To be really enjoying Boris Johnson's downfall Part 2 http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/4459992-To-be-really-enjoying-Boris-Johnsons-downfall-Part-2

'This isthe most moving account I’ve seen of why people are so angry. It’s heartbreaking.'

I can't zoom on that but I'll guess it's because homeschooling, couldn't visit a loved one, felt isolated, couldn't attend a funeral. All absolutely horrible things we all endured to reduce the spread.

However people still went to work, still had refreshments in the workplace with their colleagues.

These are the 2 completely different set of scenarios.

'BJ & his Govt set the law on CV restrictions'

Which Starmer voted on. Yet he still had nibbles with colleagues. No, I don't want him investigating it is an attempt to make some see that food and a beer at work was allowed. Maybe not the 1am basement party..

Notonthestairs · 28/01/2022 17:01

Refreshments = trestle tables of BYOB and suitcases of booze.
All shared amongst assorted departments and randoms.
But you know that.

At completely different point in time without any evidence that people arranged invites outside of their department.

How are you not getting this?

Booklover3 · 28/01/2022 17:04

I agree @Thedogscollar

22itsallnew · 28/01/2022 17:07

@Florianus But I think that many people have no idea that the country is run by the civil service - politicians simply don't have the time

Because they are too busy eating cake? Or can you let us know from your 'insights' what is taking up politicians time if they are not running the country or doing consituency work? As that is what they are paid to do with taxpayers money? Unless of course they are too busy working on their lucrrative 2nd and 3rd jobs?

Are we sure that Starmer voted for the regulations at the time he drank that beer? I have a recollection that many of the changes to the rules were introduced by Ministers by Statutory Instrument rather than by Act of Parliament.
TwentyFirstCenturyTricoteuse · 28/01/2022 17:13

Oh for fucks sake Janiie give it a rest. ,By were his wife and decorator at these crucial work meetings? Any time you fancy answering is fine.

Florianus · 28/01/2022 17:15

To all those defending the government HAVE SOME FUCKING COMPASSION!!!!!
Calm down dear, you'll do yourself a mischief.

How old are your DC are that you homeschooled? primary aged, younger or older? Did they miss exams or leaving dos? Were you working from home too? How did you find it? Are you children having problems catching up? I did ask yesterday but you never said how you'd personally experienced lockdowns?

This thread is reaching full.

So I have taken the liberty of starting a new one.

The OP is on this page. It is a photo of a letter that was written by a dying young Mum who had to attend hospital for chemo on her own, have major surgery on her own with no visitors permitted. All to stay within the rules set by this govt.

I'm not sure why I am hoping you can actually see the damage this govt has caused. Your opinion seems to be it will be business as usual with Boris at the helm.

I will never ever forgive them for the way they have handled the whole pandemic. I work in the NHS so have a first hand knowledge of what it was like and still is to some degree.

You seem blind to his many many many faults which is fine that is your choice. I just can't comprehend why.

Why should I 'give it a rest'. Do you just want folk agreeing with each other? Debates don't tend to work like that.

The decorator I believe denied being at any 'party' but may have been asking BJ something, we don't know yet do we.

If lines were crossed fine, civil servants at the 1am do will no doubt face consequences.

However refreshments at work were permitted and10mins is not a party by any stretch of the imagination.

jgw1 · 28/01/2022 17:23

@JaniieJones Can I check, if I break into your home for 10 minutes am I right in thinking that it is not a burglary by any stretch of your vivid imagination?

Because they have neither the time nor the skill. For many MPs, travelling takes up to two days a week. The need to appear in their constituency takes up Saturdays. Many MPs assist nearby colleagues in canvassing. Then there are the sub-committee meetings, the Westminster Hall debates, not to mention cabinet meetings and, for ministers, frequent meetings with professional associations. Some get invited to school speech days, others to WI meetings. Then there are the constiuency meetings .... it just goes on and on.

I was thinking the other day, listening to Liz Truss's admonitions of Vladimir Putin, that nobody in their right mind would leave it up to her to invent something to say. She has no experience of diplomacy and could easily spark a war with the wrong words. What she said was what her Permanent Secretary wanted her to say. Its the same with almost all departments - people don't like the expression because they want to blame politicians - but ministers are just mouthpieces for their departments.

@Flowertailbird @TwentyFirstCenturyTricoteuse @Thedogscollar

some posters on here are so keen to minimise Johnson's behaviour they appear too have lost all compassion for what others have been through (not parties!) Don't worry the majority of sane people know right from wrong & that the PM should not have been partying during a period of national crisis, when such sacrifices were being made by the public.

SueSaid · 28/01/2022 17:27

'Can I check, if I break into your home for 10 minutes am I right in thinking that it is not a burglary by any stretch of your vivid imagination'

We've been through this. It isn't 2 comparable scenarios.

A better one would be I meet you in a staffroom for coffee and cake for 10mins. Have we been to a party? No, no we haven't.

Indeed we have been through it several times. But you have yet to tell us how long one has to be at a party before one is at it, and also haven't explained why you think it is fine for 56year old Big Baby to have a birthday party, while legislating that 5 year olds can't.

some posters on here are so keen to minimise Johnson's behaviour

Other posters on here are keen to get an accurate report of what went on in Partygate, although thanks to the Met it looks like we may have to wait many weeks - and just wait until the lawyers crash in with their protracted arguments on how hastily drawn-up legislation should be interpreted.

SueSaid · 28/01/2022 17:32

'they appear too have lost all compassion for what others have been through '

Absolutely not, I have empathy for those that have suffered. We have endured like everyone else however I can see why the restrictions were needed to reduce spread.

I can also see when my dh is at work the same socialising rules didn't apply. Pubs may have been shut but work cafeterias were open.

TwentyFirstCenturyTricoteuse · 28/01/2022 17:32

Have you invited your spouse and random tradespeople to the staffroom for the cake?

ClaudineClare · 28/01/2022 17:33

@Florianus, which Quango did you work for?

This is a good Secret Barrister article on lack of coherence between different fines and punishments.
