I said this about Mrs Thatcher on another thread , but was reminded how they ignored AIDS and didn't handle that very well , so I am not sure how she would have handled this , but I suspect she would not have had parties etc
Still, it's all relative isn't it.

@DublinFemale

Can I please ask a question from you all?

I'm in Ireland, our electoral system is different to yourselves.

How many MPs can an area have? In my area, there are 4 TD's all representing my area currently all different parties so varied voices.

Just one MP per constituency. The size of the constituencies is based on population size rather than geographic area and they get reviewed every so often to reflect changing populations so each MP represents roughly the same number of people.
merrymouse · 26/01/2022 18:06

It isn't a pathetic defence, it is fact people who were at work gathered and ate and drank together. The NHS particularly had staff rooms full of donated treats where people had breaks, this outside in the rain eating sandwiches sounds like something the media would say.

How on Earth do you think any of that is relevant to Johnson’s behaviour?

Did any of these NHS staff invite their interior designers in to share the food? Their spouses?

You seem to be comparing staff being sent food by a grateful public who realised they didn’t always have time to shop (remember priority opening hours for NHS staff) and an illegal organised social event.

CSWife · 26/01/2022 18:06

I couldn't watch PMQ. What was the lawyer/liar quote and by whom was it said?

Truly it was a wonderful time for NHS workers what with the free biscuits and all the clapping.

jgw1 · 26/01/2022 18:13

I was hoping to be ambushed by some cake this evening but sadly instead was ambushed by some salad.

Has this happened to anyone else?

twelly · 26/01/2022 18:18

I think Boris Johnson needs to go but the last thing this country needs now is a leadership contest. I would have liked a national government during the pandemic - not on party lines which I think would have been the best way forward. Parties are a distraction - yes its hypocrisy and I do not like the way things are being twisted in order to suit the PM. However, that said I care more about the fact behaviour of moving the animals from Kabul - there the truth has had appalling consequences. I don't know what the answer is but I don't think the answer is internal party wrangling which will lead to even more distraction. If the Tory party got their house in order and had a quick replacement fine - but I don't think that would happen, so in one way I think Boris Johnson stays in post but weak and therefore has to do what others want. This is one of the problems of a landslide victory - a government whatever colour should be held to account - a landslide allows them a free reign

An MP said it quoting his constituents (apparently).

He said they'd expressed they'd rather be lead by a lawyer than a liar.

Notonthestairs · 26/01/2022 18:22

Lloyd Russell-Moyle said he'd rather be led by a lawyer than a liar.

He had to withdraw the comment.

It works as a slogan though!

@JaniieJones

'Anecdata about where people in the NHS ate their sandwiches at lunch is completely irrelevant. None of them were PM. ‘Everyone was doing it’ is such a pathetic defence for the head of state.'

It isn't a pathetic defence, it is fact people who were at work gathered and ate and drank together. The NHS particularly had staff rooms full of donated treats where people had breaks, this outside in the rain eating sandwiches sounds like something the media would say.

Obviously there is a line and we will have to see if and how many times it was crossed in the report. But a 3 man zoom quiz and a piece of cake with colleagues for 10mins does not sound like rule breaking imo. The 1am do before PP's funeral sounds like it probably was though.

It is pathetic, because what a few hard-pressed people in the NHS did, even when it broke the rules, is irrelevant to the fact that the head of government was repeatedly breaking the rules and closing his eyes to staff doing so

You've accounted for two social events in your final paragraph. How about the other 16 or whatever number it is that we're up to?

borntobequiet · 26/01/2022 18:37

Lloyd Russell-Moyle is a top-notch numpty. But that was a nice soundbite.

I got a jacket potato with cheese. I'm still hoping for an apple danish but I don't think it is going to happen.
DuncinToffee · 26/01/2022 18:42

Led by Donkeys have been projecting the stories of people who DID follow the rules outside Conservative Party HQ all day

In case anyone needs reminding @donkeys

Do you think if I balance a cake on the kitchen door before I leave in the morning and it ambushes me when I get home that counts?

I'm on a five hour training course which finishes at 9pm. I'm expecting to be ambushed by a glass of wine and dinner at 8pm or I'll be filing for divorce

I just wish that they would leave Nowzad alone. It was never about animals before people. The charity raised funds for their own plane. They had 250 seats and wanted to give every single one to an eligible refugee. The animals would have gone in the cargo hold where people can't travel. Pen Farthing is a true hero, not because of his love of cats and dogs but for his love and commitment to his staff and the Afghanistani people in general. Everything that the government and media has thrown at him since has been borne out of embarrassment, because he showed them up.

DuncinToffee · 26/01/2022 19:33

It's not about Nowzad, it is about Johnson lying about him authorising it.

Prescottdanni123 · 26/01/2022 19:35

@DuncinToffee

The media is still spouting the extremely damaging 'Animals before people' bullshit

This and I'm quite angry Pen and Nowzad are being dragged back into this debacle. Pen and his staff weren't having nice little parties but being tear gassed and having AK47s pointed at them.

This is so important.

Other people who did good are being twisted into bad people due to his lies.

Pen Farthing always wanted to help Afghans and animals. He never wanted priority. Just permission to fly and a slot.

I think so, I mean if you just innocently balance a cake on a kitchen door it is hardly your responsibility if it just ambushes you. I think you'd be in the clear with that one.
Peregrina · 26/01/2022 20:27

Pen Farthing always wanted to help Afghans and animals. He never wanted priority. Just permission to fly and a slot.

And this wouldn't have been a problem if the Foreign Secretary had seen to it that all those Afghans that had been promised they could come to the UK had been evacuated promptly. It had been known for some months that the Americans were going to pull out, so this could have been put in hand in May - July. But no, lounging on the beach was more important at that moment.

FatFredsFriedEgg · 26/01/2022 20:42

Isn't it the slot that's the problem? That slot could have been used by a larger plane to evacuate more people.

The US took over 800 people out on one C17 flight.

@Cornettoninja

The Speaker said no he wasn't having that and there had been heated words between him and JRM

I don’t condone violence at all but I’m constantly amazed that JRM isn’t sporting a black eye more often.

IKWYM. He has a very punchable face.
