Maths Disagreement

One person thinks the answer is 165 and the other thinks 67, who is right?

YABU - 165
YANBU - 67

Or what’s the answer if both are wrong?

I get 19

Sideswiped · 04/02/2022 12:49

It's 51.
@YouMadeABear is nearly there, but the last number in the bracket is 11 (if you look closely there is no square - 15 is because it's 6+5+4, so this symbol is quite - 6+5)

Whammyyammy · 04/02/2022 12:49
  1. Butbthe last shape in final sum is different and no reference can be made, presume a mistake, if so 67. Use bodmas
Saisong · 04/02/2022 12:49

2 + 3 + 3 x 11 = 38 obviously using BODMAS

2 on the clock
3 bananas
3 bananas
11 indices on the shapes

Neves7 · 04/02/2022 12:49

I get 38 too

UndertheCedartree · 04/02/2022 12:49

@TeenPlusCat

This is one of those puzzles that I absolutely hate. it looks like it should be a 'proper' logical maths puzle. But When you look carefully you see the clocks show different times and the multishape o the last line has a pentagon and hexagon whereas the others also include squares.

NB If it is following BODMAS (which it should be) then the last line should multiply bananas by multishape before adding the clock and other bananas on.

Apart from that, I'm out, because I hate trick 'maths' puzzles.

Oh gosh, I didn't notice that! I give up then! Grin
Warblerinwinter · 04/02/2022 12:50

No brackets- therefore no single correct answer.
Who on earth wrote it like that with no brackets
Dumb really

Sideswiped · 04/02/2022 12:50

The weird symbol is the sum of the number of sides of the shapes.

Burgerqueenbee · 04/02/2022 12:50

So the grey one is 15 each.
Clock is 3 each.
Banana is 4 each.

The bottom line the clock is at 2 instead of 3 so is now 2. The bananas have 3 not 4 so are 3 each (so 2+3+3 = 8). The grey thing is made up of 2 shapes instead of 3 so is 10 not 15.
8 x 10 is 80.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 04/02/2022 12:50

The last shapes value is the total number of sides. Hence in the first part it's 15 but without the square in the middle it's 11.

Neves7 · 04/02/2022 12:50

Oops cross post Saisong already explained it

Chloemol · 04/02/2022 12:50

Grey = 15
Banana = 4
Clock =3

Final one 3+4+4x15=165

That’s what I get, however is it a trick as the clock in the final one has the hands at a different position , and the grey thing at the end doesnt look like the others
So actually who knows

TeenPlusCat · 04/02/2022 12:51

NB. With the maths rule of BODMAS (which you will have been taught in some way in primary even if you have forgotten it now) you multiply before adding. You do not need brackets for this to occur.

If you want to add all the things on the last line and then multiply by the multishape, then you would have to have brackets.

Talipesmum · 04/02/2022 12:51

It’s definitely not going to be

(3+4+4) x 15 = 165

Because you multiply the bananas by the hexagon thing, then add the other bananas and clock to the answer.

But yes, the pictures in the last row are a bit different so it might be trying to be clever in that way. But you still wouldn’t get 165.

Sideswiped · 04/02/2022 12:51

Wait, so looking at the bananas it's 3 + 3 + (3 x 11)
So it's 39.

RebeccaCloud9 · 04/02/2022 12:51

The clock says 2, there are 3 bananas, and there is only a hexagon and pentagon not a square in the grey shape.

So 2 + 3 + 3 x 11 = 38 (not forgetting bodmas!)

Wowcherarestalkingme · 04/02/2022 12:52

I get 38 too

NewPapaGuinea · 04/02/2022 12:52

It’s 38

2 o,clock + 3 bananas + 3 bananas x 11 points

Em8725 · 04/02/2022 12:52

38,

4 bananas in a bunch is 4, 3 bananas (bottom row) is 3.

Shape is 15 (count the sides on each shape)
But in the bottom row it’s 11 - square is missing so 4 sides missing, 15-4 is 11.

Clock is 3 (3pm) but bottom row is 2pm so it’s 2.

Then you have 2 + 3 + 3 x 11.

Following BODMAS (multiplication first) it’s 2 + 3 + 33 which is 38.

ShadowPuppets · 04/02/2022 12:53

It’s 35 imo.

The final line says

2 + 3 + 3 x 10

Because the clock shows 2 o’clock (unlike 3 o’clock when it equals 3 above)
The bananas are bunches of 3 (unlike bunches of 4 when they equal 4 above)
And the shape is only 2/3s of itself, so is 2/3 of 15 (it’s 15 when above), so equals 10

Then based on BIDMAS
No brackets
No indices
No division
Do the multiplication -> 3 x 10 = 30

Sum now reads 2 + 3 + 30
Do the addition -> 2 + 3 = 5
Do the next addition -> 5 + 30 = 35

No subtraction

God I hate these things Grin

VikingLundyMalin · 04/02/2022 12:53

Assuming the errors in the bottom equation are an error - 3 bananas not 4, different times on clocks and different final symbol.

Then the answer is 67 - bodmas applies.

Frlrlrubert · 04/02/2022 12:53

Oh yeah, now I see the fewer bananas and the sides I agree with 38.

Sideswiped · 04/02/2022 12:53

Now I've noticed the clock is different!
2+3+(3x11) is indeed 38

Grumpsy · 04/02/2022 12:53

You’re both wrong it’s 38

Lalallama · 04/02/2022 12:53

I assume the grey symbols you count the sides of the shapes, the top row ones have 15 sides, the bottom row one has 11 (I think!). And it's 2 o'clock and three bananas, so it would be 2+3+3*11 - but I'm never sure whether you add them and then multiply (88) or multiply first, which I think would be 38.
