I wonder if he will go for Mishcon de Reya - Thatcher's favourite choice of legal beagles. If he does, he'll find that they don't come cheap

He won’t care. Someone else will be paying as always.

Notonthestairs · 11/02/2022 13:56

I think Mishcon's focus is on cases of fraud - I suppose that might come in handy.

Didn’t they represent Diana in her divorce? Or have I misremembered?
Notonthestairs · 11/02/2022 13:59

Yes they did.

Blossomtoes · 11/02/2022 14:01

Thank you @Notonthestairs, it’s comforting to see my memory’s holding up! We’re going to need a new thread very soon, shall I start one?

Notonthestairs · 11/02/2022 14:01

Fairly certain they also acted for Gina Miller.

Notonthestairs · 11/02/2022 14:05

@Blossomtoes yes please do!

SueSaid · 11/02/2022 14:06

@Peregrina

Nice try JaniieJones - will you tell us what excuse Mrs Johnson and Lulu Lytle have for being at a 'work gathering' in the Cabinet Office? Neither works there, and even if Lulu Lytle was chasing Johnson to settle his bill he could have gone up to his flat to discuss it with her.
We just don't know do we and I for one don't take Paul Brand and Pippa Crerar's word on these things. The Mirror has previous for being rather creative with photos, for example the disturbing fake Iraq pics of fake soldiers fakely urinating on fake prisoners. So let's wait for the facts shall we.

I hope some on here never serve on juries, if you do you have to wait for evidence and all the facts before making your minds up.

Wonder why the media aren't full of stories about the alleged bullying by whips being dropped due to lack of evidence? It's all they were wanging about 2 weeks again now it's all gone very quiet on the subject. Funny that.

@BoodyDedalus

30/40 people who didn't even physically work in the same area gathering together with BYOB and snacks after work, no.

Did the rules specify working in the same area?

This related to the point of the rules which was, surprise surprise, to stop infection spreading. People try to justify this on the basis that work colleagues will be mixing with each other all day so why not in the evening, but the strong likelihood is that, with 100 people invited, actually they were mixing with people they never or rarely saw during the day, thus increasing the infection risk.
Peregrina · 11/02/2022 14:26

We just don't know do we and I for one don't take Paul Brand and Pippa Crerar's word on these things.

We don't know, but I am damn sure that whoever checks in and out of government buildings is logged onto the system. And in Lulu Lytle's case would need to say who she was meant to be visiting - who might even have to come to the reception desk to escort her.

DePfeffoff · 11/02/2022 14:27

@UnconditionalSurrender

I hope Johnson gets a lawyer to start arguing on technicalities. He looks even more guilty, shifty and out of touch then. If it was at all possible. Again its the lack of political nous. Win a battle and lose the war.
Exactly. And that's a point that seems to be lost on many of his defenders on these threads. It's almost as if Conservative Central Office was unable to understand why it matters that the PM obey both the letter and the spirit of the law.
DePfeffoff · 11/02/2022 14:30

@longwayoff

Wait. Bozo's going to spend HIS OWN MONEY on a lawyer? Things must be bad. Who's up for funding it before he sends out the begging bowl? Only - as a donor had the gall to complain just a few days ago z don't expect return on your investment, we can't all be in the House of Lords.
I doubt he's spending his own money. Some gullible Tory donor is being promised a knighthood in return for footing the bill as I write.
BoodyDedalus · 11/02/2022 15:04

DePfeffoff:

Of course, but unless the law actually laid down the maximum number of workers who could be invited, there can be no fine. Not even the Met can make up the law to suit the facts.

itsgettingweird · 11/02/2022 15:59

@DuncinToffee

More from Steven Swinford A senior ally of Boris Johnson has said the Metropolitan Police will need to be 'very certain' that he has breached lockdown rules before issuing an FPN 'There is inevitably a degree of discretion here. Do you want the Met Police deciding who the prime minister is?'

This has a vibe of the PM is above the law

So technically I could have employed my friends and family to come in and so work in my house - cleaners etc could all work.

And we could have sat around having drinks and cheese.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 11/02/2022 16:17

Whether Johnson stays or goes in the immediate future is up to his MPs, and they are unlikely to prefer their party's biggest vote loser (Major) over one of its biggest vote winners.

This is misinformation. Boris Johnson is NOT one its biggest vote winners. The party got less votes in the first election with him as leader (13.9 million) than they did in their first election with John Major as leader (14 million). Boris Johnson only pulled in a few more votes than Theresa May did in her disasterous election (13,6 million). And other conservative leaders have got less than John Major did in his second election.

It is not "misinformation". It is the number of seats won or lost which matters to MPs. Johnson won 80 seats, Major lost 81 seats.

Message from MNHQ: Hi all

We're going to take this thread down now.

Please don't make anyone else feel unwelcome from posting on site - it's not in the spirit, and not what Mumsnet is about.

Peregrina · 11/02/2022 18:05

It got pulled because people weren't being nice or some such.
So a thread 7.5 has started up.
