To be saddened, and yet also angry, that the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Reunion show totally blanked JK Rowling?

I mean, she did create the bloody thing! Hmm

Just watched it. 100 minutes of the young cast who were the main characters (Harry, Ron, Hermione, Malfoy, Neville Longbottom, The Weasley brothers, etc,) gushing over one another. Laughing and hugging and kissing, and reminiscing and brushing tears from their cheeks, as they whispered 'we're family... always have been, always will be.......'

Not ONE mention of the woman who created it all, and gave them the lives they have now. In fact many people were interviewed, including Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, Gary Oldman, Robbie Coltrane, Bonnie wright, Alfred Enoch, Toby Jones, Mark Williams, Jason Isaacs, etc. Not ONE of them mentioned JK Rowling.

All we got featuring JK, was two 10 to 15 second clips of footage from an interview she did 3 years ago. The narrator mentioned her ONCE! That's it! None of the 'stars' mentioned her, or thanked her for ANYthing. As I said, Harry Potter exists because of HER. Yet she was not deemed worthy of a mention or a thank you.

AIBU to think it's sad and also bloody infuriating, that she has been blanked in this manner? IMO, it's clearly because of the accusations of her being 'transphobic,' (which I don't think she is frankly,) and I am dismayed and somewhat disgusted, that these young people whose careers exist because of JK Rowling, are now treating her like a pariah.

I am a huge fan of Harry Potter, both the books and the films, and this has sullied it all for me now.

She was mentioned quite a lot all throughout.

Agree that the interviews with her were weird, but she was definitely spoken about and given credit.

ninnynonny · 08/01/2022 14:58

@NannaMcPhoo

I doubt she will be the that bothered. The event sounds like a who's who of sanctimonious arseholes.
Hahaha. Yep, probably. I've had a load of paint to watch dry each time it's been on.

"Not ONE mention of the woman who created it all...The narrator mentioned her ONCE..."

Cracking opening post.

phoenixrosehere · 08/01/2022 15:03

I agree with you OP and I haven’t watched it because I don’t see how you can have a decent Harry Potter programme without the wonderful woman that created the whole thing.

So how do you know if OP is right with her assessment if you yourself haven’t seen it? In OP’s opinion she wasn’t mentioned enough while others have said she was mentioned quite a bit. How can you agree if you choose not to watch it?

aSofaNearYou · 08/01/2022 15:03

@BurntO

She was mentioned a lot but she isn’t exactly popular. I don’t think half the cast would have appeared in it had she she been involved. Sorry!
I don't think that's true tbh, I think most of the adult cast are on her side of the debate and of the youngsters, they may disagree with her but I don't get the impression their strength of conviction is acrually strong enough that they now dislike her. They're just too cowardly to admit that.
SkyBlueBlues · 08/01/2022 15:03

@JanuaryBluehoo

Agree op. It's her entire created world which has employed and made money for Thousands upon thousands of people and... Provided working for many elderly actors who struggle to find roles. On top of all the merchandise, theme park stuff people who are design and make the rides, the workers the tat shops... Thousands have made money soley due to this world she created.
Very true. And yes I agree with the poster who said JK insisted all the actors were British/British born. She had much involvement with the films, and why would she NOT seeing as how she created it all? It's daft to say any different. And it's disgraceful that she was virtually blanked in this show.

As you say @JanuaryBluehoo JK has created jobs for literally 1000s of people. And fantastic jobs too. And, as you say, she gave older actors, (some whose careers had stalled a bit,) a new lease of life in their career.

She created a world that 100s of millions of people love ALL around the world, and a legacy that will last for generations. She deserves praise, and love, and respect. Not the nasty shit she has been dealt by the woke, and the young actors whose careers she helped get off the ground.

@ninnynonny

Emma 'What shall I call myself today - loooooook at me' Wokeson should really perhaps give all her earnings back if she has decided she hates the person who literally gave her the fame she has now, so much.

This 100%. And that goes for the other over-privileged, and woke young HP actors who have berated and bashed her too.

Cracking opening post.

I meant from the people in the show/being interviewed. Only the NARRATOR mentioned her. That's what I said.

But you knew that didn't you......... Wink

Cracking contribution to the thread!!!!! Hmm

She outed herself as a bigot. You can understand why many of the cast don't want anything to do with her.

