Aibu to not like drag Queens?

And why don’t I? To me there is something intimidating and scary in the make up, and harsh glamour, parodied until it’s ugly and I think, aggressive. I remember going to drag shows long again in the 90s and they seemed to be a bit of fun and almost innocent compared to whatever it is about ru Paul et al. Nothing wrong with a bit of dame Edna from what I remember as a kid. What’s the reasoning behind this new style I wonder, and aibu?

YANBU, they are a grotesque mockery of womanhood.

Notimeforaname · 01/01/2022 12:08

I love drag. Several of my friends are drag artists.
But I feel the way you described , about clowns! 😆 so each to their own.

TickleMyFanny · 01/01/2022 12:09

All apart from Lily Savage Grin

slashlover · 01/01/2022 12:09

You're going to get loads of people on here agreeing with you and calling it womanface. MN hates them.

Well, they're not wrong, are they?
MaryAndHerNet · 01/01/2022 12:11

There was a time Al Jolson was popular for doing black face.
Drag is woman face and one day I hope it'll be as offensive as black face is now.

SuspiciousHumanoid · 01/01/2022 12:11

YANBU

Dressing up in extremely sexualised costumes and mimicking exaggerated misogynistic stereotypes is offensive. Blackface is offensive, and so is womanface.

AnyFucker · 01/01/2022 12:12

It’s sexual fetish made public. Aggressive, distasteful, demeaning to actual women.

SoupDragon · 01/01/2022 12:12

Personally, I think things like Mrs Brown's Boys are worse.

I neither like nor dislike drag. I think it's so "Pantomime" and OTT that it is distanced from actual womanhood.

Motherdare · 01/01/2022 12:13

They are disgusting and offensive. How this is allowed but black-face isn’t I do not know. Oh yes, I do. Misogyny isn’t a hate crime when everything else is. Women are easy targets and we are supposed to laugh along with this mockery or be accused of being uptight and humourless.

ElectraBlue · 01/01/2022 12:15

If you don't like drag shows nothing is forcing you to watch them...

I find drag wonderful. Live and let live.

Clymene · 01/01/2022 12:16

I hate them and I hate the way the bbc is pushing them constantly.

flumposie · 01/01/2022 12:17

Depends who you've seen. Some I find exaggerated stereotypes of women, others I admire their creativity and artistry.

SpindleSpangle · 01/01/2022 12:17

I had a very interesting conversation with a young person (20s) recently that a lot of drag queens these days are actually parodies of transwomen, not of women - that it's actually 'transwomanface' they're putting on.

I'm still working that one through in my head.

LittleMG · 01/01/2022 12:18

I thought it was just me, I don’t like them. Misogynistic piss take of women.

Mischance · 01/01/2022 12:18

It is grim - I am at a loss to understand why it is so popular.

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/01/2022 12:19

Of course you are NBU to dislike something. I don't like jazz music. Different people like different things.🤷‍♀️

HeyupitsChristmas · 01/01/2022 12:19

Absolutely this.

I dislike it intensely and find it quite creepy and it makes me cringe. I have the same reaction towards pantomime dames and clowns.

LondonQueen · 01/01/2022 12:19

I don't particularly like them but if it makes them happy then i don't see the issue.

doorornottodoor · 01/01/2022 12:20

I hate them and some of their names are so offensive to women. Sad

BingoLingFucker · 01/01/2022 12:20

YANBU drag is awful, as is Mrs Brown’s Boys, as are pantomime dames (couldn’t have a woman playing a funny part!).

Drag in particular though as it’s so sexualised, refers to women as fish and is all round derogatory and shitty.

suzyscat · 01/01/2022 12:20

There's so many different things going on under the drag umbrella these days.
Some of it I do find a grotesque caricature, but some of it I love. There was a brilliant dame at the panto the other day, I think it's great to see young men embracing heels and eyeshadow on Insta. I don't like it when birth, Women's medical conditions etc are ridiculed.

OldaRailer · 01/01/2022 12:20

I agree op.
Why participate in essentially demeaning women. I don't get at all why I should go along with it.

Lovemusic33 · 01/01/2022 12:21

They scare me a little too 😬 the make up, wigs and big dresses.

Tbh…..panto scares me a little too.

NoNameHere12 · 01/01/2022 12:22

I don’t mind it but don’t love it, I think it’s because as a kid the drag women with the overdone makeup was always the villain in the pantomimes
