Maths Disagreement

One person thinks the answer is 165 and the other thinks 67, who is right?

YABU - 165
YANBU - 67

Or what’s the answer if both are wrong?

@shouldistop

Except the shape in the last sum isn't exactly the same as in the first but I assume that's a mistake?
I don't think it is. The shape in all but the last question is a hexagon, overlaid with a pentagon, overlaid with a square; 6 sides + 5 sides + 4 sides = 15 The shape in the last question is just hexagon + pentagon (11)

Sorry if it's already covered, on my phone and it won't scroll properly!Blush

I got 88

Clock in the 3rd row at 3o’clock amd in the 4th row at 2.

Each banana worth 1 and 3 in each bunch in the 4th row.

15 point in the shape in the first row and only 11
In the 4th

2+3+3 x 11 = 88

It really is time to stop now. It's been explained about a hundred times why you are wrong.
lottiegarbanzo · 05/02/2022 23:42

38

That's a sneaky one, as every shape is different in the last line to the previous ones.

EmoIsntDead · 06/02/2022 01:42
@shmithecat2 I am not sure. Many people insisting it was 20, some of my friends who are not stupid at all could not understand even after explaining it. The kids knew instantly but they are doing it regularly I guess.

Yes it could have been written as 40÷1/2 but still the same. I can understand misreading the calculation but people genuinely didn't understand even after explaining it.
Jesus wept 🤦🏻‍♀️

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 06/02/2022 02:28

@Wantosleep39

It’s 38 How did you even find 165 🙈
getting to 165 is easy - you ignore all the changes and BODMAS and the final line goes like this: 4+4+3x15 - so you add 4 and 4 and 3 = 11, then multiply by 15 => 165''

Also utterly wrong, but that's how they get there.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 06/02/2022 02:37

The 40 ÷ ½ thing is quite disturbing, that people can't "get it"!

Maybe they need it put into infant school language - how many times does ½ go into 40? Start with the cake again (sorry @poetryandwine! Grin) - just with one.
How many half cakes go into one cake? 2! (really, anyone who can't answer this has a Serious Problem)
So how many half cakes are in 10 cakes? well, 20!
So then how many half cakes are in 40 cakes? If they can't get to 80 by then, then there really IS something wrong!

sashh · 06/02/2022 03:34

@Heytheredemons

For all those saying there is no bracket. That is irrelevant. The bracket is implied under the rules of BODMAS. The correct answer is 67

Even entering the sum in a calculator without brackets will tell you 67 is correct answer

That depends on the calculator.

For anyone using the MS calculator, try doing the sum in the basic calculator and then try again with the scientific calculator.

Try this one on the regular and then the scientific calculator

2+3x2=

If you don't know how to swap, then when you open the calculator if you have windows 7 you will get a blue calculator, click on the left hand button labeled 'view' and then click 'scientific' on windows 10 it is three horizontal lines.

Obviously you van have both on the screen at the same time.

NumberTheory · 06/02/2022 03:55

@modgepodge
If you saw 4 + 3y would you think that was the same as 7y? If not, it suggests you did understand order of operations, even if it wasn’t called BODMAS.

This also uses a different convention - proximity/implied/juxtaposition (where two factors next to each other without a symbol or space between them are taken to be inside parentheses) which generally overrides bodmas. So would be easy to miss bodmas entirely but still be comfortable with 4 +3y

bruffin · 06/02/2022 05:02

It works on the basic calculator on the edge swipe on samsung Excel also uses BODMAS,
My old calculator got 10, but if I put sum in BODMAS order ie 2*3+2 it was correct.
I really don't remember being taught BODMAS back in 70s but remember being taught always do brackets.
I do always remember if you divide by a fraction the number gets bigger, so know 40/.5 = 80

sqirrelfriends · 06/02/2022 05:26

I got 80

FluffyBooBoo · 06/02/2022 06:49

71

FluffyBooBoo · 06/02/2022 06:51

Not really. It's 38.

sqirrelfriends · 06/02/2022 07:21

Actually I have 88.

Each picture shows a unit.

The clock has a quarter of an hour - 2.5 except on the last line where it's 10 past - 2

The bananas are worth one each - 6

The geometric shapes have 15 corners, except on the last line where they have 11.

2+6 = 8
8*11= 88

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 06/02/2022 07:24

Sashh - just tried the sum on the scientific setting on the MS calculator, and you're right - it does it correctly!
So basic > 88, scientific > 38.

LemonDrizzles · 06/02/2022 07:37

First line, 3 shapes, 15 each, 3 layers, each layer equals 5.

Second line, each banana equals 1

Third line, each hour equals 2

Final line 2 hours x2 =4 Plus 3 bananas x1=3 3 bananas x1=3 Plus 5 times 2 layers = 10

20

LemonDrizzles · 06/02/2022 07:38

Sorry 4 +3+3 x 10= 100

sashh · 06/02/2022 08:06

@ThumbWitchesAbroad

Sashh - just tried the sum on the scientific setting on the MS calculator, and you're right - it does it correctly! So basic > 88, scientific > 38.
So my job here is done.

I once showed someone who had completed his PhD that there was a scientific calculator on his computer, he was simultaneously impressed and unimpressed that he hadn't known about it before.

bruffin · 06/02/2022 08:07

@LemonDrizzles
the final sum is
2 +3 +3 x 11

the clock is 2
there are 3 bananas
and a hexagon and a pentagon

MyNameIsArthur · 06/02/2022 08:11

67

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 06/02/2022 08:14

@sashh - oh I knew it was there, just hadn't bothered to switch it on for the basic maths.
I've used it for more complex stuff before :)

MyComputerGetsSadWithoutMe · 06/02/2022 08:17

165

MyNameIsArthur · 06/02/2022 08:22

38!

TeenPlusCat · 06/02/2022 08:34

@MyComputerGetsSadWithoutMe

165
As maths teachers say: 'show your working' And you are incorrect, because of the rule about order of operations, commonly known as BODMAS.
daisypond · 06/02/2022 08:55

I get 35.
The shapes, bananas, clocks and calculations are different on last row:
Last row banana =3
Last row clock = 2
Last row shape = 10

2 + 3 + ( 3 x 10) = 35