(Conflating sex offenders with trans women is transphobic, whatever you 'don't think frankly'.)

Give over Hmm
IDidntFloatUpTheLaganInABubble · 08/01/2022 15:09

It was a disgrace, these people (the cast) seem to forget nearly everything they have they owe to her.

She seems to be constantly misquoted and it's lazy misinformed nonsense.

I heard they were doing this, so cancelled it and have cancelled them. Ungrateful brats 😠

PlanktonsComputerWife · 08/01/2022 15:14

Perhaps she wasn't interested.

She must be really bloody fed up of the speccy little shit at this point.

Hemingwayscatz · 08/01/2022 15:18

I also found it sad how the vast majority of the cast who would be absolutely nothing without Rowling turned against her. She hasn’t done anything wrong at all, many people agree with her logic and having an opinion has never been a crime anyway. We’re in danger of becoming a fascist society if shit like this continues.

Lockheart · 08/01/2022 15:21

Firstly, she was mentioned quite a bit and there were clips of interviews with her, so your premise that the special "totally blanked" her is entirely incorrect.

Secondly, it is as others have pointed out a special about the films and not the books. The films were not something she was heavily involved in.

I support JKR but let's not misrepresent what happened to suit our agenda. We have enough to deal with without making things up to be angry at.

Really?

What did she say?

Actually say.

Her words. In context. In sentences.

Not a summary of what someone on twitter read what someone else on twitter heard that she said.

ReiltinDubh · 08/01/2022 15:22

@Beamur

I would imagine she is smart enough to have made her own choices about appearing on this. As far as I know there's been a resounding silence on whether she was left out or declined. Which rather makes me think she declined and is refusing to engage with all the nonsensical debate around this.
Just thinking about this, and it's obviously the right thing to do for her. She strikes (see what I did there Grin) me as the sort of person that makes considerate, well thought-out choices. It's still just so sad imo that she has had to make that choice, instead of being able to celebrate her wonderful creation.

Can you show me where she did this because I have really searched and can't find any such conflation.....
WabbitsAndWeasels · 08/01/2022 15:25

I'm not going to comment on the frequency with which she was mentioned in the special (I haven't watched it) but with regards to the 'disloyal' behaviour of the actors there has to be a point in time where these adults should be allowed to say what they want. She is the author of a children's book series, they acted in the adaptation, the adaptation couldn't be made without the books but it doesn't been they have to absolutely agree with everything she says forever more. If it had come out she supported fox hunting or something similar and they said they didn't would people be so outraged?

They also don't owe her their careers, some have only acted in small parts (or nothing) since Harry Potter, others are regularly working as actors. Some got their big break in Harry Potter and are recognisable because of it, Daniel Radcliffe had already done several not insignificant acting roles before being cast as I sure some other young actors had. Do you owe your first serious employer everything you have worked hard for since? Do you support everything that boss does and says? Or are you allowed to acknowledge your own hard work and have your own opinions?

CurzonDax · 08/01/2022 15:27

I'm a massive HP fan (book, movies, studio tour - love them all), and will admit that I was one of those people who was initially shocked and horrified with what JK 'said'. Then, I decided to actually read what she said and found that I actually agreed with her. I'm glad I did decide to read/research what she said, rather than just judge her for a few out-of-context comments.

As for the reunion show, I watched it on New Years Day, and was really excited about it (as I said, massive HP fan). I ended up being incredibly disappointed with it - it was dull, and was basically 2 hours of the actors just gushing over each other.

girafferafferaffe · 08/01/2022 15:30

I haven't even watched it because I knew they didn't have her in it. Such a shame.

StellaGibson118 · 08/01/2022 15:34

JK, is that you? Grin

greenmarlin · 08/01/2022 15:38

I wonder if one day they'll look back and be a little embarrassed about betraying someone who gave them such a wonderful opportunity. And for saying absolutely nothing about the threats she has received. I don't know a lot about any of them, but talk about ungrateful.

I feel like the tide is turning now, though, and certainly with my children I'll be working on encouraging critical thinking, respect for single-sex spaces and an awareness of women hatred in its latest incarnation so this prim, self righteous generation will get a bit of pushback from those that come after them - and I'm sure I won't be alone in that.

Also I hope she is working on a new book and not too bothered by all those lucky enough to benefit from her success & talent.
