Maths Disagreement

One person thinks the answer is 165 and the other thinks 67, who is right?

YABU - 165
YANBU - 67

Or what’s the answer if both are wrong?

4+3+3
(2+3+3) x 11 = 88

Numbers are right but BODMAS is
2+3+ (3*11) = 38

Daftasabroom · 04/02/2022 14:49

67

FawnFrenchieMum · 04/02/2022 14:49

In the last sun the Banana’s have a different amount, the clocks a different number and the grey shape is different. So I CBA to work it out.

jcyclops · 04/02/2022 14:51

I agree that you have to make assumptions to get 2+3+3x11=38

...but whatever assumptions you make about the value of the shapes, BIDMAS always applies.

11x3+3+2 = 38
2+3x11+3 = 38 (not 58)
2+11x3+3 = 38 (not 42)
3+11x3+2 = 38 (not 44)
2+3+11x3 = 38 (not 48)
2+3+3x11 = 38 (not 88)

@TulaOfDarkWater

Oh jeez, to be honest neither of us noticed that the shapes / bananas / time changed so obviously we are both wrong then!

IF all the symbols were exactly the same throughout though, so:

Grey thingy = 15
Bananas = 4
Clock = 3

What would the answer be then? What we’re really disagreeing on is where the brackets go I guess so is it:

(3 + 4 + 4) x 15

or

3 + 4 + (4 x 15)

In this instance it’s the second one, but as you’ve said it’s not correct in the picture.
LasHappyDaz · 04/02/2022 14:56

165

EerieSilence · 04/02/2022 14:57

I came up with 54.
15 + 15 + 15
4 + 4 + 15
6 + 3 + (3x15) = 9 + 45

HadEnoughOfBears · 04/02/2022 14:57

@longwayoff

I'm pleased I'm too old to be asked to help with homework as I have nonidea what BODMAS is. No, thanks, I like it that way.
It's nearly 40 years since I was taught BODMAS
Itsalmostanaccessory · 04/02/2022 14:58

@LasHappyDaz

165
Omg. No! Just no.

I'm assuming everyone on here is an adult. How many times does an adult need to be told the order of multiplying then adding?

I have a lot more respect for teachers now. It's just banging your head against a brick wall whilst the class tells you not to worry because it's actually cotton wool and not brick.

EerieSilence · 04/02/2022 14:59

Hm, on the other hand, I see the clock showing a different time and the pentagon in the last picture instead of a rectangle.

LasHappyDaz · 04/02/2022 14:59

diamonds / grey things = 15
bananas = 4
clock = 3

3+4+ 4x15 = 71

you have to multiply 4X15 = 60 +4+4+3 = 71

@Itsalmostanaccessory breathe, breathe!!! Grin I didn't RTFT and spotted my mistake. You sound a little highly strung? Wink

Itsalmostanaccessory · 04/02/2022 15:06

@LasHappyDaz

Actually no, it's just that mumsnet can actually be really helpful with maths. During lockdown, my son was given some problem solving sheets and they had to use algebra, make an equation to match the paragraph written and solve the problem. I was 100% sure she had made a mistake because one of them just didn't work. I asked on Google classrooms and she said it was fine and he had to try again.
I put the problem on mumsnet and they all agreed with me! And gave me a much more succinct way to show the teacher. The teacher then fixed the error. Very useful mumsnet!

But then this thread happens and so many people cannot do maths! But still want to post and ignore everything everyone else has said. That wouldnt have helped me at all!

@BarbaraofSeville

I know posters here like to insist everyone was taught BODMAS but I really, really, really wasn’t. Born 1975

You're about the same age as me and people our age lost months, if not years of primary and early secondary schooling due to teachers strikes. It really could be that you didn't learn BODMAS.

I did, but never learned a lot of English basics like adjectives, adverbs etc. As well as the frequent strikes, we also had a heating boiler that broke more often than it run (DM went to the same school as I did and I suspect it was the same boiler that had been there when she was 25 years earlier, but the building had been tripled in size in the interim). So it's not the case that everyone did learn everything.

I never thought of that, but you are right - that might be why! However the fact that I managed to get good results in all my homework with no comments like "should have multiplied before you added", an A in maths GCSE and a C in AS level (with a quarter of the required teaching because we were just put in for it to give us something to do in maths after doing GCSE a year early) without ever using or knowing about the existence of BODMAS (apart from "do brackets first") makes me think questions were not structured in such a way that BODMAS was ever necessary.
Itsalmostanaccessory · 04/02/2022 15:09

@LasHappyDaz

How is that 71?

Using that sum from the OP, it is 67. The numbers she has used are not correct in regards to the original puzzle but nevermind that. Using her numbers in that post, it comes to 67.

15 times by 4 is 60. Plus 3 then plus 4 is 67.

Those numbers are wrong anyway but it would never be 71!

LasHappyDaz · 04/02/2022 15:10

Never spotted the difference in grey shapes nor the clock, I obviously don't cut the mustard. In actual fact those shapes with different number of sides really annoy me now! grr Angry Grin It doesn't help that I am on my period and recovering from Covid. Off to find a less mentally challenging thread Wink

EerieSilence · 04/02/2022 15:12

Oh yes, looks like:
2 + 3 + (3 x 11) 38

LasHappyDaz · 04/02/2022 15:12

Ignoring the differences in shape sides / clock time

diamonds / grey things = 15
bananas = 4
clock = 3

3+4+ 4x15 = 71

multiply 4X15 = 60
60+4+4+3 = 71

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 04/02/2022 15:12

Given the way these things usually work, I would say it is more likely to be that the 15 for the multi-layered shape is made up of 6+5+4 (sides or vertices) than giving each shape an equal value of 5 (for no good reason except that there are 3 shapes and the total is 15).

But it's not that important, in the grand scheme of things. Unless it's how BloJo is calculating the next budget...

EerieSilence · 04/02/2022 15:13

And because I wanted to have a confirmation, I used the uncle google afterwards.

LasHappyDaz · 04/02/2022 15:13

I am lost....please can someone break it down step by step for me? including the value of each shape and why its that value please???

Itsalmostanaccessory · 04/02/2022 15:13

@LasHappyDaz

You've put an extra 4 in.

There are two 4s. You use one up when you times 15 by 4 to get 60. That leaves one 4 and one 3.
60 plus 4 plus 3 equals 67.

Stressedout1009 · 04/02/2022 15:14

2+3+(3×15) =50

Yes! that's right, thank you. Stupid silly mistake

And what's the breakdown of it taking into account the different shape? I thought the very shapes in the top row = 15. What does the grey shape at the bottom =? and why?
