Hi vegans!

Now I have your attention, can you please tell me what you would love to be seved at a dinner party for your starter main and dessert? DPs best friend's girlfriend is vegan and I don't want to palm her off with yet another stuffed pepper/mushroom risotto combo. She must be sick of it!

Bonus points for a crowd pleaser that'll do for everyone!

There's loads of fantastic vegetarian recipes on the Ottolenghi website, which I'm sure could be adapted to vegan.

Personally I'd steer clear of anything involving vegan cheese as it can be a bit hit and miss, but I've used soy cream and plant milk before (as a carnivore) and found they work well.

a steak

maddiemookins16mum · 13/01/2022 20:43

I made a Sunday Dinner pie last time, so all the veggies, stuffing and heck vegan sausages cooked (the day before) and put in a pie the next day, served with lovely veg and gravy (non meat instant but hey).

NanooCov · 13/01/2022 20:48

I really rate this recipe - just make sure you use a vegan dark chocolate and check your soy sauce is vegan too (most are). I'm not vegan BTW but have cooked this for vegan friends.

BookFiend4Life · 13/01/2022 20:50

Huge number of excellent and unique vegan recipes for a party/crowd here, you could really impress her with some of these! www.badmanners.com/recipes

This is a really good one that they serve in vegan restaurant

I Usually do sesame rice with it 🍛

whatwasIgoingtosay · 13/01/2022 20:51

I'm not vegan but I love a nut roast! Even my commitedly carnivore DH loves them.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 13/01/2022 20:52

Bit of variation on the Indian theme, I highly recommend Bosh Bhaji Burgers. We aren't vegan and these were a real crowd pleaser.

HolidayNanny · 13/01/2022 20:52

Nothing with quorn! Makes a lot of people sick.

godmum56 · 13/01/2022 20:53

another vote for asking her

www.waitrose.com/home/recipes/recipe_directory/b/baked-aubergine-withredricesmokedtofu.html

This made with vegan yogurt or served with hummus.

VelmaandShaggy · 13/01/2022 20:57

Grin I hate them too, glowy, ethical bastards

Wellington17 · 13/01/2022 20:58

Make this - www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/kadala-curry

And a raita, but with soy yoghurt and then roast a chicken so the non vegans can add it if the like!

Did this over Christmas for a dinner party and it was AMAZING and easy

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/01/2022 20:58

That mushroom and ale pie sounds lovely, but I'd be careful about ready-made puff pastry, as most of it contains palm oil, which is really best avoided on environmental grounds. I'm not a vegan or vegetarian, so I look for puff pastry made with butter, which is not easy to find and more expensive, and obviously no good for vegans anyway.

One way round this is to make your own pastry using some sort of vegan fat that doesn't include palm oil.

AlwaysLatte · 13/01/2022 20:59

Love it! Grin

hugr · 13/01/2022 21:00

I'm not vegan but was thinking about making sweetcorn and courgette fritters as a side to a curry or chilli! Chilli is easy to make vegan without sacrificing much flavour

indiesearcher · 13/01/2022 21:00

Ottolenghi whole cauliflower and green tahini sauce. It's just yum.

Make a dish of it with some yummy sweet potato mash and a Middle Eastern inspired side salad?

LillethCrane · 13/01/2022 21:03

Tom Kerridge’s Samosa Pie is amazing. It’s a meat dish, but my daughter is vegetarian so I just substitute some ingredients and it’s so tasty and actually vegan rather than veggie. The whole family, including the meat eaters love it:

www.itv.com/thismorning/articles/pork-samosa-pie-tom-kerridge-recipe

Substitute minced pork for 2 tins of lentils, the can of beef consommé for a can of French onion soup, and the chicken stock for veg stock.

Greenrubber · 13/01/2022 21:04

My favourite meal is

Smoked tofu marinated in liquid seasoning and smoked paprika then fried until crispy served with both sweet and white potatoes peeled par boiled the roasted with lemon, garlic, powdered stock and a little oil taste amazing like really amazing
And I serve it with either lots of steamed veg or a nice salad
Simple bit delicious

For starters I would have a nice bread with olives some hummus some carrot sticks etc
And for pudding I would get a nice ice cream the vegan ones like wicked are good so is Swedish glaze vanilla if u want a plain one or go with something else

Marks and Spencer have a new vegan range now for veganuary so might be worth a look

Nickwinkle · 13/01/2022 21:05

Starter: For the love of god - nothing with mushroom
Main: Same as above
Dessert: Fruit sorbet, also no mushrooms

On a serious note Grin
What is it that you're making for yourselves? It's honestly nicer to be given a veggie/vegan version of what everyone else is eating as then you don't feel weird and singled out. There are a lot of alternatives out there that make it super simple to do :)

TopCatsTopHat · 13/01/2022 21:09

Boojabooja do the Best vegan ice cream ever!

Wow, I’m nicking that idea.
lemonjam · 13/01/2022 21:12

Haha 😂

Either - curry (cauliflowers or chickpea?) not too spicy please but maybe some spicy aloo gobi at the side and samosas, some naans are vegan, mango chutney!

Or - pasta, I just love pasta 😍

Fruit and cheapo Swedish glacé ice cream for puds

Happy days.

Without doubt Jamie Oliver's vegan shepherd's pie followed by Demuth's vegan sticky toffee pudding!
