Maths Disagreement

One person thinks the answer is 165 and the other thinks 67, who is right?

YABU - 165
YANBU - 67

Or what’s the answer if both are wrong?

2+3+3x10

so either 80 or 35 if doing BODMAS

Cross post with everyone!

I think it's 38?

I initially thought it was 67 (3+4+4x15) but then I noticed the symbols were different, as other people have pointed out.

In the top sum, the shape has 15 sides in total (made up of a square,a pentagon and a hexagon) and is worth 15. The shape at the bottom is made up of just a pentagon and a hexagon so I assume it's worth 11.

The bunches of bananas in the top sums contain 4 bananas and are worth 4, but the bunches of bananas in the bottom sum only contain 3 bananas so I assume they are worth 3.

Finally, the clocks in the top sums are set to 3 o clock and are worth 3, whereas the clock in the bottom sum is set to 2 o clock, so I assume it's worth 2.

That would make the last sum 2+3+3x11=38.

ShadowPuppets · 04/02/2022 12:54

Reading the above I think 38 is also valid as you can read that grey shape as being 11 points or 2/3 of 15 I think. It depends how you want to interpret that shape.

Itsalmostanaccessory · 04/02/2022 12:54

It is 35.

You look at the number on the clock.
You count the number of bananas.
You count the shapes (each shape is worth 5).

It's
2 + 3 + 3 x 10

You do the multiplication first.

2 + 3 + 30

ChildHeadache · 04/02/2022 12:55

@Sideswiped so close! look at the clock time.

Sideswiped · 04/02/2022 12:56

Bugger....
I give up! Grin

Itsalmostanaccessory · 04/02/2022 12:56

Oh! The shapes arent 5 each. It's number of sides.

So

2 + 3 + 3 × 11

That's 38.

ghostyslovesheets · 04/02/2022 12:57

Mostlyjustrunning · 04/02/2022 12:57

Neither it’s 38

Pallando · 04/02/2022 12:58

I agree with 38.

These things wind me up though, as it is so much easier with algebra!

bruffin · 04/02/2022 12:58

I counted 13 sides to last pattern
Clocks are at 2 and 3 bananas
Entered into Excel which uses BODMAS
2+3+3x13=44

ellenpartridge · 04/02/2022 12:58

38

jimmyreckon · 04/02/2022 12:58

Agree with 38

2 on the clock
3 bananas
11 sides

2+3+ (3x11)

2+3+33

38

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 04/02/2022 12:59

There's not enough information to know whether the value of the grey shapes in the top line is 15 each because of the total sides/vertices (which would make the grey shape in the fourth line equal 11); or is the value of the top line 15 because each grey shape - regardless of vertices - has a value of 5 (which would make the grey shape in the fourth line equal 10).

SockFluffInTheBath · 04/02/2022 13:00

Depends on the value of the square, surely? How do we know what that is?

Blueroses99 · 04/02/2022 13:00

@Iamnotthe1

It's 38

The o'clock matters in the clock.
Each banana is worth 1.
The number of vertices matter with the shapes.

2 + 3 + 3 × 11
2 + 3 + 33
38

Yes this is how I got 38.

The clocks shows a different time, there is a different number of bananas and fewer shapes on the final line.

Itsalmostanaccessory · 04/02/2022 13:00

@bruffin

It's a 6 sided shape and a 5 sided shaped. That's 11.

If you count those 2 shapes together as 13 sides, then the other example sums dont work.

So if its number of sides then it is 11.

Bimblybomeyelash · 04/02/2022 13:00

I get 38.

The initial grey shapes have 15 corners.
There are 4 bananas.
The clock points to 3 o’clock.

The images In the final sum are slightly different.

NoVaxDjokovic · 04/02/2022 13:00

38

Blossom64265 · 04/02/2022 13:03

It’s 38

The grey symbol changes and the square is no longer present. It’s value changes to 11

The banana count goes down to 3

The clock changes to 2

Mamabear2020 · 04/02/2022 13:03

38

GlamGiraffe · 04/02/2022 13:03

Its 38

Viviennemary · 04/02/2022 13:04

All the shapes change if you look carefully even the bananas. Is this a trick question. I got told in maths if there are no brackets you just do the sum from start to finish. Has this changed now. Wouldn't surprise me.

bruffin · 04/02/2022 13:05
