Hi vegans!

Now I have your attention, can you please tell me what you would love to be seved at a dinner party for your starter main and dessert? DPs best friend's girlfriend is vegan and I don't want to palm her off with yet another stuffed pepper/mushroom risotto combo. She must be sick of it!

Bonus points for a crowd pleaser that'll do for everyone!

Dhal and rice, the ultimate vegan classic.

WakingFromDreams · 13/01/2022 21:16

I love chickpeas, mushroom & spinach curry.

And meat free lasagne / bolognaise / chilli.

mrsm43s · 13/01/2022 21:18

@TheUnexpectedPickle I don't know yet, was gonna establish the vegan menu and go from there, especially if the vegan food will be a crowd pleaser!

If you're planning to use highly processed vegan "meat substitutes" (e.g quorn/soy/nut milks etc) it might be worth checking with other guests that they're OK with that as they can cause a lot of adverse reactions. And as a meat eater, going to dinner at a meat eaters house, it wouldn't occur to me to tell you I could't eat quorn/soya based meat replacements.

If you're going for recipes that are just vegetables/pulses, vegetable oils and herbs/spices, you're probably good.

Personally, I'd think something like a three bean chilli would be your best bet, served with a green salad and maybe wedges. Probably washed down with a load of margaritas! Probably guac/salsa and tortillas as a starter. something lime-y for pud. Plus tequilla slammers.

AdoraBell · 13/01/2022 21:19

When DDs were younger I used to do a pasta dish with veg/tomato sauce. Finely chopped onion, carrots and celery with garlic and dried oregano, sauté and add canned tomatoes. We aren’t vegetarian but they loved this dish.

You can add lentils or other beans for protein if required. Obviously any favoured veg would work too. Adjust seasonings and serve with rice etc instead of pasta.

Luckydog7 · 13/01/2022 21:22

Onion bhajis are surprisingly easy to make. good for a starter with mango chutney.

Then a curry as above,

finish with a cooling sorbet after all the spice

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 13/01/2022 21:23

Dal is one of my favourite foods, so I'm always happy to serve it to a convenient vegan anyone.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 13/01/2022 21:23

Mapo Tofu with stirfry is always nice.
Vegan Katsu curry with fried aubergine and sweet potato
Thai green or red curry with coconut rice
Spinach dal with nan
Quinoah salad with BBQ seitan
There are millions of options

fitflopqueen · 13/01/2022 21:24

I made this for dinner this evening, really lovely, could add extra beans/pulses, rice side dish and crusty bread. (carnivores here)

Thefrenchconnection1 · 13/01/2022 21:25

Falafel for starters!

Reallycantbesarsed · 13/01/2022 21:26

Google veggie restaurants in Brighton…food is absolutely gorgeous. You will get so many ideas !

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 13/01/2022 21:26

You could make some sushi as a starter. Tofu, avocado or radish work well for vegan sushi.

Innocenta · 13/01/2022 21:26

Lots of great ideas here; am taking notes! Thanks for starting this, OP Grin

Omicrone · 13/01/2022 21:26

@Mia184

Chili sans carne. I once served it alongside a normal chili con carne to 10 meat eaters (I am not vegan) and the vegan version was unanimously declared the better one. The spices were the same, the only difference was that the meatless chili contained soy granules instead of meat.
Seriously?

I have nothing against vegan food, in fact I like to eat quite a lot of plant based stuff these days. But a load of meat eaters unanimously thought that something made with 'soy granules' tasted better than something made with actual meat and all its juicy flavours?

PurpleDaisies · 13/01/2022 21:27

www.cookwithmanali.com/restaurant-style-vegetable-biryani/

This is an excellent biryani. That site has loads of great recipes.

Innocenta · 13/01/2022 21:27

@Omicrone Can we not have one vegan thread without this...?

StillWeRise · 13/01/2022 21:28
  1. no quorn
  2. I don't think I'd like a dinner where my main dish was an accompaniment to a roast chicken that the others were having, especially if the roast chicken was put whole on the table and then carved up in front of me Shock I don't normally mind eating with carnivores but that's going a bit far
  3. It would be nicest if everyone ate the same delicious meal
  4. no quorn
  5. no other meat substitute
Hesma · 13/01/2022 21:28

You can make a lovely vegan cake by taking Betty Crocker cake mix and mixing with a can of fizzy pop then baking. Their icings are vegan too

zurigirl · 13/01/2022 21:30

Ahaha, you got me! Wink

Vegan since first lockdown.

The first recipe I found and loved was this one:

Bean and red lentil chilli

I like to have it with vegan parmesan, chopped avocado, tortilla chips (be careful, not all are vegan).

Some of my other favourites:

Mango tofu red Thai curry

Tofu cashew masala

You can find a vegan naan to go with this in Morrisons, it's the Clay Oven Bakery brand.

Or another favourite (but not really a one-pot meal) would be something like salt and pepper tofu (my tip: use half szechuan pepper, half black pepper) with rice, veggies and a sticky lemon sauce. Delicious!

speakout · 13/01/2022 21:30

I am getting sick of the "hate" threads.
Hate New York Hate vegans, hate London.

Do people really get so sound up about such insignificant things? I cater for several vegans, friends and family, and altough not vegan myself eat very little meat and dairy.
I find the easiest thing to to is make a vegan meal and add some meat options. Most meat eaters will enjoy vegan food too and eat both.
So a lebanese stew with chickpeas and green beans, batatta hara potatoes, which everyone will love, rice pilaf, flatbreads and lamb kofta for those that love meat.
Morrocan tagine with beans and root veg, cous cous, salad and pitta, hot harissa and some lamb skewers as a side dish.
,Same with Indian= daal, rice, chapatis, veg sabsi, poppadom, veg pakoras and pickle, chicken tikka thighs as a side.
I dind it easier to plan whole vegan meal then add meat as an option. Many meat eaters love vegan food too.

TheNoonBell · 13/01/2022 21:31

Just give them some microwave cheap ready meal whilst the rest of you dismember a whole suckling pig.

endofthelinefinally · 13/01/2022 21:32

Do you have a Chinese supermarket near you OP? I make vegan stir fries and everybody loves them. But you need to get the right ingredients.

TopCatsTopHat · 13/01/2022 21:32

speakout think you might have missed the joke.

ArabellaScott · 13/01/2022 21:36

Sweet potato tagine is deeeeelicious.

Ylvamoon · 13/01/2022 21:38

STARTER: Chick pea fritters and a lovely leavey Salad ...
MAIN: as already suggested veggie/ lentil curry
PUDDING: sorry, I am boring and would go with a fruit salad -made with an juice & nut dressing finished off with a lovely coca / cinnamon/ vanilla type Sorbet...

ClafoutisSurprise · 13/01/2022 21:38

My absolute favourite vegan meal is Thai curry and sticky rice - just make sure that if you’re using a pre-made paste it doesn’t contain shrimp paste as some do. You can substitute fish sauce for soy sauce. Yellow curry with deep fried tofu from the Chinese supermarket and vegetables is heavenly.

Pannacotta made with non-dairy milk and a vegan gelatin substitute for afters. Vanilla with a berry or dark chocolate sauce.
