Maths Disagreement

One person thinks the answer is 165 and the other thinks 67, who is right?

YABU - 165
YANBU - 67

Or what’s the answer if both are wrong?

11 course

isitxmasalready · 04/02/2022 14:07

its 38.
All shapes are slightly different in the last sum
2 o'clock, not 3 + 3 bananas (not 4) +3 bananas (not 4) x 11 points on the shape rather than 15 points in the original shape

TeenPlusCat · 04/02/2022 14:08

You can't really 'do' algebra without understanding the order of operations.

3y^2 means 3 times y times y not 3 times y times 3 times y
The is the O and the M bit of BODMAS.

BODMAS is not a new thing invented this century!!

katepilar · 04/02/2022 14:10

19

KeepYaHeadUp · 04/02/2022 14:11

I made it 38

thelittlestrhino · 04/02/2022 14:11
@thelittlestrhino

Not really. Both worked out using the previous calculations. It's just "find x".
Not necessarily, you simply do not have enough information on there to prove that the time on a clock or the number of bananas makes a difference to their value.

I also assumed the same as most people, and would have suggested an answer of 38, but that is based on assumptions which cannot be proven conclusively with the information given.

katepilar · 04/02/2022 14:12

ups, no. 38

Cantleave · 04/02/2022 14:12
@Cantleave

Nope. It isnt 67.

It's 38 or 35
Nope. Sorry, but it is you who is definitely wrong. It is 67.
Pretty ridiculous to say this mathematical equation could be 38 or 35! There cannot be 2 solutions!!
To simplify…..
3+4+4x15
No brackets, power or division, so goes to Multiplication which is -
4x15 =60
Then to addition
3+4+60=67

KeepYaHeadUp · 04/02/2022 14:14

In final sum:

 • 1 less banana = 3
 • clock is on 2 not 3 = 2
 • 4 straight sides missing = 11

BODMAS

11 x 3 = 33
2 + 3 + 33 = 38

lookinginhammersmith · 04/02/2022 14:14

38

Longingforatikihut · 04/02/2022 14:14

There are only 3 (not 4) bananas in the bunches of the unsolved equation, the time is 2 o'clock not 3 o'clock and the number of sides/corners of the layered shapes is different when you assent the square sooooo...

2+3+3x11 = 38

bongsuhan · 04/02/2022 14:14
@ThumbWitchesAbroad

But how do you know you're meant to count the sides?
It works by counting the sides. But they all also work by assigning each shape with the same value.
They haven't shown you which it is. They could have done in the second line by removing the square and the answer would tell us if the square was 4 or 5. They haven't told us.

You cant assume in maths. They haven't given enough information. So it could be both 35 or 38. Both work. You cant give one single answer.
This. There is no answer, because you have now way of knowing what the new shapes are, you can just guess.. These "challenges" use the ambiguity to generate interest and clicks on SM. It works well, as this thread (and others like it) shows.

thelittlestrhino · 04/02/2022 14:14

@Cantleave

The clocks, bunches of bananas and shapes are not the same on the final line of the calculation as they are on the initial 2... The whole long thread is about how that may influence the final calculation.

LincolnshireYellowBelly · 04/02/2022 14:15

I get it as 35

bongsuhan · 04/02/2022 14:15

"no way of knowing what value the new shapes are" sry

Itsalmostanaccessory · 04/02/2022 14:15

@Cantleave

You use the number on the clock face which, for the last line, is 2.

You use the number of bananas which, for the last line, is 3.

Then you use the number of sides which, for the last line is 11.

That's 2 + 3 + 3 x 11 = 38.

But the shapes also work if they are each assigned the same value, 5. Because there isnt enough information. Both work though; all shapes worth 5 or by counting the number of sides.

In that case the answer is 35 (because there are 2 shapes in the last line).

There isnt enough information to tell us if the shapes are worked by counting the number of sides or by each shape being worth 5.

The answer can be 35 or 38.

steppemum · 04/02/2022 14:15

grey shape - each shape is the number of sides, so in the last sum the grey shape = 11
bananas = 1 per banana, so in the last row = 3
clock = time on clockface and in last row = 2

last row is:

2+3+3x11

BODMAS

2+3+ (3x11)
6 + 33

answer = 39

rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 04/02/2022 14:15

3 + 4 + 4 x 15 = 67

GivenchyDahhling · 04/02/2022 14:16

@Cantleave If you’d spent a couple of minutes reading replies rather than typing all of that out, you’d have realised that the calculations you have done assume the symbols retain the same but there are subtle differences on the last line eg the number of bananas, number of sides on the shape, time on the clock.

Obviously there aren’t two solutions. Again, as has already been explained by many, many posters, the ambiguity is whether the grey shape gains its initial value of 15 because it has 15 sides in total or because it’s three shapes with a value of 5 each.

Bintymcbintface · 04/02/2022 14:16

38

2+3+(3x11)

Itsalmostanaccessory · 04/02/2022 14:17

@rainrainraincamedowndowndown

3 + 4 + 4 x 15 = 67
Really? People are really still saying 67? Have you read any comments?
steppemum · 04/02/2022 14:18

WHOOPS classic simple error:

sorry

2+3+(3x11)

5 + 33

is 38 not 39

MrsEricBana · 04/02/2022 14:18

Def 38 being 2 + 3 + (3×11)

Hopeful201 · 04/02/2022 14:18

38

inheritancetrack · 04/02/2022 14:19

top shape = 15
bunch of 4 bananas =8
so bunch of 3 bananas =6
first row of clocks =1
last clock is different.=?
last shape is different=?
BODMAS is in there and also algebra. so I am out!
