Hi vegans!

Now I have your attention, can you please tell me what you would love to be seved at a dinner party for your starter main and dessert? DPs best friend's girlfriend is vegan and I don't want to palm her off with yet another stuffed pepper/mushroom risotto combo. She must be sick of it!

Bonus points for a crowd pleaser that'll do for everyone!

Pretty much anything from Meera Sodha’s Guardian column.

No sense of humour these days…

I'm also a big fan of fabulous salads with pomegranate seeds, toasted pine nuts, grated beets carrot with fabulous crusty bread and oils for dipping etc etc

TheUnexpectedPickle · 13/01/2022 20:19

@Lockheart

Why don't you ask her what she'd like?

We can recommend no end of vegan things but they're fuck all use if she doesn't like them or might be allergic.

I did!!!

Saag aloo, tarka dhal made with oil instead of ghee, chapatis, chutney.

PurpleDaisies · 13/01/2022 20:20

What are you cooking for everyone else? It would be weird to do everyone an italian feast and give her a curry.

StripeyDeckchair · 13/01/2022 20:21

Riverfront root veg crumble
Vegan brownies with raspberry sorbet

StoopitAutocarrot · 13/01/2022 20:21

I love dip style starters, so something with guacamole, salsa, humous, with fancy tortilla chips. Or a vegan version of French onion soup!

For main I’d love sweet potato wedges with a chilli, Greek inspired cauliflower stew ( Jamie’s veg book) or pasta with veg meatballs and a tomato sauce.

conflictednow · 13/01/2022 20:22

If you can be bothered, lots of tapas are vegan, then you can have a show stopper table look. Patatas bravas, garlic mushrooms, olives, chick pea and spinach one from Seville I think, green beans and tomatoes, those little green spicy pepper like chiillis but not as bad (can't remember the name sorry).

kitkat71 · 13/01/2022 20:22

I recommend the falafel recipe from BOSH, p152 the recipe includes Greek salad and homemade hummus. And everyone loves it.

I don't know yet, was gonna establish the vegan menu and go from there, especially if the vegan food will be a crowd pleaser!

I was going to suggest this @DreamerSeven !! It’s delish.

I’d prob do a vegan menu along the lines of

Starter: pear watercress and walnut salad dressed with a little high quality olive oil (add Stilton for non vegans if you like)

Main: mushroom ragu with polenta, spinach and red onion side

Dessert: lemon sorbet with raspberries and dark chocolate

What sorts of things do you like to cook?

TheUnexpectedPickle · 13/01/2022 20:25

Homemade curry night sounds like a winner!

And some kind of lovely sorbet for dessert.

I'm hungry now

Make 3-4 curries, serve with tandoori chicken, rice and fresh chapattis (or if you live in a city with a naan shop fresh naan, miss them). Curries reheat well so make ahead. Suggestions are a chickpea dal, a mushroom bhaji and a cauliflower coconut curry.

Yes! Do a selection of curries for everyone, with most vegan but a couple with meat that meat eaters can have.

PurpleDaisies · 13/01/2022 20:28

The easiest vegan crowd pleaser is to do an Indian feast.
Pakora, samosas, bhajis to start, maybe with popadums and a pickle tray
A selection of dal and curries for main with Nan and rice, or a biryani

Brownies and ice cream for pudding (not very Indian but a crowd pleaser!). Ben and Jerry’s non dairy brownie ice cream is amazing

WildFlowerBees · 13/01/2022 20:29

Thai green papaya salad, A Thai curry, with coconut rice and mango sorbet. Yum.

KissKissButtCheek · 13/01/2022 20:31

DD is vegan and loves cous-cous with quorn chicken pieces, peppers, onions and whatever else thrown in, but not sure if it's suitable for a lovely dinner party Smile
Dipped cauliflower wings are another hit
For dessert coconut ice cream with fresh fruit maybe x

RainyDayWellySocks · 13/01/2022 20:31

Fajitas please!

I love this^. You'd have to use vegan chocolate.

catfunk · 13/01/2022 20:36

I've done before

  • Asian slaw (shredded cabbage, carrot, spring onions, petit poi's, soy, lime, rice wine vinegar)
  • veggie spring rolls
  • sweet potato and spinach satay curry (red curry paste, coconut milk, peanut butter)
  • big pot of coriander rice

Or Indian ?

  • chickpea curry
  • Bhahis
  • Dahl
