Hi vegans!

Now I have your attention, can you please tell me what you would love to be seved at a dinner party for your starter main and dessert? DPs best friend's girlfriend is vegan and I don't want to palm her off with yet another stuffed pepper/mushroom risotto combo. She must be sick of it!

Bonus points for a crowd pleaser that'll do for everyone!

I'm not vegan but I like vegan food . What I don't like is all the fake meat stuff . I like cottage pie made with lentils or Spanish bean casserole with mashed potato . I would enjoy the stuffed pepper and mushroom risotto ! I do love various curries but it's a bit annoying some times when you go out and all the vegan food is quite highly spiced, I think in order to appeal to people who find vegetables boring .

endofthelinefinally · 13/01/2022 21:38

Posted too soon. Fried tofu is really tasty (you buy it ready fried and slice it). Large shiitake mushrooms are delicious and have a really meaty texture, much nicer than Quorn. A spoonful of Laoganma on the side really lifts the flavours. You can serve with noodles or rice. Add lots of veg including beans for protein.

Bosch's ultimate chilli is really good - rich and smoky

@BackBackBack

Must admit I love mushroom risotto so I'm always happy to see it!

Does she like curry? There are some fab dhals which taste brilliant and are easy to make (and you might enjoy them as well).

A good mushroom risotto is wonderful, I ordered it for myself at our daughter's wedding reception and I'm not even merely vegetarian.
notyouagainn · 13/01/2022 21:40

Hairy bikers do a fantastic cauli and coconut curry. But it depends what you are doing for everyone else really. Just do a vegan version. Easier on you.

elfycat · 13/01/2022 21:40

What about a quick vegan chilli (even caveman-carnivore-DH likes it). I got compliments and asked for the recipe at a party where vegans were going to not say anything and just nibble on what there was available. I was a bit embarrassed to admit how quick/cheap it was.

Serves 4 ish

Tin kidney beans in slight chilli sauce
Tin 5 bean mix
Tin mixed bean salad ala Asda
2x Tin chopped tomatoes
Vegan friendly Chilli packet (colemans, supermarket own)
2 onions
bit of oil

Chop onions and gently fry in oil for a bit until it looks right to you. Then add rest of ingredients and boil a bit (20+ mins, but longer and slower brings out more flavour).

Bung on rice.

Serve - avocado type side (we mash ours with garlic and lemon juice)
maybe some tortilla chips

Love this OP! Grin what are you cooking for everybody else? I may be able to help you with a version of that? Ask her for some of her favourites?
I went to a dinner party where the host made home made pizza and made mine beautifully with vegan feta and other toppings, home made Wedges, vegan mayo. Simple but lovely

SarahBellam · 13/01/2022 21:43

@Rubyupbeat

Anything but lasagne, curry or bolognese, oh and frozen vegan burger.
OK, so what would you like? Help us, please. We’re not mind readers. We want to give you something you’d like to eat. We want you to have a nice time with us. I would LOVE it if a vegan invitee messaged me and sent me a link to a great recipe or two. Most of us aren’t vegan and aren’t interested in becoming vegan but fully respect your choices. I’d be thrilled to get a bit of a steer on what to cook.
zurigirl · 13/01/2022 21:47

Oops, just realised you wanted more than just main meals...

If you're doing a curry and you're worried about it being too spicy, you could always offer to do a mango lassi alongside it?

Add to a blender:

  • 200ml Alpro coconut drink (or almond and coconut - more subtle flavour)
  • 2 tbsp soy yoghurt
  • 2-3 tbsp mango puree (but could probably also use frozen mango chunks)
  • 1/2 tbsp lime juice
  • pinch of sea salt
Blend

If you were wanting to make a dessert yourself, a lemon and lime sorbet is easy and also really refreshing. Just make sure not to follow a recipe that uses egg.

