoreOfWhabylon

How can Barclay be Johnson's Chief of Staff AND a Cabinet Minister AND a constituency MP all at the same time?
He clearly doesn't care about the people who voted him in.

Excellent point. I don’t imagine his constituents are particularly impressed.
Notonthestairs · 06/02/2022 15:15

Thanks for that thread Duncin.

It seems that Barclay will just add another layer (and ego!) to an already complex system. Maybe I'm missing something.

Thank you for the replies. I think I'm beginning to understand somewhat now. So COS is a role that bypasses the cabinet process? The PMs political best friend?

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 06/02/2022 16:16

@OhYouBadBadKitten

I'm so glad it's not just me Notonthestairs. Grin Political commentators seem horrified, but I'd like to understand why it is bad, I've never actually watched West Wing Blush maybe I should make a start on it.
The West Wing is brilliant. I heartily recommend it.

Leo = Chief of Staff
Toby = Communications Director

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 06/02/2022 16:19

@OhYouBadBadKitten

This is how President Bartlet explained the CoS in The West Wing -

One cabinet secretary has to stay away from the Capitol in case the building and all major government officials are blown away at one time. The Secretary of Agriculture is picked. The President has him come to the White House and as he leaves, he tells him:
"If anything happens. . . . You got a best friend?"
"Yes, sir."
"Is he smarter than you?"
"Yes sir."
"Would you trust him with your life?"
"Yes sir."
"That's your chief of staff."

(I very much doubt Boris has done the same, at least not this time...)

DuncinToffee · 06/02/2022 16:54

Poor Steve

So much for that No 10 reshuffle restoring relations with MPs - Boris Johnson’s new chief of staff Steve Barclay can’t even join the Tory MP WhatsApp group…

Theresa Coffey is asking someone to volunteer to leave the group to make space

Saucery · 06/02/2022 17:33

Are they all sitting it out hoping it will be her who has to leave?

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 06/02/2022 17:57

I really need to go to the opticians...I read that link as "capable of fatherhood" 🤦‍♀️

Saucery you'd think the one which was least useful would leave...

The interesting thing is that the only people prepared to take on these jobs are people not dependent on the job for their income. Because you'd have to be insane to give up secure employment to go and work for Johnson for what would end up being a few weeks at the very most.
jgw1 · 07/02/2022 07:22

Am I right in thinking that one can tell it is a government of none of the talents when Steve Barclay is appointed to yet another job in it?

itsgettingweird · 07/02/2022 07:42

So now apparently it's alls Carries fault and she's emotionally abusive/controlling towards him Hmm

DePfeffoff · 07/02/2022 07:56

Fortunately given his track record of lying and laziness way before he'd even met Carrie, that excuse won't wash.

Zonder · 07/02/2022 08:06

No doubt previous blame can be laid at the feet of some other woman who was around at the time.

CSWife · 07/02/2022 08:09

Much as I dislike the PM and don't think it reflects well on anyone who chooses to associate with or work for him (or marry him), I find the rhetoric that this is all Carrie's doing extremely distasteful.

ClaudineClare · 07/02/2022 08:24

I agree. Johnson has always behaved fecklessly. Carrie is not responsible for this shit show.

GreenLunchBox · 07/02/2022 08:33

The Times laying into Bozo.

The prime minister’s systematic deceit and frivolity have undermined our democracy at home and shamed our nation abroad

DuncinToffee · 07/02/2022 08:40

Carrie another black cat story? The NHS backlog plan has been delayed.

merrymouse · 07/02/2022 08:44

I think the ‘Carries fault’ line is part misogyny, part people trying to justify why they didn’t see this coming.

UnconditionalSurrender · 07/02/2022 08:49

I bet the anti Carrie spin is coming from Jonhson's camp. Narcissist playbook- throw anyone under the bus if it is expedient. It might play well to those who don't want to believe they have been conned by Johnson. Blaming the wife gives them an out. Whether they would still support him is another matter.
Ashworth had some guff in his article about how much better BJ was when he was with Marina Wheeler as she could control him. Yh. Right. Multiple affairs and an undisclosed number of love children.

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 07/02/2022 09:20

I think the anti-Carrie stuff is coming from the ERG/CRG/Steve Baker nutters. They are on an anti-green/anti-regulation campaign - otherwise what was the point of Brexit (as they see it)

They've succeeded in ousting Carrie's bf Henry Newman - he's going to work for Michael Gove now on levelling up. Bet he'll go down well with the red wall voters...
