Aibu to not like drag Queens?

And why don’t I? To me there is something intimidating and scary in the make up, and harsh glamour, parodied until it’s ugly and I think, aggressive. I remember going to drag shows long again in the 90s and they seemed to be a bit of fun and almost innocent compared to whatever it is about ru Paul et al. Nothing wrong with a bit of dame Edna from what I remember as a kid. What’s the reasoning behind this new style I wonder, and aibu?

Excellent, funny drag artists like Dame Edna and Verka Serduchka are unfortunately rare.

Ru Paul et al are as funny as cancer. To me it's not the fact that they are in drag, it's just that it's simpering, predictable American shite!

I have no problem with drag per se, though. Panto dames are an art form in their own right. And can you imagine the ballet La fille mal gardée without the Widow Simone's clog dance? Also, Anthony Dowell was hands down the best evil fairy Carabosse in the ballet Sleeping Beauty.

We'd lose another chunk of culture if we banned "womanface."

Abhannmor · 01/01/2022 12:43

Always seemed a bit dated even when I was a kid? Panto dames are different . Almost a parody of a parody, they are not trying to really impersonate women. If you are genuinely funny like Edna , well OK , bit otherwise it's like ' look I'm wearing a dress!' Yawn

Notimeforaname · 01/01/2022 12:44

You'd need to ask men

All the men? My partner comes to drag shows..hes a man . My partner had been made up in drag by my best friend. Hilarious. He put on a pvc suit and everything 🤣

Notimeforaname · 01/01/2022 12:45

So drag queen - bad. Drag king - indifferent.

Im on the fence. I dont mind the new drag but I'm an out and out fan of Lily Savage and Dame Edna days. Good British drag. Where it was ok to still look like a man and not this overly 'fishy' looks like a woman thing.
However it's never really offended me.

WarmForDecember · 01/01/2022 12:48

I thought I was the only one who has no desire to watch RuPaul! Pile of shite designed to celebrate men stereotyping overly sexualised aspects of womanhood, all fed to us as family entertainment. Fuck that.

As for drag queen story time, the fact that someone dreamed this up, it was approved, and now takes place boggles my mind.

Chasingaftermidnight · 01/01/2022 12:49

I watched Ru Paul’s Drag Race recently and was shocked by how openly misogynistic it was.

Notimeforaname · 01/01/2022 12:49

Why is it funny? What’s funny about some other women finding it uncomfortable or demeaning or downright offensive to see men dressed up as grotesque, usually highly sexualised caricatures of women?( Usually accompanied by a catty, hostile sense of ‘humour’)

Only women can be so openly caricatured and mocked in such a blatant way. And the ‘cool girlfriends’ laugh along. Good for you

I said I think the term 'womanface' is funny. Thats what I'm laughing at. Grin

As I said above..fine if you hate drag. Absolutely fine!! I find clowns grotesque!! I am completely fine with you hating drag that doesn't bother me

I just really really like it. And my best friend of 20+ years who works as a drag artist,is the kindest most hardworking soul I know.

I bet there are some clowns out there who are lovely but when I see them I think 'disgusting ' so I completely understand.

DeepaBeesKit · 01/01/2022 12:50

I don't like it but then I generally hate all heavy makeup including the insta trend stuff with masses of contouring and tattooed on eyebrows and fake eyelashes and what have you, I think it looks fucking terrible so.

CorrBlimeyGG · 01/01/2022 12:50

Bollocks is it demeaning to women.

Imagine getting your knickers in a twist over this!

Sonex · 01/01/2022 12:51

I agree with you. It's womanface and I find it offensive, and a little creepy.

OMG12 · 01/01/2022 12:51

That’s because it’s wrong. It’s as wrong as blackface, but let’s face it women have no voice in the face of mens desire to mock and parody them and take their space. Yet it’s allowed as a tv show. Wonder if they would be as keen to run reruns of the black and white mistral show?

amnm · 01/01/2022 12:52

Drag queens aren't men dressing up as women. It's (mostly) men dressing deliberately in a way that goes against the gender norms imposed on men as a way of rebelling against society.

The queens on stage aren't pretending they're women.

TheFive · 01/01/2022 12:53

@CorrBlimeyGG

When women say they don’t like something we are ‘getting our knickers in a twist’?

Right.

waterlego · 01/01/2022 12:53

Re drag kings. A member of an oppressed group dressing up as and parodying a member of the oppressor group has quite a different feel to when it is the other way round.

Aside from that, I have no idea if men find drag kings offensive. You’d have to ask men. They are of course entitled to be offended and to speak up about it. It’s not for me (a woman) to say whether parodying male stereotypes offends men.

WarmForDecember · 01/01/2022 12:54

It's really not the same as clowns though. Clowns are not caricatures of an oppressed section of society, they're just a comedic character. With a clown it doesn't really matter if they are male, female, black, white or whatever, as they're not taking the piss out of any particular segment of society.

I'm sure your friend is a lovely person but that doesn't make drag OK.

Siuan · 01/01/2022 12:55

I thought it was just me!
I'm really not offended but I just find it toe curling. Like a modern Benny Hill.

MeredithGreyishblue · 01/01/2022 12:56

I don't feel mocked nor offended by most of the queen's on RPDR. I did by Australia's. That felt unpleasant and a bit misogynistic. But I don't feel it from UK or Canada's. I like their stories and I like the creativity of it. I feel there's heart there.

I didn't like old drag particularly. Live in seedy Blackpool bars. They didn't feel like a celebration, somehow.

I think, as with anything, there's stuff you like and some you don't.

But I won't have anyone telling me how, as a woman, I should feel about anything.

BrusselPout · 01/01/2022 12:56

I can't stand them either, they freak me out in the same way clowns freak me out - I think it's the fake faces created out of makeup. And that's before you get to the principle of it being seen as fine to dress up as a caricature of women and basically take the piss

Mumoblue · 01/01/2022 12:56

I don’t mind it much, but I don’t really “get it”. My best friend loves Drag Race and I watch it with her sometimes and I enjoy it okay, but I don’t find it that entertaining. It’s not something I’d be into on my own.

Missey85 · 01/01/2022 12:57

I love drag show's! Their just a bit of fun and all of you posting about "woman face" is just stupid so I suppose you've never worn pants or male style clothing? Get the stick out of ya butts and just enjoy it for what it is

Notimeforaname · 01/01/2022 12:58

I'm sure your friend is a lovely person but that doesn't make drag OK

It's not ok for you. Yes I totally respect that. It's here though and not going anywhere for the moment.

In fact it's only getting more popular.

I could never liken it to blackface at all, it doesn't compute with me.

But I understand some dont like it. That's life !

Franca123 · 01/01/2022 12:59

I hate it. Some of the ones I've seen on TV recently have been grotesque. What I find weird is that everyone on TV loves it. But no one in real life has ever said they like drag at all.

Wizzbangfizz · 01/01/2022 12:59

I don't like them either - find if a gross caricature of women. I did like lily savage thought Grin