Or if you were wanting to buy something easy, this is my new favourite ice cream: Roar salted caramel

For something more substantial (and assuming you have a bit of time on your hands), this recipe is amazing: Vegan Bakewell tart

Or the Gü Free From cheesecakes are really good and I think they look fancy enough to serve to guests:
Chocolate
Lemon

Curry's are a huge hit here!! Sweet potato and spinach topped with crispy onions and fresh green chilli, BBC good food have some good vegan curry sauce recipes. We aren't vegan but have been trying to cut down on eating meat as much as pos.

Teaforme123 · 13/01/2022 21:49

A lovely bean chilli with rice, vegan applewood smoked cheese and oatly vegan creme fraiche. That is what I make my vegan sister and she loves it. M&S plant kitchen have lovely things also especially for starters or deserts.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 13/01/2022 21:50

Ooh, if you fancy a very light, fresh, convivial starter, I love this one (which some friends brought back the idea for from South Africa). Make a palm sugar syrup from jaggery (can get in Waitrose ingredients section) and have it in small bowls or jugs people can reach from everywhere on the table. Have lots of large-ish spinach leaves on a big flat plate to use as mini-wraps and lots of tiny bowls with high-flavour raw ingredients to put into the spinach leaves, then roll them up like a little cone with ingredients rolled up inside, pour the syrup in and shove it all in mouth. It's fab - the syrup softens the crazy flavours.

Little bowls of finely chopped:
lemon peel
Red chilli
Garlic
Lemongrass
Peanuts
Dessicated coconut
Root ginger

Mulhollandmagoo · 13/01/2022 21:50

@TheUnexpectedPickle

Homemade curry night sounds like a winner!

And some kind of lovely sorbet for dessert.

I'm hungry now

For dessert have a goose in M&S. Their plant kitchen range is brilliant, even for your non-vegan diners.
OfCourseIDontMind · 13/01/2022 21:56

ok here are some ideas that have had really good responses (from non vegetarians). Hope it helps.
Cajun peanut soup. It's pretty hearty this the closest recipe I can find online.
yupitsvegan.com/west-african-peanut-soup/
Pulled jackfruit, like a vegan version of pulled pork. It's well tasty.
www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/vegan-pulled-jackfruit
What about a fruit sorbet for dessert? They're light and tasty for everyone.
For simplicity you could always substitute meat for a baked mushroom or quorn product?

OfCourseIDontMind · 13/01/2022 21:57

Or butter free apple pie?

StrawberrySquash · 13/01/2022 22:01

nsnutrition.co.uk/ottolenghis-roasted-aubergine-saffron-yoghurt/ this is very good and I'm sure would work with vegan yogurt.

1forAll74 · 13/01/2022 22:01

I don't hate vegans, but would not have them round for meals, They tend to go on about their eating choices too much, which others do not wan't to talk about. They usually will tell you about a fantastic new vegan eating place, just opened in the town,, as though you would be interested in it.

Benjaminsniddlegrass · 13/01/2022 22:04

This little number is delicious and my very not vegan DH & DB were very happy to eat it!

zurigirl · 13/01/2022 22:05

For whoever suggested M&S, I tried their truffle and potato pies over Christmas and they were so good! So I'd definitely recommend those as long as they weren't just a seasonal item.

Here are some more of my favourites, because why note. Smile

Black eyed pea curry

Louisiana gumbo

TopCatsTopHat · 13/01/2022 22:06

@LadyMonicaBaddingham

Dal is one of my favourite foods, so I'm always happy to serve it to a convenient vegan anyone.
Hehehehe. Made me smile.
LemonDrizzles · 13/01/2022 22:07

Crowd pleaser, yes. Even non vegans eat it
Depends if they are ok with spices

I've just spent a few days cooking with vegan dishes in mind. Root vegetable curry was the biggest hit I think. I served it with cumin roast cauliflower, a soya yoghurt & coriander dip and naan bread.

DSis made herself an apple pie just using cooking apples and bought vegan pastry which looked really nice. There are various vegan creams/custard/ice cream you can get to serve desserts with.

AnathemaPulsifer · 13/01/2022 22:17
