Do you think Spotify should continue to host Joe Rogan's podcast?

Quite a few singers (Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Nils Lofgren to name a few) have said they want to have their music removed from Spotify as a protest against Spotify hosting Joe Rogan's podcast (they think he is spreading covid vaccine misinformation), so Spotify will have to choose between hosting their music or Joe Rogan's podcast.

I personally think this is ridiculous as Joe Rogan talks to a range of people about a range of different subjects and his podcasts are interesting and popular and people can always choose not to listen to them and even if they do, it doesn't mean they believe everything being said. I don't think Spotify should cave to such threats and I think this would set a dangerous precedent.

YANBU - Spotify should keep Joe Rogan's podcast.
YABU - Spotify should not keep Joe Rogan's podcast.

I think the world is getting a real problem with free speech.
We must have it, or it turns into an echo chamber.

I don't think they should remove him.

Diablo2 · 30/01/2022 17:42

I don't like this deplatforming of people with different views.

I disagree with anti-vaxxers but it's my mind to make up. They should be entitled to have the same courtesy. Otherwise, we're all in an echo chamber, aren't we, only being able to listen to sanctioned opinions. I think it's a dangerous road to go down.

Twillow · 30/01/2022 17:43

I think they should remove it. Free speech should not be a license to spout uncensored influential shit.

Lampshading · 30/01/2022 17:44

Meanwhile there are lots of abhorrent musicians who have their music on Spotify but these artists kicking up a fuss now have never been arsed. I find rapists, murderers and the like worse than someone sharing a different opinion personally.

lonelyapple · 30/01/2022 17:46

I think they should remove it. Free speech should not be a license to spout uncensored influential shit.
But nobody is being forced to listen to his podcast!

Yes! I'm staggered at the numbers of people who seem to be fully down with censorship these days.

If you think he's a huge problem and feeding out unquestioned disinformation then you have not listened to the podcast. He pushes back, forces explanation and fact checks assertions in real time - well his assistant Jamie does. He's a valuable and essential voice in these days of cancellation for wrong speak.

MrsTophamHat · 30/01/2022 17:48

On balance, I would say Yanbu because I don't generally believe in deplatforming. I'll qualify that by saying that I don't listen to him to be able to say whether he interrogates the claims made on his show or whether he lets things be stated as facts when they may not be.

Would I care if he interviewed someone about the healing power of crystals or the existence of ghosts? I suppose that antivax has more potential for harm than other 'alternative' theories.

TheAverageUser · 30/01/2022 17:48

If people are going to an MMA commentator for their health advise then we have bigger issues. Surely people can weigh up information and sources and come to sensible conclusions (I like to think).

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 30/01/2022 17:49

If they break their contract with him, he keeps $100m and will get a deal somewhere else.

I still can't find what was actually said verbatim, not that I looked hard, so I can't form an opinion on what was said. But it seems that instead of explaining exactly what was wrong, why it was wrong, and what is the correct information. Its delete the podcast, cancel Spotify, and encouraging artists to take their music off the platform. It's probably caused more damage, via the Streisand Effect, and more people will listen to the podcast. It's so short sighted.

LondonWolf · 30/01/2022 17:50

Neil Young? This Neil Young? The Neil Young who also has a tour coming up and seems to be trying to drum up some kind of interest in it?

No stranger than getting health advice from a computer geek (Bill Gates).

Nothing in particular has set these people off

He has interviewed a range of people.

Now how I do I listen to my favourite Nils Lofgren song?

Seriously, I think businesses can make their own choices but it seems a great shame to remove all dissenters. But I respect the right of a business to say "I don't want to publish/broadcast this person". It's their business model, they are going to adjust it for their profit and Joe Rogan will probably set up his own podcasting platform which will lead to more variety.

I'm not a fan of Rogan but I am not anti him.

I am a bit weirded out by everyone getting so worked up though.

There's another thread going on about things from the past, which for many includes books. I like a hard copy of a book because who knows what will happen to the digital editions when authors are accused of wrong think?

I watched the first episide of Miranda today and I can see some groups trying to get that episode banned.

sst1234 · 30/01/2022 18:26

Joe Rogan and Spotify must thank Neil Young for so much free publicity. Something tells me they will make more money out of Neil Young’s stunt that they will lose from not having his music. This is the problem with leftie ‘progressives’. Everytime they see a gun, they point it towards their own feet and shoot.

EmmaH2022 · 30/01/2022 18:26

How cheesy is this 😂
Reminds me of being a kid

MrsTophamHat · 30/01/2022 18:26

@EmmaH2022 is that the one where she dresses in drag? I thought that that wouldn't get made today.

I am enjoying the rewatch though. Such fun!

Hospedia · 30/01/2022 18:28

No one should be giving out medical advice unless medically qualified. Current medical advice is that vaccines work, they are safe for the vast majority, and the best protection from specific illnesses is to vaccinate (not just covid but vaccines in general). Someone on a public platform asserting that sun beds are safe, cigarettes help you stay slim, and seat belts are pointless would not be given airtime for those views, they would be told to either keep it to themselves/do it on non-work time, or go find another platform because we know such advice is dangerous/harmful. This is no different.

He is entitled to his opinions but Spotify is entitled not to air them and other artists are entitled to distance themselves from a platform that supports it.

sunshinesupermum · 30/01/2022 18:29

I take it you have never seen Neil Young live? He has no need to 'drum up interest in a tour'! They are usually sell-outs. He is a great musician whose work will still be played in years to come when Rogan will long be forgotten.

lljkk · 30/01/2022 18:30

I'm leaning towards yanbu...
My gut feeling is deplatforming is right action for advocating illegal behaviour, but not for having crazy ideas.

Does she shite that Spotify paid stupid money to host his tripe.

Well, she doesn't know, she's trying to find a shop that caters for her size

I saw the odd episode in the past but didn't see them all. I was honestly surprised that wasn't withdrawn but it wasn't on the BBC- which I don't have.

lljkk · 30/01/2022 18:31

*seem shite....

I've had the same thought and am buying hard copies of books and music that I think will be cancelled at some point. It's ridiculous we have come to this point!

The censorship of free speech at present will be written about in years to come and not favourably

Has anyone listened to said podcast?

TheGreatATuin · 30/01/2022 18:34

Absolutely YANBU. I'm not a particular Rogan fan but this current culture of people trying to bully others off of media platforms because they don't agree with them is deeply authoritarian and very worrying.
And this isn't just about covid. It's bloody everything right now. Name a topic and there'll be activists out there doing their damndest to stop anyone from hearing another point of view.
If Rogan or anyone else is spreading misinformation or saying awful things or whatever he's being accused of this time, then the answer is to counter it with clear facts and arguments, not just shut him down.
All that does is give conspiracy theorists more fuel for their fire. It helps nothing.

Bendyrabbit · 30/01/2022 18:39

His interview with Amanda Knox was fascinating and a really interesting look at how females are treated by the legal system. Just focusing on his covid stance is daft, he speaks to lots of people about different issues.

I don’t think we should be censoring people discussing the vaccine. Think of the people banned from Twitter for saying a vaccine side effect was menstrual changes, now something that’s accepted and being researched. Also the links to heart issues are now being discussed in the media.
It’s a new drug and we are seeing the positive and negative effects in real time. Stopping all discussion about it is sinister.
